The three words hung in the air, as if not merely written on the book page, but permeating the room itself.
Kael stared at that page, his eyes narrowing. There was a chill penetrating his skin—not from the outside air, but from the meaning behind those words.
Lyra leaned forward, still maintaining a safe distance from the book. Her voice trembled slightly, though she tried to sound calm.
"'The others awaken'... that is not a light warning."
Kael raised an eyebrow.
"What do you mean?"
Lyra exhaled a long breath.
"Every time someone opens this artifact, the Veil does not merely see its owner... it also awakens 'observers' that have been sleeping all this time."
Kael looked at the cracked window from earlier. The creature behind the glass was still waiting, silent but full of tension.
"Other observers?"
Lyra nodded.
"Not just the one you see here. Others in this world... they also awaken. They observe, they judge... and sometimes they act."
Kael looked down, staring at the symbol on his wrist. The cracked light flickered faintly.
"Can we fight them?"
Lyra shook her head slowly.
"If we're talking about physical strength... no. Even this artifact is not strong enough for that. All you can do is survive and learn to read them."
She looked at Kael longer.
"And learning to read them means you must understand what they want... or who they will see next."
Kael slowly closed the book. Every time that page closed, the air felt heavier. Something seemed to inhale their consciousness.
Lyra approached the window. The creature outside remained there, silent. But the lines of black fog seemed increasingly dense, increasingly alive.
"This one is just the beginning. If he is the first observer, the others... they are not patient."
Suddenly, the symbol on Kael's wrist flickered brighter. That light penetrated his skin, making his blood feel like it was boiling. He gripped his wrist.
The book page opened by itself again. A pen that wasn't in his hand wrote new words. Kael and Lyra stared at it in silence.
"Reader... do not be careless."
Several seconds passed. Then an additional sentence appeared:
"They are heading toward you."
Lyra took a deep breath.
"If that's so... we have to move. Now."
Kael nodded. The symbol on his hand glowed bright, indicating that the Veil was truly paying attention to him—and not merely observing. He had already called their attention.
Outside the window, the fog moved faster. Shadowy shapes began to stretch, like creatures ready to penetrate the glass barrier, ready to enter the real world.
Lyra looked at Kael.
"This is no longer a game. Now... this is about survival."
Kael looked at the book on the desk and the symbol on his hand. Once again, he realized that tonight, the world he knew had always been different from what he imagined.
And the other observers... had just begun to awaken.
