Chapter 28 - After the Boundary

Silence followed them back.

Not the peaceful kind.

The heavy kind—

The kind that stayed even after everything was over.

The Gate closed behind them.

No explosion.

No collapse.

Just—

Gone.

"…It disappeared."

One of the S-Rank Hunters spoke quietly.

"…Like it was never there."

No one responded.

Because everyone knew—

That wasn't true.

They remembered.

They felt it.

And that made it worse.

Back at the facility—

No one celebrated.

No one spoke loudly.

The atmosphere had changed.

Because this time—

They didn't win.

They survived.

Kael walked through the halls alone.

No guards.

No restraints.

That, too, had changed.

"…So this is how it feels."

Freedom.

Or something close to it.

But even then—

He could feel it.

That faint presence.

Watching.

"…You're still there."

No answer.

But he knew.

It hadn't left.

It was waiting.

Inside the main conference room—

Tension filled the air.

Han Seojun stood at the center.

"…Report."

Yoo Sera didn't hesitate.

"…Unclassified phenomenon."

A pause.

"…Hostile, but not directly aggressive."

"…Casualties?"

"…Minimal."

That alone—

Was a miracle.

But no one felt relieved.

"…Conclusion?"

Yoo Sera's voice lowered slightly.

"…It's not a Gate."

Silence.

"…Then what is it?"

She hesitated.

For the first time.

"…A system outside the System."

The words settled heavily.

"…Impossible."

"…We saw it."

No one argued after that.

Because they all did.

Han Seojun turned slightly.

Looking at the last person in the room.

Kael.

"…Your thoughts."

Kael leaned against the wall.

Arms crossed.

"…It's simple."

Everyone waited.

"…We're not at the top anymore."

Silence.

No one liked that answer.

But no one could deny it.

"…And that thing…"

Kael's eyes darkened slightly.

"…It's not the only one."

That—

Was worse.

Later—

Kael sat alone again.

Same room.

Same quiet.

But his mind—

Wasn't the same.

"…Boundary…"

He repeated the word slowly.

"…If that was just a wall…"

Then what was behind it?

Or beyond it?

The shadows around him stirred.

Not violently.

Curiously.

As if they—

Remembered something.

"…You know too, don't you…"

He looked at them.

"…You've seen it before."

No response.

But they moved.

Closer.

More aligned.

More—

Connected.

"…Then show me."

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then—

A flicker.

A vision.

Not clear.

Not complete.

But enough.

Darkness.

Endless.

And within it—

Something vast.

Something that made the "boundary" feel small.

Something—

Watching.

Kael's eyes widened slightly.

"…So that's the real problem."

The vision vanished instantly.

The shadows calmed again.

But the feeling—

Remained.

"…This world…"

He leaned back slowly.

"…is just a layer."

A pause.

"…And I'm already breaking through it."

Elsewhere—

Far beyond what the System could reach—

Something stirred.

Not because it was threatened.

But because—

It was interested.

A presence—

Far greater than the "boundary"—

Shifted slightly.

"…An irregular…"

The voice wasn't loud.

But it didn't need to be.

"…How unusual."

Something like amusement—

Or curiosity—

Echoed faintly.

"…Let's see how far you go."

Back in the facility—

Kael closed his eyes.

A faint smile appeared.

"…Yeah…"

Because now—

He understood something important.

He wasn't climbing to the top.

He was breaking out of the entire structure.

And whatever was waiting beyond—

Would have to deal with him eventually.
