Chapter 25 - Chapter 24: war on water

The collision between Ulquiorra's blade and the Kraken's limb sent a tremor through the atmosphere that felt like an earthquake. Even with the ships of the fleet now several miles away, the sonar technicians onboard reported a spike in acoustic pressure that nearly blew out their equipment.

Ulquiorra hovered in the center of the storm, his expression as unchanging as a funeral mask. To his left, the massive body of the Kraken lurched, its hide shimmering with a dark, oily sheen. He had noted earlier that the beast's movements were becoming increasingly erratic, thrashing with a desperate, primal rhythm that suggested it was either panicking or evolving under the stress of the assault.

But the skin was the real issue. Every time his blade or a Bala hit the surface of the monster, it felt like striking a mountain of rubberized steel. It was dense, layered with compressed mana that absorbed kinetic energy.

Suddenly, the Kraken shifted its focus. Sensing the Fourth Fleet slipping past the perimeter he and Grimmjow had carved a few minutes earlier, the beast let out a gargantuan, bubbling shriek. A massive tentacle, thick enough to crush a destroyer in a single coil, whipped toward the nearest transport vessel.

"Futile," Ulquiorra whispered.

He didn't use Sonido this time. He simply extended his arm, his fingers pointing toward the descending limb. A pinprick of emerald light blossomed at his fingertip, expanding into a searing, concentrated orb.

CERO.

The beam of green light hit the tentacle with so much force that it bored through it. The sheer thermal output vaporized the moisture in the Kraken's flesh, causing the limb to explode in a shower of charred meat and boiling seawater. The remnant of the blast continued past the target, slamming into the ocean's surface with the force of a falling moon.

BOOM!

A massive wall of water erupted, rising hundreds of feet into the air. The resulting tidal wave caught the hulls of the passing ships, pitching them forward and pushing them safely out of the Kraken's immediate reach, effectively clearing the path for the raid.

Without giving the screeching underwater titan a single second to recover, Ulquiorra closed the distance. As four more massive tentacles converged from different angles to crush the pale intruder, he vanished into a series of static-filled afterimages.

SH-TK. SH-TK. SH-TK.

He danced through the "Dead Zone" between the limbs, his movements so precise they bordered on precognition.

CLANG.

His zanpakuto moved just enough to deflect the first limb, the sparks from the friction illuminating his cold, green eyes as he prepared to dismantle the beast from the inside out.

The collision sent a shockwave screaming across the water's surface, carving a mile-long trench in the waves that exposed the jagged seabed for a fraction of a second. Without a change in expression, Ulquiorra spun in mid-air, his white jacket fluttering like the wings of a moth. He sliced upward, a trail of teal energy following his blade. The edge raced forward, parting the air and the spray; surprisingly, it bypassed the Kraken's hardened hide as if it were silk, severing a fifty-meter section of the tentacle in a single, clean stroke.

The beast let out a sub-aquatic roar so deep and guttural it vibrated the hulls of the ships that had just made it to the island's docks, rattling the teeth of every hunter onboard.

"You are loud," Ulquiorra whispered, his voice carrying through the chaos. He pointed two fingers at the rising, mountainous mass of the Kraken's main body again. A green spark emitted from his fingertip as a second Cero began to bloom, the air around it beginning to warp from the heat.

Below him, Grimmjow was in his element. He was surrounded by thousands of the aquatic-ant hybrids, their clicking mandibles and wet shrieks filling the air. They leaped from the churning water, their webbed claws reaching for his throat in a desperate, suicidal surge.

Grimmjow scoffed with pure contempt, and spun into a whirlwind of blue sparks. "Is that all?!" he roared. He caught one ant-mermaid by the face, his claws digging into its skull, and slammed it into another with such force they both liquified into a spray of blue gore against one another.

Suddenly, the swarm shifted. The aquatic ants retracted their claws and opened their wide, unhinged maws. In a coordinated movement, hundreds of them launched a barrage of high-pressure water needles, thin, supersonic jets capable of piercing reinforced steel.

Grimmjow's eyes widened slightly as he began to use Sonido, flickering across the water's surface to dodge the crystalline needles that hissed past his ears. But the swarm was relentless. For every hundred he killed, a thousand more surfaced. They began to overlap their fire, creating a dense grid of water-based projectiles that slowly began to overwhelm his pathing.

"Tch! Annoying pests!" Grimmjow growled. He pointed his palm forward and fired a rapid-fire Cero, the crimson blast vaporizing the incoming wave of water and turning the front line of ants into steam.

'Are they multiplying?' he thought, his chest heaving as he was granted a split second of rest. But he didn't get a second. Another swarm, larger than the last, rose from the deep like a living blanket of chitin. They didn't just attack; they threw their entire weight onto him.

THOOOM.

The sheer mass of the creatures crashed into him, dragging him down into the dark, freezing embrace of the sea. Underwater, the ants tore at his jacket, their teeth scraping uselessly against his iron skin. Grimmjow's eyes snapped open, a fierce blue light erupting from his pupils. He pressed his hand against the center of the swarm and let out a muffled roar as a Cero tore through the center of the mass, blowing the creatures apart in a sphere of white-hot energy.

He exploded back out of the water, jumping away. His white jacket was tattered with several fresh scratches, and his hair was plastered to his face, dripping with brine. He landed on the surface of the water, standing on it as if it were solid ground through the masterful use of Reishi.

Grimmjow crouched low with a grub on his face, his blue hair wild and eyes glowing with a manic intensity. He swept his leg in a wide arc, a massive crescent of blue energy tearing through the front line of the closing swarm like a scythe through wheat.

Seeing the sheer, impossible number of the creatures still rising from the depths, Grimmjow's grin turned truly diabolical one. He reached for the blade of his zanpakuto and ran his thumb along the edge, drawing a thin line of blood that began to smoke with blue spiritual pressure. He reached back, his hand glowing with a deep, crimson light that suddenly swirled and bled into a brilliant, electric blue.

The atmosphere around him began to fracture, the space itself groaning under the weight of the coming attack.

"Gran Rey Cero!"

The atmosphere fractured. The world itself seemed to groan as Grimmjow's blue Gran Rey Cero screeched forward, its sheer mass displacing the ocean in a crystalline wake. Simultaneously, from his higher vantage point, Ulquiorra unleashed his own emerald beam, a Cero so dense and concentrated it felt like a vertical line of judgment.

The two beams ran parallel, two distinct rivers of destruction that turned the sky into a deep, bruised purple. The light was so blinding that the sun itself seemed to dim in comparison. As the energy swept across the surface of the ocean, thousands of aquatic ants were erased. A wall of superheated steam, hundreds of feet high, roared into the sky, creating a literal fog of war that obscured the horizon.

———-

Onboard one of the transport jets, a cameraman was frantically battling his equipment. The lens flared with every pulse of light, the sensors whining as they struggled to process the sheer output of energy.

"Are you seeing this?!" the reporter screamed into his microphone, clutching his headset as the jet rattled from the sonic booms. "The Japanese team... they're actually winning! No, they're dominating the dwellers! They've completely halted the advance!"

On the other side of the cabin, a high-ranking Association official stared out the window, his face illuminated by the flickering green and blue flashes. "They're erasing the swarm!" he shouted over the engine roar. "The aquatic hybrids that decimated our scouting fleets are being cleared out like common pests!"

In the Korean Association headquarters, the silence was thick, broken only by the hum of the monitors. Chairman Go Gun-hee leaned forward, a rare, triumphant grin stretching across his weathered face. He watched as the red dots representing the aquatic ants vanished by the hundreds with every swing of the two brothers' power.

"Incredible," the Chairman whispered as he looked at the video. "What took us months of planning and cost us dozens of lives is being handled by two men in a matter of minutes."

Woo Jinchul, standing just behind him, adjusted his sunglasses, though even they couldn't fully mask the shock in his eyes. "Their efficiency is... illogical, Chairman. it's as if they're fundamentally superior to the environment they're fighting in. At this rate, the path to the island will be completely sanitized before the ships even dock completely."

The Chairman began to nod in agreement, but his expression suddenly faltered. He squinted at the main monitor, where the sonar feed and thermal imaging began to glitch, showing a massive, localized distortion rising from the very center of the Jeju Strait.

The grin vanished, replaced by a look of profound confusion and mounting dread. "Wait..." the Chairman muttered, his voice dropping an octave.

"Chairman?" Jinchul stepped forward.

"The Dweller... the Kraken..." Go Gun-hee's hand tightened on his chair until the knuckles were white. "It's not retreating. Look at the displacement. It's not just rising anymore... it's coming out."

The atmosphere above the strait curdled as the Kraken, driven to the brink of extinction by the relentless barrage, finally shed its primal restraint. Another Cero had just vaporized its leftmost primary tentacle, leaving a cauterized stump that hissed against the cold brine.

The water ripple and detonated. The main head of the beast rose from the depths, a mountain of slick, obsidian flesh bristling with hundreds of lidless, golden eyes and concentric circles of gnashing maws. It was a titan of the old world, towering so high it cast a shadow that eclipsed the entire First Fleet trailing behind.

Ulquiorra looked at it, his expression as static and cold as a tombstone. "To think a beast of this caliber possesses such spite," he noted, his voice a calm ripple in the storm.

Suddenly, his pupils contracted. Without a single mana spike or warning, the creature's central maw unhinged, and it bellowed, a sound that wasn't a noise, but a physical shockwave. A condensed wave of dark, murky energy, thick with the stench of the abyss, erupted from its throat and sped toward him like a black sun.

Ulquiorra reacted instantly and brought his zanpakuto forward, the blade shimmering with teal Reiatsu to intercept the tide.

KRA-BOOM!

The dark energy crashed into his blade, the sheer force of the impact pushing his feet back through the air, carving two white lines in the sky. He held his ground, his eyes narrowing as he raised his left hand, pointing a finger directly at the center of the beast's forehead. He began to charge another cero, this one far more dense, drawing in the surrounding spiritual particles until the air began to scream. He intended to end it here, to blow the titan's head into atoms.

But the Kraken was anout to make it so easy for the espada.

From the swirling mist and spray behind him, a hidden fifth tentacle, one that had been burrowing through the seabed erupted from the water like a spear.

Ulquiorra's eyes widened. He was trapped in a lethal pincer between the relentless dark breath and the mountain-sized limb closing in from his blind spot. Forced to choose, he pivoted mid-air, redirecting his arm. He fired a premature Cero at the incoming tentacle, the emerald light clashing with the dark hide in a violent struggle of energies.

But, it wasn't enough.

The two forces of the dark breath and the physical mass of the tentacle converged on his position simultaneously.

THOOOOM!

The sky vanished in a catastrophic explosion of black and green fire. The shockwave was so powerful it flattened the waves for miles, and for a terrifying moment, Ulquiorra's form was completely swallowed by the roiling cloud of destruction.

Taking advantage of the chaos, the Kraken threw its head back and unleashed a final, true roar. The sonic attack so potent it shattered the glass on the distant transport ships and sent a visible distortion rippling through the island, claiming the sky as its own.
