Declan woke me at 5 AM.
"Get dressed. We're going somewhere."
I groaned, pulled the pillow over my head. "It's five in the morning."
"I know. Get dressed."
"Declan"
"Trust me."
I opened one eye. He was already dressed jeans, sweater, an expression I couldn't read. But his eyes were bright. Excited. Like a kid on Christmas morning.
"Fine." I dragged myself out of bed. "But this better be good."
"It's better than good."
---
We drove for hours.
Out of the city. Past the suburbs. Into countryside I'd never seen. Trees. Hills. Open sky. The kids slept in the back, lulled by the motion of the car.
"Where are we going?" I asked for the tenth time.
"You'll see."
"Declan."
"Patience."
"I don't have patience. I have curiosity."
He smiled. "One of the many things I love about you."
---
We pulled off the main road onto a gravel drive.
Trees on both sides. A tunnel of green. Then—open space. A field. Mountains in the distance. And at the end of the drive, a house.
Small. Old. Beautiful.
Wooden porch. Stone chimney. Windows that caught the morning light.
I stared.
"What is this?"
"Something I've been working on." He stopped the car, turned to me. "For months. With your mother's help."
"My mother?"
"She knew. Everyone knew. Except you." He took my hands. "Your mother's house is too small. She needs space. Room to garden, to host, to live. And we need a place away from the city. Somewhere the kids can run. Somewhere we can breathe."
I couldn't speak.
"I bought this property months ago. Had it renovated. Made it ours." He squeezed my hands. "It's hers if she wants it. Your mother's. But it's also ours. A place for weekends. Holidays. Whenever we need to escape."
I stared at him.
"You bought my mother a house?"
"I bought us a place to visit. A place for her to live. A place for our kids to grow up running through fields." He smiled. "You gave me a family, Olivia. I want to give you one too."
I burst into tears.
"Hey" He pulled me close. "Hey, why are you crying?"
"Because you're….because this is…." I couldn't finish. Just held him tighter.
"I'll take that as a good sign."
"It's a good sign." I pulled back, wiped my eyes. "It's the best sign. I love you."
"I love you too. Now let's go see it."
---
The house was perfect.
Hardwood floors. Big kitchen. Windows everywhere. A porch that wrapped around the whole thing, with rocking chairs and a swing.
Lily woke up as we carried her inside. Her eyes went huge.
"Daddy! Where are we?"
"This is our new house, baby. Well …our second house. For weekends."
"We have two houses?"
"Now we do."
She considered this. "Can I have two rooms?"
Declan laughed. "You can have whatever you want."
---
We explored every room.
The master bedroom, with a view of the mountains. The kids' rooms, already painted and furnished. A playroom filled with toys. A library with bookshelves built into the walls.
And in the backyard, a garden.
My mother's garden.
She was there, waiting. Standing among the flowers, smiling.
"Mom?"
"Surprise." She opened her arms. I ran into them.
"You knew? This whole time?"
"Months. He called me. Asked what I wanted. What you'd want." She held me tight. "He loves you, Olivia. Really loves you."
I turned to look at him. Declan stood with Lily on his hip, Marcus in his arms, both kids waving at me.
"This is..." I couldn't find words.
"It's home," he said. "For all of us."
---
We spent the day exploring.
The garden. The fields. A creek at the edge of the property where Lily immediately tried to catch frogs. Marcus napped in Declan's arms, peaceful and content.
My mother wandered through the house, touching walls, opening windows, tears streaming down her face.
"It's too much," she kept saying. "It's too much."
"It's not enough," Declan said. "Nothing would be enough for the woman who raised Olivia."
My mother pulled him into a hug. Held him for a long time.
"You're family now," she said when she finally pulled back. "Real family. Not by marriage. By choice."
Declan's eyes were wet. "Thank you."
---
That night, after my mother went home and the kids were asleep, we sat on the porch.
The stars were brighter here. Away from the city lights, they burned like diamonds scattered across black velvet.
"Happy?" he asked.
"Ridiculously."
"Good." He pulled me close. "Me too."
"Even after everything?"
"Especially after everything." He kissed my forehead. "The hard parts made us who we are. I wouldn't change a single moment."
"Not even the contract?"
"Especially not the contract." He smiled. "It brought me you."
I kissed him. Long and slow.
"I love you, Declan Kane."
"I love you too, Olivia Kane." He pulled me closer. "Forever."
"Forever sounds good."
"It does."
