Chapter 3 - The Road Without a Name

Edward left the village before the fog could pull him back. He didn't stop or look behind him. The ruined houses, the broken streets, and everything that once felt like home slowly disappeared into the mist as he walked forward. After a few minutes, the village was completely gone from sight, swallowed by the same grey fog that seemed to cover the entire world.

The road ahead had no clear shape. It was barely a path, just uneven ground with faint marks showing that people had once walked there. Grass had already begun to grow over it, as if the world itself was trying to erase it. There were no signs, no directions, and no idea where it would lead.

Edward kept walking anyway. "Where am I even going?" he wondered. "Does it even matter? I just have to keep moving."

At first, his steps felt normal, but the longer he walked, the more something felt off. It wasn't fear. It was something quieter, something heavier. He slowly realized what it was.

He was alone.

There were no voices around him. No distant sounds of people working or talking. Even the wind felt quieter out here. The only thing he could hear clearly was his own breathing and the soft sound of his footsteps. "I'm really alone… no one to help me, no one to warn me," he thought. "I have to be careful."

The elder's words came back to him.

Survive first. Understand later.

Edward repeated those words in his mind as he continued forward. "Survive first… okay. I can do that. I just need to stay alive." They weren't comforting, but they made sense. Right now, he didn't need answers. He needed to stay alive.

After some time, the land began to change. The open path narrowed, and the air started to feel heavier. The sunlight grew weaker as tall trees appeared ahead of him. Their shadows stretched across the ground, dark and unwelcoming.

Edward slowed down as he stepped into the forest. "It's different here… feels older… feels like it's waiting."

The difference was immediate.

The trees were massive, rising high above him and blocking most of the light. Only small rays managed to pass through the thick branches, creating faint patches of light on the ground. The fog was thicker here, moving slowly between the trees.

Everything felt quieter.

Too quiet.

Edward took a few more steps, his eyes scanning his surroundings carefully. The ground was uneven, covered with roots and fallen leaves. Every step had to be placed carefully. "Don't trip… don't make a sound… just stay aware."

Then he stopped.

Something felt wrong.

He didn't hear anything at first, but there was a clear sense that he wasn't alone anymore. His body reacted before his mind did, becoming tense as he stood still and listened. "Something's here… I can feel it."

A faint snapping sound came from behind him.

Edward turned quickly.

There was nothing there.

Just trees and fog.

He stayed still for a few seconds, watching carefully. Then another sound came, this time from a different direction. It was soft, almost hidden, but it was there.

Something was moving.

Edward's grip on his wooden sword tightened. His heartbeat started to increase, but he forced himself to stay calm. "Don't panic… running blindly won't help. I have to see it first."

Another sound came from his left.

Then one from his right.

It wasn't random.

Whatever was out there was moving around him. "Circling me… careful… I can handle this."

Slowly, he adjusted his stance slightly, raising the wooden sword in front of him. His eyes moved carefully between the trees, trying to catch even the smallest movement.

For a brief moment, he saw something.

A dark shape, low to the ground, disappearing behind a tree almost instantly.

Edward's breathing slowed as he focused. "It's real… not my imagination… something's watching."

So it wasn't his imagination.

Something was definitely there.

And it was watching him. "I have to be ready. I can't let it catch me off guard."

The forest felt heavier with each passing second. The fog shifted slightly, and for a moment, he thought he saw another shape deeper between the trees.

Then silence again.

Edward tightened his grip on the wooden sword. "No one's coming… this is it. The world isn't safe. It's just me."

This wasn't the village anymore.

Out here, there was no one to protect him.

This was the world.

"And I have to survive it."
