Chapter 4 - The Ruin That Called Me

Edward had thought he had escaped.

The forest behind him had gone quiet again, the snapping branches and circling presence fading into nothing. For a while, he walked without hearing anything unusual, his grip on the wooden sword slowly loosening.

But the feeling never truly left.

The world wasn't done with him.

The trees began to thin after some time, and the dense forest slowly opened into a wide clearing. Edward stepped forward carefully, his eyes scanning the ground before him. What he saw made him pause.

Stone.

Not natural rock, but shaped—cut and placed by human hands.

Broken pillars lay scattered across the clearing, some half-buried in the earth, others cracked and leaning at unnatural angles. The ground itself had changed, patches of worn stone replacing the dirt path he had been following.

Ruins.

Old ones.

Far older than anything he had seen in the village.

Edward stepped closer without realizing it. Something about the place pulled at him. It wasn't fear. It wasn't safety either. It was something else… something quiet but impossible to ignore.

Curiosity.

Or maybe something deeper.

The air here felt different.

He moved between the broken structures slowly, his footsteps echoing faintly against the stone. The fog drifted low across the ground, wrapping around the ruins as if protecting them.

Then he saw the statues.

They stood in rows, scattered across the clearing, half-hidden between fallen pillars and shattered walls. Some were tall and imposing, shaped like warriors holding weapons that had long since eroded into unrecognizable forms. Others were more delicate—figures that might have once been maidens, their features softened by time.

Edward stepped closer to one.

Its face was gone.

Not broken cleanly, but worn down, as if time itself had erased it piece by piece. The same was true for the others. No eyes. No expressions. No identity.

It was as if even history had abandoned them.

A quiet unease settled in his chest.

He looked around again.

The entire place was destroyed. Walls had collapsed into piles of stone, and what looked like an altar lay shattered at the center of the clearing. Cracks ran through everything, deep and uneven, like scars left behind after something violent had passed through.

And yet…

It didn't feel dead.

Edward couldn't explain it, but the ruin felt… awake.

Like something here was still watching.

He took another step forward.

Then stopped.

A sound broke the silence.

Footsteps.

Behind him.

Slow.

Heavy.

Edward didn't turn immediately. His body went still, every muscle tightening as the sound came again. This time, it was clearer.

Closer.

The same feeling from the forest returned instantly, stronger than before.

It hadn't left.

It had followed him.

Edward slowly shifted his stance, his hand tightening around the wooden sword as his breathing became controlled and shallow.

The footsteps stopped.

Right behind him.

For a moment, there was nothing but silence.

Then the air itself seemed to grow heavier.

Edward's eyes narrowed slightly.

This time… it wasn't hiding.

It knew exactly where he was.
