Chapter 37 - Chapter 1: The Calm

Six months after the battle in the cemetery, New Orleans had found an uneasy peace.

Klaus ruled the Quarter, but his reign was different now—less paranoid, more strategic. The Crescent pack had claimed territory in the Bayou, their freedom a constant reminder that old rules could be broken. Marcel was rebuilding in secret, waiting for the right moment to return. And the witches were healing, their connection to the ancestors severed, forced to find new sources of power.

I spent my days at The Crossing, watching it all unfold.

The bar had become something unexpected—a true neutral ground where vampires, wolves, and witches could interact without violence. Josh ran the day-to-day operations, his easy charm smoothing over conflicts before they escalated. I handled the difficult cases.

"Paradox." Sophie slipped onto the stool beside me, looking tired but content. "We found a new anchor. For the coven. Someone who can channel the living magic of New Orleans without the ancestors' interference."

"Who?"

She smiled. "Someone young. Powerful. Uncorrupted by old grudges."

Davina emerged from the back room, wiping paint from her hands. She'd been working on a mural for the bar—a massive piece that showed the city's supernatural history in colors that seemed to shift when you looked too long.

"You're talking about me," she said without accusation. "I told you, Sophie. I'm not interested in leading a coven."

"Not leading. Anchoring. There's a difference."

"I'm not interested in being anchored either." Davina slid behind the bar, pouring herself a drink. "I've been anchored enough."

I watched the exchange with quiet satisfaction. Six months ago, Davina would have been afraid of this conversation—afraid of being pulled back into a world that had already taken everything from her. Now she just looked... annoyed. Normal. The kind of annoyance that came from having choices and exercising them.

"The offer stands," Sophie said. "Whenever you're ready."

She left, and Davina turned to me.

"You told her to ask."

"I told her you deserved the chance to refuse on your own terms."

Davina studied me for a moment, then smiled. "You're getting predictable, Paradox. Thirteen thousand realities, and you've settled into being... protective."

"Predictable isn't the same as boring."

"No. It's not." She reached out and touched my arm—a gesture that had become casual between us, though it still carried weight. "I'm going to the Bayou tomorrow. Hayley invited me to meet the pack. See the baby."

Hope Mikaelson was four months old now, growing faster than any human child. The pack had accepted her as one of their own, protecting her from the politics that swirled around her existence.

"Be careful," I said.

"Always." She grabbed her jacket. "Are you coming?"

"Later. I have a meeting."

She raised an eyebrow but didn't ask. One of the things I appreciated about Davina—she'd learned when to push and when to let things unfold.

After she left, I waited.

Klaus arrived at midnight.

He moved differently now—not the swagger of a conqueror, but the confidence of someone who'd accepted that true power didn't need constant display. The months since the battle had changed him, though he'd never admit it.

"Paradox." He took the seat Davina had vacated. "I've been thinking about our arrangement."

"Which part?"

"The part where you protect everyone who matters while I do the actual ruling." He signaled Josh for a drink. "It's worked surprisingly well."

"It works because you're not as unreasonable as you pretend to be."

Klaus laughed. "Careful. That almost sounds like affection."

"Respect. Different thing entirely."

He accepted his drink, savoring it. "I came to tell you something. There's a new player in the city. Someone who appeared a few days ago, asking questions about the battle. About you."

"Name?"

"Doesn't matter. What matters is what they are." Klaus's eyes flickered gold. "They're not from here. Not from this reality, if my sources are accurate."

[ANOMALY DETECTED]

[Dimensional signature: Unknown]

[Origin: Outside established multiverse]

[Threat level: UNDETERMINED]

[Recommendation: Investigate immediately]

The System had never given me an "undetermined" threat level before.

"You have my attention."

Klaus smiled—the sharp smile that meant he was enjoying himself.

"I thought you might say that."
