Chapter 8 - The Wolf He Should Have Faered

The night refused to end quietly.

Even after the confrontation between the two Alphas, the forest still felt tense—like the air itself was holding its breath.

No one spoke for several long seconds.

The golden-eyed Alpha had already vanished into the shadows, leaving behind only the echo of his overwhelming presence.

But the effect he left on the clearing remained.

Heavy.

Unsettling.

Every warrior of Silver Ridge stood stiffly, their heads lowered as Damon's aura spread across the forest.

Anger.

That was the only word for it.

Pure Alpha anger.

"Elena."

My name sounded sharper this time.

I slowly turned toward him.

Moonlight illuminated Damon's face, and for the first time since I had known him, his expression looked… uncertain.

Not weak.

Never weak.

But something inside him had shifted.

His gray eyes studied me carefully.

My silver hair.

My glowing eyes.

The faint aura my wolf still released.

"You're coming back to the pack," he said finally.

It wasn't a question.

It was an order.

The old Elena might have obeyed.

The girl who had spent years hoping Damon would look at her the way a mate should.

The girl who had endured whispers, pity, and humiliation from the pack.

But that girl was gone.

My wolf lifted her head proudly.

We owe him nothing.

I folded my arms calmly.

"No."

The word cut through the clearing like a blade.

The warriors stiffened instantly.

Even Captain Rowan looked stunned.

Damon's eyes darkened.

"You don't get to refuse me."

"Watch me."

A few warriors inhaled sharply.

Rowan stepped forward.

"Elena, this is the Alpha you're speaking to."

I glanced at him.

"And?"

His mouth opened slightly, but no words came out.

For years I had bowed my head to every order.

Lowered my gaze.

Accepted every insult.

Tonight, that ended.

Damon took a slow step closer.

The power rolling off him pressed heavily against my chest.

It was the full force of an Alpha's dominance.

Any ordinary wolf would have dropped to their knees instantly.

But my wolf stood firm.

Unmoving.

Unimpressed.

My lips curved slightly.

"Are you done?"

The question clearly surprised him.

Damon's aura flared again.

"Elena."

His voice was quieter now.

More dangerous.

"You are still part of Silver Ridge."

I tilted my head.

"Was I?"

Silence.

For years they had treated me like an outsider.

A human girl without a wolf.

A useless mate for their Alpha.

No one defended me when the whispers spread.

No one stopped the insults.

And Damon…

Damon had rejected me in front of everyone.

"You lost the right to call me pack when you rejected me," I said calmly.

The words struck harder than any attack.

Rowan shifted uneasily.

"Elena, that rejection was—"

"Public."

My voice remained steady.

"In front of the entire pack."

My eyes returned to Damon.

"You humiliated me."

For a brief moment, something flickered across his face.

Regret.

But it vanished quickly.

"You didn't have a wolf," Damon said.

The words hung in the air.

My wolf growled softly.

I raised an eyebrow.

"And?"

He gestured toward me.

"You do now."

The implication was clear.

Now I was valuable.

Now I mattered.

Now I belonged.

My laugh echoed across the clearing.

Cold.

Sharp.

"Interesting."

Damon's jaw tightened.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means," I replied, "that your timing is terrible."

A ripple of whispers spread among the warriors.

Rowan stepped closer again.

"Elena, enough. You will return to the pack."

My wolf snarled.

Before I could answer—

The wind shifted.

Every wolf in the clearing stiffened instantly.

A new scent drifted through the air.

Powerful.

Ancient.

And unmistakable.

The golden-eyed Alpha.

He hadn't gone far.

Damon's head snapped toward the forest.

His aura darkened immediately.

"Come out," Damon said coldly.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then a low chuckle echoed between the trees.

"You really should relax, Damon."

Branches parted as the man stepped back into the clearing.

The warriors immediately moved into defensive positions.

Rowan growled.

"You again."

The stranger ignored him completely.

His golden eyes moved straight to me.

"You're still here."

My wolf stirred warmly.

You notice everything about him.

I ignored her.

"You didn't leave either," I replied.

His smile deepened slightly.

"True."

Damon stepped forward, placing himself between us.

"This is your final warning," he said.

"You are trespassing."

The man looked amused.

"I thought we established earlier that I don't care about territory."

Damon's aura exploded outward.

"You should."

The ground trembled faintly.

Several warriors lowered their heads under the pressure.

The stranger sighed.

"You're proving my point."

His golden eyes flicked toward me again.

"You really chose this one as your Alpha?"

Damon's temper snapped instantly.

"Watch your words."

The stranger chuckled softly.

"Why?"

He stepped closer.

Fearless.

Provocative.

"You rejected a Silver Wolf."

The clearing went silent.

Even the wind stopped moving.

Damon's eyes flashed.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

"Oh, I do."

The stranger's voice lowered slightly.

"Better than you think."

My heart pounded.

Silver Wolf.

The words still felt unreal.

Damon looked at me again.

Then back at the stranger.

"Explain."

The man shrugged.

"Ask her."

All eyes turned to me.

My wolf shifted inside me uneasily.

We barely understand it ourselves.

Damon spoke again.

"Elena."

His voice was firm.

"What are you?"

The question echoed through the clearing.

I held his gaze.

For the first time, I saw something new in his eyes.

Not anger.

Not dominance.

Fear.

He was afraid of the answer.

My wolf whispered softly.

Tell them.

I inhaled slowly.

Then I said the words that would change everything.

"I'm not the wolf you rejected."

The silence deepened.

Damon's expression hardened.

"Then what are you?"

My eyes glowed faintly under the moonlight.

The golden-eyed Alpha watched with quiet interest.

The warriors waited.

And the forest itself seemed to lean closer.

"I'm the wolf you should have feared."

The moment the words left my mouth—

My wolf surged forward inside my mind.

Power exploded through my body like lightning.

The ground beneath my feet cracked slightly.

Gasps erupted around the clearing.

Rowan stumbled back.

"What the—"

Silver light burst across my skin.

Not a full shift.

Not yet.

But enough for everyone to see the truth.

My aura filled the forest.

Ancient.

Wild.

Untamed.

The warriors dropped to their knees instantly.

Even Damon staggered half a step backward.

Shock filled his face.

Because the power flooding the clearing now…

Was not just the strength of a wolf.

It was the power of a legend.

And somewhere behind me—

The golden-eyed Alpha smiled.
