Chapter 9 - Before the Fall

The night of the rejection began like every other illusion Elena had ever believed in.

Beautiful.

Hopeful.

A lie.

---

The Silver Ridge pack house glowed under the full moon, lanterns swaying gently in the cool night air. Laughter echoed across the grounds, warriors celebrating, omegas moving quickly between tables, and elders watching with knowing smiles.

Tonight was supposed to be special.

Not for the pack.

For her.

---

Elena stood at the edge of the gathering, fingers clenched tightly around the fabric of her dress.

White.

Simple.

Carefully chosen.

Because tonight—

She wanted to be seen.

---

"You look nervous."

The voice came softly from beside her.

Mira.

One of the few who had ever spoken to her without pity.

---

"I'm not," Elena said quickly.

Too quickly.

---

Mira raised a brow.

"You've been staring at the Alpha for the past ten minutes."

---

Elena's breath caught.

Her eyes instinctively shifted toward the center of the gathering.

And there he was.

Damon.

---

Standing tall.

Commanding.

Untouchable.

---

The future Alpha of Silver Ridge.

Her mate.

---

Her heart tightened.

Not painfully.

Not yet.

But enough to remind her—

Everything could change tonight.

---

"He hasn't rejected you yet," Mira said quietly.

---

The words landed like a warning.

---

Elena forced a small smile.

"He won't."

---

But even as she said it—

Her wolf remained silent.

---

That silence had always scared her.

More than whispers.

More than judgment.

More than loneliness.

---

Because deep down—

She knew.

---

Something was wrong.

---

The music slowed.

The conversations softened.

And like an invisible thread pulling the entire pack together—

All eyes turned toward Damon.

---

He stepped forward.

Confident.

Certain.

Every inch an Alpha.

---

"Elena."

---

Her name.

Spoken in front of everyone.

---

Her heart stopped.

Then raced.

---

This was it.

---

Mira squeezed her arm gently.

"Go."

---

And Elena did.

---

Step by step.

Across the clearing.

Past watching eyes.

Past whispered judgments.

Past years of being unseen.

---

Tonight—

She would finally stand beside him.

---

She stopped in front of Damon.

Close enough to feel his presence.

Close enough to believe—

This was real.

---

His gray eyes met hers.

Unreadable.

---

But she didn't question it.

She couldn't.

Not now.

---

The moon shone brighter above them.

As if even the sky was waiting.

---

Damon inhaled slowly.

Then spoke.

---

"I, Damon Blackwood, Alpha of Silver Ridge…"

---

The formal tone sent a ripple through the crowd.

---

Elena's pulse thundered.

Her chest tightened.

But she held her ground.

---

"…reject you, Elena Vale."

---

The world didn't shatter.

---

It stopped.

---

Completely.

---

No sound.

No movement.

No breath.

---

For a single, endless moment—

Nothing existed.

---

Then—

Everything crashed back at once.

---

Gasps.

Whispers.

Shock.

---

But Elena didn't hear them.

---

Because the only thing she could hear—

Was the echo of those words.

---

Reject you.

---

Reject you.

---

Reject you.

---

Her body didn't move.

Couldn't move.

---

Her mind struggled to catch up.

To understand.

To deny.

---

This wasn't supposed to happen.

---

Not like this.

---

Not here.

---

Not in front of everyone.

---

Her lips parted.

But no words came out.

---

"Why…?"

---

The question barely formed.

Barely real.

---

Damon's expression didn't change.

---

"You have no wolf."

---

Simple.

Cold.

Final.

---

A murmur spread through the crowd.

Some pitiful.

Some cruel.

---

Elena felt it then.

Not the rejection.

Not yet.

---

The humiliation.

---

It wrapped around her like chains.

Dragging her down.

Crushing her lungs.

---

Her vision blurred.

But she refused to cry.

---

Not here.

---

Not in front of them.

---

"You're not fit to stand beside an Alpha," Damon continued.

---

Each word precise.

Each word deliberate.

---

Like he wanted them all to hear it.

---

Like he wanted her to feel it.

---

Laughter broke somewhere in the crowd.

Low.

Mocking.

---

Someone whispered—

"I knew it."

---

Another voice—

"She was never worthy."

---

Elena's hands trembled.

---

Her chest burned.

---

Still—

No wolf.

---

Still—

Nothing.

---

Her head lowered slowly.

Not in submission.

But because she couldn't hold it up anymore.

---

Years.

---

Years of waiting.

Of hoping.

Of believing.

---

All of it—

Gone.

---

Destroyed in a single sentence.

---

"Elena."

---

Damon's voice again.

---

She looked up.

Slowly.

---

Mistake.

---

Because his eyes—

Held no regret.

---

No hesitation.

---

No doubt.

---

Only certainty.

---

That she was nothing.

---

Something inside her cracked.

---

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

---

Quietly.

---

Like something fragile finally giving up.

---

"I understand," she said.

---

The words shocked even her.

---

Because they were calm.

Too calm.

---

A flicker crossed Damon's face.

Surprise.

---

But it disappeared quickly.

---

"Good."

---

That was all he said.

---

Good.

---

As if she had just accepted her place.

---

As if she had just made things easier for him.

---

The last piece inside her broke.

---

But something else—

Something deeper—

Shifted.

---

Her wolf.

---

For the first time—

It moved.

---

Faint.

Weak.

But there.

---

Not comfort.

Not warmth.

---

Anger.

---

Cold.

Quiet.

Deadly.

---

Elena inhaled slowly.

---

Then she lifted her head fully.

---

And for the first time—

She didn't look at Damon with hope.

---

She looked at him with clarity.

---

"You're right," she said softly.

---

The crowd leaned in.

---

Damon watched her carefully.

---

"I'm not fit to stand beside you."

---

Agreement.

Acceptance.

---

That's what they expected.

---

But then—

She smiled.

---

And everything changed.

---

"Because I was never meant to stand behind anyone."

---

Silence dropped.

Heavy.

Sharp.

Unfamiliar.

---

Damon's eyes narrowed slightly.

---

Elena turned.

---

And walked away.

---

Not running.

Not breaking.

---

Walking.

---

Step by step.

Out of the crowd.

Out of the whispers.

Out of the life that had never truly been hers.

---

Behind her—

The pack remained frozen.

---

Because something about that moment—

Felt wrong.

---

Like they had just witnessed something they didn't understand.

---

Something they would regret.

---

And under the full moon—

Elena didn't look back.

---

But deep inside—

Her wolf whispered.

---

This is not the end.

---

A pause.

---

Then—

This is where it begins.
