Chapter 37 - Chapter 40: Someone Inside the Palace Betrays Them

The message from her pack still burned in Selena's hands, its warnings echoing in her mind. The northern scouts had detected unusual movement, rogue vampires aligned with the cult, and signs that the palace itself might not be safe. She paced her chambers, her silver eyes reflecting the silvery glow of the Blood Moon. Her wolf growled low beneath her skin, sensing danger closer than she had anticipated.

Adrian's presence entered silently, as always, his crimson eyes immediately catching the tension in her posture. "They trust you with this information for a reason," he said softly. "But you also need to consider… someone in the palace may not be loyal. Every shadow, every whisper, every servant could be a threat."

Selena's heart tightened. "I know. The palace has always been dangerous, but now… the threat feels personal. Someone here has betrayed us, or plans to."

Adrian stepped closer, placing a firm hand on the table where the message lay. "Then we uncover them before they strike. Trust no one fully, Selena. Even those closest may serve another purpose."

Her wolf growled, the instinct of danger and blood making her pulse quicken. "Then we start tonight. We watch, we wait, and we find the traitor before they hurt anyone."

The first hours of the night passed in tense silence. Selena moved through the palace corridors like a shadow, her steps measured, alert to every whisper and creak. She carried the dagger hidden beneath her cloak, her senses tuned to detect the slightest anomaly.

Adrian followed quietly behind her, a silent guardian whose presence was both reassuring and nerve-wracking. She could feel the subtle tension between them—trust tempered by lingering suspicion, and the attraction neither dared to name aloud.

As they approached the western wing, Selena paused, noticing something off in the guards' routine. A door, usually locked at this hour, was slightly ajar. Her wolf growled in warning, and her hand went to the hilt of her dagger.

"Stay behind me," she whispered. "Something is wrong."

Adrian nodded silently, his crimson eyes scanning the shadows. Together, they moved closer, every step silent, every breath measured.

Inside the room, they found evidence of the betrayal. Documents detailing palace secrets, troop movements, and messages intended for the cult lay scattered across the floor. Selena's jaw tightened as she realized the scope of the treachery. The traitor was not a minor player—they were someone with access, influence, and cunning.

Before she could react further, a figure emerged from the shadows. A familiar face—one of the palace aides she had trusted—held a dagger in hand, eyes cold and calculating.

"You shouldn't have snooped, Luna," the traitor hissed. "Some truths are best left buried."

Selena's wolf bared its teeth beneath her skin, a low growl vibrating through her body. "You betray your own kingdom for what? Power? Greed? Or the cult?"

The aide smirked, stepping forward, dagger glinting in the moonlight. "All of the above. And soon, the palace will burn. The Blood Moon will rise, and none will be left to stop me."

Adrian moved instantly, his hand clashing against the traitor's wrist to deflect the dagger aimed at Selena. The two vampires engaged in a lethal dance, striking and dodging, their movements precise and deadly.

Selena joined the fight, her dagger slicing through the air with accuracy and force. The traitor underestimated her, underestimating both her skill and her wolf's instincts. Together, Selena and Adrian cornered the betrayer, every strike and counterstrike synchronized without words, their trust implicit in the chaos.

Finally, with a swift maneuver, Selena disarmed the traitor, sending the dagger clattering across the floor. Adrian pinned the aide to the wall, crimson eyes blazing with fury and warning.

"This is your last chance," he growled. "Confess, or face the consequences."

The traitor sneered but finally spoke. "I serve those who will control the kingdom… who will ensure the prophecy favors them."

Selena's blood ran cold. "You will betray no one. Not while I breathe."

Adrian released the aide, letting Selena step forward. Her wolf surged, her senses heightened, and she struck decisively. The traitor crumpled, unconscious but alive—enough to interrogate and reveal the wider network of palace conspirators.

After the confrontation, Selena and Adrian stood in the silent room, the Blood Moon casting shadows across their bodies. Their eyes met, unspoken tension threading between them.

"You could have been killed," Adrian said quietly, voice low and serious.

"And you could have been," Selena replied, her voice steady but her pulse racing. "But we faced it… together."

A subtle warmth lingered between them, a tension neither had admitted aloud but both had felt since the beginning of the palace's conspiracies. It was no longer just trust—it was connection, attraction, a bond forged in danger, shadows, and the fight for survival.

Later, in the council chamber, Selena presented the evidence to the king and key allies. The palace murmured in shock as the traitor's identity and motives were revealed. Some nobles were outraged, others relieved, and a few shifted nervously in their seats, aware that the palace was now even more unstable than before.

Adrian remained beside her, silent and protective, his hand brushing hers ever so subtly as they moved through the crowd. The gesture was fleeting, almost imperceptible, but it sent a ripple of awareness through Selena. She realized, with a mixture of fear and acknowledgment, that the attraction she had felt before was growing—fed by danger, trust, and the understanding that survival meant relying on each other more than ever.

As night fell, Selena returned to her chambers, exhausted but resolute. The traitor had been caught, but the betrayal was only the beginning. Her pack, the palace, and the prophecy all demanded vigilance. And above all, she knew that the subtle tension, the attraction, and the unspoken bond with Adrian would continue to grow amidst the coming storms.

The Blood Moon shone high above, silver light spilling across the palace grounds, casting long shadows and illuminating secrets yet to be revealed. Selena's wolf stirred restlessly, sensing the storms approaching—not just of war, but of passion, loyalty, and the dangerous dance between Luna and Crimson Prince.

And Selena knew one thing with absolute certainty: the palace would never feel safe again. But neither would her heart.
