Raven continued descending deeper into Gringotts Bank, the tunnels narrowing as the rails curved downward into darkness. Vault numbers slid past her vision as the magical pressure thickened with every level she passed. The air itself felt heavier, layered with enchantments meant to crush, repel, and erase intruders long before they ever reached the depths.
She passed into the lower one hundreds, then lower still, until a sudden shift in pressure washed over her senses. A powerful magical barrier rippled outwards as she crossed it, and the tunnel opened abruptly into a massive cavern-like chamber.
Sleeping in the center of the chamber was a colossal dragon, its enormous body curled protectively around a vast stretch of stone. Its breathing was slow and deep, each exhale sending warm currents through the cavern. Raven stopped midair and stared down at it.
"They actually have dragons here," she said quietly.
Her gaze traced the creature's armored scales and massive wings as recognition settled in. This world truly does house mythological creatures on a grand scale. She circled the dragon once, keeping her distance.
"But this creature clearly can't sense me," Raven added, noting the lack of reaction as she drifted past its massive head.
She phased cleanly through the space beyond the dragon and continued downwards. Vault numbers ticked backwards—ten through one—as the enchantments grew sharper, more aggressive, layered with ancient magic.
Raven slowed and stopped before an enormous vault door carved into the stone. She scanned the area, her eyes narrowing. The vault in front of her read Vault One on the door.
"No… this isn't what I'm looking for."
To the right of the vault door, she noticed a narrow crevice barely wide enough for a person to slip through. Magic tugged at her awareness, subtle but insistent.
"My intuition is telling me to go there," she thought.
She slipped through the crevice, phasing partway through the stone as the passage tightened around her. The moment she crossed fully into the hidden corridor, wards came alive with awareness.
Raven froze mid-air.
"How can my magic trigger wards here when even Vault One didn't?"
The space around her rippled violently, reality folding inward as layers of concealment peeled away. The corridor unfolded into a massive obsidian chamber hidden beyond normal perception.
Before her stood a gigantic vault, its surface swallowing the light.
Above the entrance, glowing runes flared to life:
VAULT ZERO — GRINGOTTS BANK
Raven drifted forward slowly, taking in the scale of the chamber. Towering obsidian pillars stretched upwards, disappearing into darkness far above. Six enormous obsidian sconces lined the approach to the vault door.
One by one, the sconces ignited with black flames, bathing the chamber in eerie, shifting black light.
Raven watched the fire carefully. "This magic… it feels familiar somehow."
She approached the ancient vault doors, her steps measured. Shadow-like magical seals crawled across its surface, pulsing faintly as her presence drew closer. The resonance between the seals and her own power intensified until it vibrated through her bones.
Raven raised her hand and touched the door.
The shadow seals shattered instantly, fracturing like glass with a thunderous crack that echoed through the chamber. Shards of dark magic scattered and dissolved into nothing.
As the seals fell away, the true vault door was revealed.
Etched deeply into the obsidian black vault door were the words:
VAULT ZERO — PROPERTY OF THE CROSS FAMILY
Raven stumbled back a step. "How can—" Her breath caught in her throat. "I picked that name on a whim. How can there be a Cross vault here?"
The word CROSS began to glow, letter by letter, golden magic spilling outwards as powerful enchantments disengaged all at once. Raven felt them release like locks snapping open in rapid succession.
She flew backward and landed lightly on the stone floor as the vault door began to open.
Inside, a tall stone figure sat motionless on top of a raised platform. It was humanoid in shape, carved from some kind of stone. Cracks spiderwebbed across its surface.
Without warning, the stone shell burst apart violently, shards flying outwards disintegrating before they could strike her.
A living figure stepped out from the smoke.
It was revealed to be a tall, red-haired, woman standing nearly six-foot-one, with obsidian-gray eyes and a striking body.
She looked directly at Raven.
"You are Raven Cross, correct? A member of the long-lost Cross family."
Raven raised both hands defensively. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. You've got the wrong person here."
She shook her head sharply. "I picked that name on a whim. I don't have anything to do with whatever this is."
The woman's expression did not change. "No one can simply choose the name Cross."
She stepped forward, her voice calm but absolute. "Welcome back Raven Cross."
Raven frowned. "What do you mean?"
The woman descended from the platform. "My name is Miranda."
She stopped several paces away. "I am the silent guardian of this vault. Vault Zero of Gringotts Bank."
Miranda continued evenly, "This vault was founded by the ancestors of the Cross family. A family that rose to prominence as one of the foundational lineages of magic in London—and beyond."
Her gaze sharpened. "A family that vanished as quickly as it rose."
She looked directly into Raven's eyes. "You are a long-lost descendant of the Cross family."
Raven shook her head again. "That's impossible. I don't have any biological or maternal link to this world."
Miranda answered. "The inheritance of the Cross family is not determined by blood alone."
She took another step closer. "Certain criteria must be met to be recognized as a member of the Cross lineage."
Her eyes remained locked on Raven. "You have met those requirements."
Miranda's voice softened only slightly as she finished, "Otherwise how did fate guide you here?"
