Miranda watched Raven carefully, eyes expectant, and unmoving. The silence in Vault Zero stretched until Raven finally scratched the back of her head, her expression tense. "I don't know what would qualify me as a member of the Cross lineage. I honestly just made the last name up from looking at a church cross when a police officer stood in front of me so that I wouldn't seem weird or suspicious only having a first name. Not to mention my father's an interdimensional, world-destroying demon."
Miranda laughed, warm and casual, echoing faintly through the obsidian chamber. "Isn't everyone's father some sort of diabolical evil maniac? That's nothing rare these days."
Raven exhaled. "That is true where I come from, but in this world, I think something like that is very unusual."
"That's the key word, Raven. This world," Miranda said, her tone shifting slightly as her smile faded into something more serious.
"You are a traveler to this world, and that is the qualification to be a member of the Cross family." She raised one hand and gestured towards the glowing vault behind them. "And the fact that you chose Cross as your last name is no coincidence. It is a meeting of fate and opportunity."
Miranda stepped forward slowly. "These qualifications allow you to be a descendant of the Cross lineage."
Raven studied her with narrowed eyes. "Are you telling me that I would be what's classified as a traveler in my world? So because I'm a traveler to this world—somebody who transmigrated, I guess, but didn't actually die—that qualifies me as a descendant of the Cross lineage?"
"Exactly, Raven Cross," Miranda replied. "You are the newest, and probably last, descendant of the Cross lineage. A traveler from another world. Somebody who has found her way into this one by opportunity, chance, or perhaps something even more mysterious."
"You have been brought to this world. And because of that, you have been acknowledged as a descendant of the Cross lineage."
Raven tilted her head slightly. "So the magic that you possess is not from this world either?"
"Not quite, Raven. Not quite," Miranda said softly.
"The opportunity to meet me was a chance within the chance of you choosing the last name Cross. The fact that you found me proves that fate is aligning for you to inherit a mantle that is far greater than anything that this world has faced in centuries."
Her face hardened. "The fact that I have awakened means forces are at work in this world. Forces that are awakening."
"You will soon have to face and defend this world against threats that, honestly, from what I can feel of the magic users in London alone, many of the people in this world are not capable of facing."
Raven let out a long breath. "You're telling me that I have to defend a magical world from threats that the people in this current world aren't capable of defending against?"
"I know it sounds like fun, doesn't it?" Miranda said, her voice dry and measured.
"What I want to do is learn all about the magical knowledge of this world."
"Why do you think we occupy Vault Zero of Gringotts Bank?" Miranda asked, stepping back and gesturing to the massive chamber. "The Cross lineage—the members of the Cross family through the millennia—are one of the founding members of the magical world."
"We helped to bring magic to this world. We helped to establish the laws of magic that govern this world."
"It's not just the Cross family that did this alone," she added. "It was a convergence of forces from all over the world that helped to create the magical laws that bind this world."
"It was a convergence of different species, different races, and humanity itself that helped shape magic as it exists today."
Miranda sighed, her shoulders dropping faintly. "But now, from what I can feel in the magical world, this knowledge has long been forgotten by humanity."
"The other races that once occupied this world have retreated to their own realms and rarely interact with the wizarding world of London—or anywhere else, for that matter."
"If what my counterparts in the other bank vaults around the world are telling me is true—"
Raven cut in, frowning. "So you have counterparts in other Gringotts banks around the world?"
Miranda nodded. "That's the beauty of Gringotts Bank. They have one in every major wizarding community around the world."
"Vault Zero exists for the Cross family in every single one."
"We are considered the guardian lineage of magic in this world."
Miranda took one slow step toward her. "I offer you an opportunity to expand your understanding of magic to a level that few could ever comprehend."
"And in exchange for this knowledge, Raven, I ask you to travel beside this generation's current focal point."
She paused meaningfully. "Somebody you've already met. A certain Harry Potter."
Raven's eyes widened slightly. "While he interacts with and deals with threats on a local level, you will grow stronger by his side and deal with threats on a planetary level."
Raven groaned. "So you're telling me that you want me to defend this planet against ancient awakening abominations while that kid Harry Potter, who's no older than twelve, defends it against some sort of regional threat?"
"I know it sounds like fun, doesn't it?" Miranda said again, this time with a quiet confidence. "I truly think you'll have a great time."
Raven sighed. "Fine. Fine. Fine."
She crossed her arms slowly. "This world is pretty peaceful, and I like the people I've met so far. I would hate for anything to happen to the people that I care about already."
"Honestly, I don't want to go back to my old world."
Her voice softened. "If I can make a living here by defending the people around me from threats that are much grander than they can comprehend, it's a small price to pay for the security and belonging that I've found."
Miranda's expression softened. "It sounds like you've achieved something that few travelers who arrive here ever do. A sense of belonging."
Raven nodded faintly. "I would have had to have a sense of belonging to my original world to even care that much about it."
"The fact is, I was created by my father, Trigon—an interdimensional entity—to destroy everything around me."
"Here, his influence no longer controls me."
"So I might as well inherit the mantle of the Cross family. And through it, I will master my father's magic as well."
