Raven looked at Harry seriously and said, "Harry, you need to seriously consider that you may be different from other people. When you attract other people's attention with your unique abilities, it's going to cause a lot of problems for the adults and children around you. I can't really mention much right now, but you'll find out in the near future why. You're just going to have to trust me on this."
Harry frowned slightly and asked, "So you are telling me I can't tell anyone that I can talk to snakes, or that sometimes when I want something to happen, it mysteriously does?"
Raven nodded. "Exactly. You can't tell anyone about those abilities, or it may end up hurting the people around you—the people you care about. And I don't think you want to see that happen."
Harry thought for a moment, then nodded. "Alright, Raven. I trust you. I won't mention anything to anyone. You said I'll find out what's going on in the future—how long will that be?"
Raven replied calmly, "Within a year. Probably on your eleventh birthday."
Harry's eyes widened. "Is that my birthday present?"
Raven let out a short laugh. "Not from me. But I'm sure from somebody else it will be."
Harry's expression dimmed. "I don't really know anybody else besides you and the Dursleys."
Raven shook her head gently. "Harry, you have far more friends than you could possibly imagine. They just haven't found the right time to express themselves to you yet. But don't worry—it's coming."
Harry scratched the back of his head. "Alright, Raven. I believe you. I don't know why, but I have a strange feeling that you're right."
Raven's voice lowered slightly. "Trust your feelings, Harry. They will guide you in the darkest moments of your life going forward. Trust your heart, and trust your feelings—sometimes even more than logic itself. Your feelings are the key to your power."
Harry looked at her curiously. "Do you have powers like me?"
Raven answered, "You'll find out soon enough, buddy."
Harry narrowed his eyes playfully. "I think you do have power. You just don't want to tell me."
Raven shrugged. "It could be."
Harry groaned. "Oh, you're just teasing me now."
Raven replied, "Alright, skunkhead."
"Don't call me skunkhead!" Harry protested. "I don't even have blonde highlights!"
Raven waved him off. "Alright. Why don't you show me that snake?"
Harry led her out into the garden. Nestled among the bushes was a small green garden snake, its body coiled loosely in the sunlight.
"So you can talk to the garden snake, huh?" Raven asked.
Harry nodded eagerly. "Yeah. Watch this."
He crouched and spoke in Parseltongue. "This is my friend, Raven. Why don't you greet her?"
The snake lifted its head and replied, "A shiny, shiny girl with blue hair."
Harry glanced back at Raven. "I told it to introduce itself to you."
The snake slithered forward, gently tapping its head against Raven's shoe before bobbing its head.
"It says hi," Harry added.
Raven knelt and gently touched the snake's head. The snake immediately curled around her arm, looping comfortably as if it found a perch to sleep on.
Raven's expression shifted. "Harry… where did you find this snake?"
Harry shrugged. "It just showed up here all of a sudden. I never saw snakes around here before, but this one appeared. It was really intelligent—it talked to me right away."
Raven pressed, "It didn't ask you to do anything? Didn't say anything strange?"
Harry shook his head. "No. I just realized I could talk to it like that giant snake at the zoo. Then I introduced it to you. Now it's kind of sleeping on you, isn't it?"
Raven studied the snake carefully. "I don't know. I feel something strange from it. Not familiar—but not uncomfortable either."
"That's weird," Harry said.
"Do you think anything in our lives is normal at this point?" Raven asked. "We're living in an orphanage."
Harry laughed. "That's true. Speaking of which, I feel a lot stronger lately. I don't know what happened, but even compared to a few days ago, my body feels different."
Raven considered it. "It could be from eating properly. Or you might just have a strange physique."
Harry blinked. "What's a physique?"
"Your body, idiot," Raven said flatly.
"Hey!" Harry protested. "Don't call me an idiot. I'm just slow sometimes, okay? I'm only ten!"
Raven laughed. "Alright, alright."
The back door opened and Claire called out, "Raven, did you teach Cindy how to read those words and explain the difference between 'two'?"
"Yes, Ms. Thompson," Raven answered.
Claire sighed. "How many times do I have to tell you to call me Claire?"
Raven replied innocently, "I just wanted to get on your nerves."
Claire laughed. "You little rascal."
She chased Raven across the yard, and Harry quickly joined in. "I want in too!"
They collapsed together in laughter before Claire finally stood and said, "Alright, you two. Enough fooling around. I need to start arranging your study materials."
"I already go to school," Harry said.
Claire shook her head. "We're not sending you back to that school where you were bullied. And actually—this orphanage doubles as a school. I teach here."
Harry blinked. "So I don't have to go to a regular school?"
"Of course not," Claire replied. "My circumstances are unique, and I take pride in educating the children who live here."
"You're very dedicated, Claire," Raven said sincerely.
Claire shrugged. "It's what any young woman would do."
Harry said, "I don't think so."
Claire waved them inside. "Alright, inside. I'll gather some materials and set you both up with a curriculum."
