Chapter 8 - A Small Disturbance

The next day felt normal.

Almost too normal.

---

Classes continued.

Teachers lectured.

Students took notes.

Nothing unusual.

---

Which was exactly why Izuya noticed it.

---

"Something's off," he muttered quietly.

---

Ophelia, sitting one row ahead, turned around immediately.

"What is?"

---

Izuya rested his chin on his hand.

"…Too quiet."

---

She stared at him.

"This is a classroom."

"Yes."

"So it's supposed to be quiet."

---

Izuya didn't respond.

Because that wasn't what he meant.

---

It wasn't the sound.

It was the pattern.

---

He closed his eyes briefly.

---

Inside the Void—

The classroom reconstructed instantly.

Students appeared in their seats.

Teacher at the front.

Sunlight through the windows.

---

He replayed the morning.

Step by step.

---

Teacher enters.

Lecture begins.

Students respond.

---

Normal.

---

Again.

---

Something small.

Almost invisible.

---

A delay.

---

Izuya stopped the simulation.

Focused.

Replayed it again.

---

There.

---

Two students near the back.

They reacted half a second later than expected.

Not random.

Consistent.

---

"…Why?" he murmured.

---

The Azure Bird appeared on a desk nearby.

Watching.

---

Izuya frowned slightly.

---

Back in reality, his eyes opened.

---

Ophelia was still staring at him.

"Well?"

---

"…Nothing important."

---

She narrowed her eyes.

"That means it's important."

---

Sakura, sitting beside him today, glanced between them.

"What did you notice?" she asked quietly.

---

Izuya hesitated.

Then said:

"…Behavior lag."

---

Ophelia blinked.

"…What?"

---

"Some students are reacting slightly slower than they should."

---

"That's your problem?" she said.

---

"Yes."

---

She leaned back in her chair.

"You're insane."

---

Sakura didn't dismiss it.

"Is it intentional?" she asked.

---

Izuya didn't answer.

Because that was the problem.

---

He didn't know.

---

---

Lunch break.

---

The courtyard was louder than usual today.

More conversations.

More attention.

---

Izuya walked slightly away from the main crowd.

Same as always.

---

But this time—

he wasn't alone.

---

Sakura followed him.

Not closely.

Not obviously.

Just… there.

---

Ophelia joined a moment later.

"You two are boring," she said.

---

Izuya sat on the same bench as yesterday.

"…Okay."

---

Ophelia dropped down beside him again.

"You've been weird since morning," she said.

---

"Normal."

---

"No, even more than normal."

---

Sakura sat on the other side.

"What did you mean by 'behavior lag'?" she asked.

---

Izuya looked at the ground.

"…Timing differences."

---

"Explain."

---

He picked up a small pebble and rolled it between his fingers.

"People react based on patterns."

---

Sakura nodded slightly.

---

"If something changes," Izuya continued, "even slightly, the pattern shifts."

---

Ophelia frowned.

"And?"

---

"And something shifted."

---

A pause.

---

Sakura spoke softly.

"You think someone is influencing behavior?"

---

Izuya didn't answer.

---

But his silence was enough.

---

---

Across the courtyard—

Arthur stood near the same spot as yesterday.

---

Watching.

---

Not openly.

Not obviously.

---

But carefully.

---

In his hand was a phone.

On the screen—

a simple interface.

---

A school network panel.

---

Nothing illegal.

Nothing obvious.

---

Just access.

---

Arthur tapped once.

---

Across the campus—

small notifications were sent.

---

Schedule adjustments.

Minor changes.

Subtle variations.

---

Nothing major.

Nothing noticeable.

---

Except—

---

for someone like Izuya.

---

Arthur looked up.

His eyes found the bench.

---

"…So you noticed," he said quietly.

---

A faint smile appeared.

---

"Good."

---

---

Back at the bench—

Izuya suddenly stopped moving.

---

The pebble slipped from his fingers.

---

"…It's deliberate," he said.

---

Ophelia leaned forward.

"What is?"

---

Izuya looked toward the main building.

---

"…Someone is changing the pattern."

---

Sakura followed his gaze.

---

And for the first time—

her expression wasn't just calm.

---

It was serious.

---

"Who?" she asked.

---

Izuya didn't answer immediately.

---

Because he already knew.

---

Across the courtyard—

Arthur Beaumont stood under the sunlight.

Perfectly still.

---

Watching.

---

Izuya looked at him.

---

"…Troublesome," he muttered.

---

The Azure Bird appeared in his mind for just a second.

Wings slightly tense.

---

And for the first time—

the quiet of his world didn't feel peaceful.

---

It felt…

disturbed.
