Chapter 9 - Pattern Breaker

The disturbance didn't stop.

---

By the next morning—

it had grown.

---

Not louder.

Not obvious.

---

Just… deeper.

---

Izuya noticed it the moment he stepped into the school gate.

---

Students moved normally.

Talked normally.

Laughed normally.

---

But the timing—

was wrong.

---

Someone dropped a pen.

The reaction came a fraction too late.

A group laughed—

but not at the same time.

A teacher called a name—

the response lagged.

---

Tiny delays.

Everywhere.

---

Invisible to most.

---

But not to him.

---

"…It spread," Izuya murmured.

---

He didn't go to class immediately.

Instead, he stopped near the courtyard.

Watching.

Analyzing.

---

Inside his mind—

the Void activated without him closing his eyes.

---

The school appeared.

Students became moving data points.

Every action.

Every reaction.

Every delay.

---

He mapped it.

---

Points of disruption.

Clusters.

Patterns.

---

"…Not random," he said quietly.

---

The Azure Bird circled above.

---

Izuya traced the pattern further.

---

The delays weren't equal.

They weren't everywhere.

---

They were concentrated.

---

Around specific areas.

---

Corridors.

Classrooms.

Common zones.

---

Connected by something.

---

"…Network," he realized.

---

Back in reality, his eyes sharpened slightly.

---

"…School system."

---

---

Class 2-B.

---

Izuya entered late.

Not that anyone was surprised.

---

Ophelia turned immediately.

"You look like you didn't sleep."

---

"I did."

---

"You look worse than usual."

---

"Probably."

---

Sakura watched him carefully.

"You found something."

---

Izuya sat down.

"…Yes."

---

"What?" Ophelia asked.

---

He placed his bag down slowly.

---

"The pattern isn't human."

---

A pause.

---

Sakura's expression changed slightly.

"…Meaning?"

---

"External influence," Izuya said.

---

Ophelia blinked.

"Speak normal language."

---

Izuya sighed.

"…Someone is using the school system to manipulate behavior timing."

---

Silence.

---

Ophelia stared at him.

"…That's not normal."

---

"No."

---

Sakura leaned slightly closer.

"Can you trace it?"

---

Izuya paused.

---

"…Yes."

---

A small pause.

---

"…But it's annoying."

---

Ophelia groaned.

"Everything is annoying to you!"

---

---

Lunch break.

---

Izuya didn't go to the courtyard.

---

Instead—

he went to the computer lab.

---

Empty.

Quiet.

Perfect.

---

He sat down at one of the systems.

Turned it on.

---

The screen lit up.

---

School network access.

Restricted.

---

Izuya stared at it for a few seconds.

---

"…Okay."

---

His fingers moved.

---

Fast.

Precise.

---

Not aggressive hacking.

Not forceful.

---

Just… slipping through.

---

Like he belonged there.

---

Inside the Void—

time expanded.

---

Ten hours.

Twenty.

Thirty.

---

Firewalls appeared.

He walked around them.

Security layers formed.

He stepped past them.

---

Not breaking.

---

Understanding.

---

"…You left it open," he murmured.

---

The system unfolded.

---

Access granted.

---

Back in reality—

only ten minutes had passed.

---

Izuya leaned back slightly.

---

"…Found it."

---

---

The data appeared.

---

System logs.

Automated triggers.

Behavioral nudges.

---

Tiny delays.

Inserted intentionally.

---

Not random.

---

Designed.

---

Izuya scrolled.

---

Then stopped.

---

A signature.

---

Not a name.

---

But a pattern.

---

Clean.

Efficient.

---

Familiar.

---

"…Of course," he muttered.

---

---

Elsewhere in the school—

---

Arthur stood near a window.

---

His phone buzzed once.

---

He looked at it.

---

A small notification:

Access detected.

---

Arthur's expression didn't change.

---

"…Faster than expected," he said quietly.

---

He locked the phone.

---

Then looked toward the direction of the computer lab.

---

"…So you chose to engage."

---

A faint smile appeared.

---

---

Back in the lab—

---

Izuya stared at the screen.

---

He could shut it down.

Easily.

---

He could remove the interference.

Restore normal patterns.

---

Return everything to quiet.

---

His fingers hovered over the keyboard.

---

Then—

stopped.

---

"…No."

---

He leaned back.

---

"If I stop it…"

---

He looked at the data again.

---

"…I learn nothing."

---

The Azure Bird appeared beside him.

Still.

Watching.

---

Izuya closed his eyes briefly.

---

"…So this is your method," he murmured.

---

---

When he opened them again—

---

his expression had changed slightly.

---

Not much.

---

But enough.

---

For the first time—

---

he wasn't avoiding the disturbance.

---

He was looking at it directly.

---

---

In the hallway outside—

---

Sakura stood quietly.

---

She had followed him.

Not all the way.

Just enough.

---

She didn't enter.

---

But she waited.

---

Ophelia arrived a moment later.

"Is he in there?"

---

Sakura nodded.

---

"…He's different today," she said softly.

---

Ophelia crossed her arms.

"Yeah."

---

A pause.

---

"…More alive."

---

---

Inside the lab—

---

Izuya looked at the screen one last time.

---

"…Fine," he said quietly.

---

Then he closed the system.

---

Stood up.

---

And walked out.

---

---

Across the building—

---

Arthur watched the hallway as Izuya stepped out of the lab.

---

Their eyes met again.

---

No distance this time.

---

No crowd.

---

Just a straight line between them.

---

Arthur spoke first.

---

"You found it."

---

Izuya replied without hesitation.

---

"Yes."

---

A pause.

---

Then—

---

Arthur asked:

---

"Why didn't you stop it?"

---

Izuya looked at him.

---

"…Because you wanted me to see it."

---

Silence.

---

Then—

---

Arthur smiled.

---

Not politely.

---

Not formally.

---

Genuinely.

---

"Correct."

---

---

And just like that—

---

the game between them

was no longer hidden.

---

It had begun.
