Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The One Who Watches Us

The shadow stopped in front of them.

The air turned freezing cold.

Aanya felt her breath hitch as she looked at it.

This wasn't like the others.

Not like the crimson shadow.

Not like Arjun's shadow.

This one felt… older.

Stronger.

"Arjun…" she whispered, gripping his arm,

"why is it just standing there?"

Arjun didn't move.

His eyes were fixed on it.

For the first time—

There was tension in his expression.

"It's not here to attack," he said slowly.

"Then what does it want?" Aanya asked.

The shadow shifted slightly.

As if it had heard her.

And then—

A voice echoed.

Deep.

Cold.

Everywhere at once.

"You broke the balance."

Aanya flinched.

Arjun's jaw tightened.

"What are you?" Arjun demanded.

The shadow didn't answer directly.

Instead—

It moved closer.

Aanya instinctively stepped back.

But Arjun pulled her behind him.

Protectively.

"She doesn't belong to you," he said coldly.

The shadow let out a low, almost amused sound.

"She never belonged to you."

Aanya's heart skipped.

"What… does that mean?" she whispered.

Before anyone could respond—

The ground beneath them cracked.

Darkness spread like waves.

Aanya gasped as she felt something pulling her.

Not physically…

But from inside.

"Arjun… something's wrong…" she said, her voice shaking.

Arjun turned instantly.

"Aanya!"

Her eyes flickered.

For a second—

A faint crimson glow appeared again.

The shadow noticed.

And stepped closer.

"So it has awakened," it said.

Arjun froze.

"What are you talking about?"

The shadow's voice deepened.

"She is not just a vessel…"

A pause.

"She is the key."

Silence.

Aanya's breathing became uneven.

"Key… to what?" she asked weakly.

But the answer didn't come from the shadow.

It came from inside her.

A sudden flash.

A memory.

Not hers.

Darkness.

A room.

The same shadow standing beside her…

But she wasn't scared.

She was smiling.

Aanya gasped and grabbed her head.

"Make it stop!"

Arjun caught her instantly.

"Look at me! Aanya, stay with me!"

Her body trembled.

Her eyes filled with confusion.

"I've seen it before…" she whispered.

Arjun's heart dropped.

"What?"

"That shadow…" she said slowly, looking at the figure in front of them.

"…it was there long before that night."

Everything went silent.

Arjun looked at the shadow again.

This time—

With realization.

"You've been watching her… from the beginning," he said.

The shadow didn't deny it.

"I was waiting."

"For what?" Arjun asked coldly.

The shadow moved closer.

Its presence now overwhelming.

"For her to choose."

Arjun's grip on Aanya tightened.

"She already chose," he said firmly.

Aanya looked up at him.

Her heart racing.

Arjun's eyes softened slightly as he looked at her.

"She chose to stay," he said quietly.

For a moment—

Everything stilled.

But then—

The shadow laughed softly.

"A choice made in darkness… always has a price."

Suddenly—

A powerful force pushed Arjun back.

He staggered.

"ARJUN!" Aanya shouted.

The shadow moved toward her.

Fast.

But before it could touch her—

Another shadow surged forward.

Arjun's.

It wrapped around Aanya instantly.

Protecting her.

Arjun stood up, his eyes now glowing faintly.

Anger.

Possession.

Something darker.

"Don't touch her," he said coldly.

The air shook.

The shadows around them reacted.

For the first time—

The new shadow paused.

Aanya looked between them.

Her heart pounding.

"Why are you doing this?" she asked the shadow desperately.

Silence.

Then—

A quiet answer.

"Because if she remembers…"

A pause.

"Everything will end."

Aanya froze.

"What will end?" she whispered.

The shadow leaned closer.

"Everything you think is real."

Arjun stepped forward instantly.

"That's enough."

His shadow rose higher.

Stronger.

The two forces faced each other again.

Aanya stood in between.

Confused.

Scared.

But something inside her…

Was starting to wake up.

And for the first time—

Her shadow moved.

On its own.

Arjun saw it.

His eyes widened slightly.

"Aanya…" he whispered.

She looked down slowly.

Her shadow…

Was no longer normal.

It stretched.

Twisted.

Becoming something else.

Something powerful.

"Because the moment her shadow moved… Arjun realized—he wasn't the only one who had changed."
