The Silence After Victory
The forest was unnaturally quiet.
No wind.
No sound.
Only the faint echoes of collapsing energy still lingered in the air where the gate had once existed.
Kael stood motionless, staring at the empty space in front of him. The battlefield was gone. The tower had vanished. The gate had collapsed completely.
And yet—
The feeling remained.
Something was wrong.
Leon broke the silence first.
"…That's it?" he said, glancing around. "We just win and go home?"
Kael didn't respond immediately.
His breathing had slowed, but his body still felt heavy. The power he had released moments ago—Abyss Domain Phase Three—had drained more than he expected.
Seraphine stepped forward, her eyes scanning the surroundings carefully.
"No," she said quietly. "It's not over."
Kael finally spoke.
"I know."
He raised his hand slightly. The Abyss Ring flickered faintly.
The connection…
It wasn't gone.
It had only been cut temporarily.
Professor Valen approached, his expression serious.
"The gate is destroyed," he said. "But whatever was maintaining it… wasn't fully erased."
Kael turned toward him.
"Meaning?"
Valen hesitated.
"Meaning this wasn't the source."
Silence fell again.
Leon frowned.
"So we just destroyed… what? A branch?"
Seraphine nodded.
"A fragment of something larger."
Kael looked back at the empty space.
Then he understood.
The commander wasn't the true enemy.
Not even close.
