Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 — Eyes That Notice Everything

The morning sun in Jinlu spilled across the Jinlu International University (JIU) courtyard, casting long shadows across the cobblestones and polished fountains.

Students bustled past, laughing, exchanging notes, or running late for classes. Meilin Huang walked alongside her friends — Lin Xiaoyi, the cheerful spark; the athletic, ever-protective girl, Zhao Lian; and the effortlessly charming Ren Kai — and tried to keep her mind on the day ahead.

"C'mon, Meilin," Xiaoyi said, tugging her arm. "If you're late to Professor Liu's lecture again, he'll roast you in front of the entire class!"

Meilin smiled faintly, grateful for the distraction. School life in Jinlu was strange and exciting, but it also carried a tension she could never shake: the Liang mansion, the portal, and Kael Liang, who had become an invisible shadow following her thoughts wherever she went.

"Don't worry," Meilin said, adjusting her bag. "I'll survive."

Ren Kai grinned. "That's the spirit. But if you're stressed, just tell me — I have a knack for making people relax." He leaned closer, playful eyes glinting. "Or distracting them."

Meilin laughed softly, feeling a warmth she hadn't expected. Ren Kai's charm was easy, light, and effortless — a welcome contrast to the mansion's weight and Kael's relentless observation.

Her smile faltered slightly when she glanced at the back of the lecture hall. Kael Liang was seated there as always, posture perfect, dark eyes sharp and calculating.

Today, though, there was something more — a faint narrowing of his gaze when it met hers, a subtle arch of the brow that made her pulse quicken.

The lecture began, but Meilin's attention was divided. She scribbled notes mechanically, her mind working overtime to maintain balance: how to blend in with her friends, how to act properly with the Liang family, and how to keep the portal secret while still helping her real family.

After class, Ren Kai called her over, tossing a notebook onto her lap. "You missed a couple of points during the lecture," he said with a teasing smirk. "Lucky for you, I'm here."

Meilin shook her head, smiling. "You make it sound like I'm hopeless."

"Maybe you are," he teased. "But that's why I like helping you."

Before she could respond, Kael's presence loomed at the courtyard edge. His voice was calm, low, but carried a weight that made nearby students instinctively quiet.

"Meilin," he said, stepping closer. His dark eyes scanned her, sharp and unyielding. "I notice your absences. You are often… elsewhere. Distracted. Is something troubling you?"

Meilin froze. Her chest tightened, and she realized that Kael's intelligence was more than just sharpness — it was a blade that cut through the carefully constructed mask she had built.

"I'm just… adjusting," she murmured, forcing a neutral tone. "School is… new for me."

Kael's gaze lingered. For a moment, the playful world around her — Ren Kai's teasing, Xiaoyi's laughter, Lian's encouragement — seemed to blur. Kael didn't move, didn't smile, didn't laugh. He only watched. And Meilin felt the pressure of his scrutiny pressing down on her, heavier than any exam, heavier than any debt or worry she had faced in Qingshi.

After a tense moment, Kael finally nodded and walked away, leaving her breathless and unsettled.

Ren Kai, noticing the tension, leaned closer with a grin. "That guy… he's intense, isn't he?"

"Too much," Meilin admitted softly, trying to regain her composure.

Xiaoyi put a hand on her shoulder. "Ignore him. You've got us — friends who actually like you."

But Meilin knew better. Kael's eyes didn't lie. He would notice everything. Every hesitation, every small theft of opportunity, every distraction.

That night, she returned to the mansion. She walked quietly through the halls, careful not to disturb the sleeping staff, and paused by the portal shimmering faintly behind the cherry trees. Her hand hovered over the golden light.

Another trip to Qingshi, she thought.

Another way to help them.

But the weight of Kael's gaze from earlier in the day lingered in her mind. She could almost feel him watching, anticipating, understanding.

Still, she stepped through.

The world shifted. Qingshi welcomed her in silence, the familiar smells and sounds filling her with relief. Her family slept peacefully, unaware of the dangerous tightrope their daughter was walking. Meilin placed a few coins on the table, smiled softly at the slumbering forms of her parents and brother, and whispered, "I'll protect you… no matter what."

Back in Jinlu, Kael's shadowed thoughts lingered on Meilin. Something was off, he knew, subtle but undeniable. He would watch. He would wait. And when the time came, he would confront her — not just about her actions, but about the truths she tried so desperately to hide.

Ren Kai, on the other hand, had no idea the depth of her secret, only sensing that Meilin carried burdens heavier than anyone at JIU could imagine. He was drawn to her honesty, her quiet determination, her subtle warmth. And somewhere deep inside, he decided he would help her navigate this strange, impossible life — even if it meant complicating his own heart.

And so, in the heart of two worlds, Meilin Huang's life became a careful dance: between loyalty and deception, love and responsibility, and two men who would shape her fate in ways she could not yet imagine.
