Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Road Beyond Ironvale

The night slowly faded as the first pale light of dawn spread across the sky. The river flowed quietly beside the trees, carrying away the distant sounds of Ironvale.

Near the small fire, Isla Whitmore, Ethan Hale, and Liam sat in silence while the mysterious fisherman Marcus Calder prepared his boat.

The flames crackled softly as Marcus added another piece of wood to the fire.

"You were lucky," he said without looking at them. "The river current was strong last night. Strong enough to carry you far from the patrol boats."

Liam rubbed his arms to stay warm.

"I'll never jump into a freezing river again," he muttered.

Marcus chuckled quietly.

"You might change your mind when soldiers are chasing you."

Ethan remained standing, watching the forest around them. Years of travel had taught him one important lesson—danger often followed silence.

"Are we safe here?" Ethan asked.

Marcus tied a rope to a wooden post near the riverbank.

"For now," he said. "But not for long."

He pointed toward the distant smoke rising from Ironvale.

"Once morning comes, Captain Roland Vance will send riders along the river roads. He's not the kind of man who accepts failure easily."

Isla looked down at the ground.

She could still picture the guards, the factory walls, and the endless rows of machines that had trapped her for years.

For the first time since escaping, she allowed herself to breathe.

"We really left," she whispered.

Ethan heard the words and turned toward her.

"Yes," he said gently. "You're free now."

But Marcus shook his head slowly.

"Freedom," he said, "is rarely that simple."

A few minutes later, Marcus pushed his small boat into the water.

"Come," he said. "The safest road is the river."

They climbed into the boat carefully. The wooden vessel creaked slightly as Marcus untied the rope and pushed away from the shore.

The river carried them slowly through a valley of thick forest. Tall trees leaned over the water, their branches forming a dark tunnel above the current.

The peaceful silence felt strange after the chaos of Ironvale.

Liam stared at the trees with wide eyes.

"I've never seen a forest like this," he said.

Marcus smiled.

"This is the Graywood Forest," he explained. "It stretches for miles beyond the city."

Ethan studied the surroundings carefully.

"And where does this river lead?"

Marcus guided the boat with a long wooden pole.

"Eventually it reaches a town called Ravenport," he said. "A trading port near the sea."

Ethan nodded slowly.

"That could help us disappear."

But Marcus looked at him thoughtfully.

"You're not just trying to disappear," he said.

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

Marcus continued rowing quietly before speaking again.

"You went into Ironvale to find her," he said, glancing at Isla. "That means your journey didn't start there."

Ethan's voice became calm but firm.

"I've been searching for her since the war."

Isla looked at him with surprise.

"You traveled that far?" she asked softly.

Ethan nodded.

"I promised your father I would protect you."

The words made Isla's chest tighten.

"My father…" she whispered.

Marcus looked at her carefully.

"Your father worked near the factories once," he said slowly.

Isla looked up.

"What do you mean?"

Marcus rested the pole against the side of the boat and folded his arms.

"Before Ironvale became an industrial city, the factories were controlled by a powerful family."

"The Blackthorn Company," he continued.

Ethan frowned.

"I've heard that name."

Marcus nodded.

"They control trade routes, factories, and even parts of the army."

Liam whistled softly.

"That sounds like trouble."

Marcus looked directly at Isla.

"Your father worked for them."

Isla's eyes widened.

"That's impossible," she said. "My father was a farmer."

Marcus shook his head.

"Before the war… perhaps."

The boat drifted quietly with the current as the weight of Marcus's words settled over them.

"After the war started," Marcus continued, "many skilled workers were forced to join the Blackthorn factories."

Ethan looked at Isla.

"You never told me that."

Isla shook her head slowly.

"Because I didn't know."

Marcus sighed.

"There are many things you don't know yet."

The boat continued moving deeper into the forest.

Suddenly Marcus froze.

"What is it?" Ethan asked.

Marcus raised his hand for silence.

From somewhere in the forest came the distant sound of horses.

Several riders moving quickly along the river road.

Ethan's eyes hardened.

"Roland's men."

Marcus nodded.

"Looks like they started searching sooner than I expected."

Liam looked around nervously.

"What do we do now?"

Marcus pointed toward a narrow branch of the river hidden behind thick trees.

"We take the hidden channel," he said.

The boat slowly turned into the narrow waterway.

Branches scraped against the sides as the small boat disappeared beneath the cover of the forest.

A few seconds later, three mounted soldiers rode past the main river path.

Their armor reflected the morning sunlight.

One of them looked toward the water.

"Check the banks," he ordered.

But by then, Marcus's boat had already vanished into the shadows of the Graywood.

As the hidden channel carried them deeper into the forest, Marcus finally spoke again.

"If Roland catches you," he said, "he won't take you back to the factory."

Ethan looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

Marcus's voice grew serious.

"Because the people who control Ironvale… are far more dangerous than its guards."

Isla felt a chill that had nothing to do with the cold river.

Something much bigger was beginning to unfold.

And their escape from Ironvale had only been the first step.
