The deeper Nate and Lia moved into the factory, the heavier the air became.
It was not just the silence that made the place feel strange. It was something else. Something invisible, yet present in every corner, pressing down on them as if the building itself was watching.
Nate slowed his steps, his eyes carefully observing the long corridor ahead. The lights above flickered softly, casting faint shadows that stretched along the walls.
"Stay close," Lia whispered behind him. "This place is full of hidden surveillance."
Nate nodded slightly. He could feel it too. The quiet was not natural. It felt controlled.
They continued forward, moving from one corridor to another. The factory seemed endless, its design confusing and repetitive. Every turn looked the same, every door identical.
Then suddenly, Nate stopped.
"Did you hear that?" he asked quietly.
Lia listened carefully.
At first, there was nothing.
Then, faintly, a sound reached them.
A soft voice.
Almost like a whisper.
"…help…"
Nate's expression changed immediately.
"That sounded like a child," he said.
Without waiting, he moved toward a nearby metal door. He placed his hand against it. The surface was cold, colder than it should have been.
"There's someone inside," he added.
Lia's face grew serious.
"Yes," she said quietly. "And not just one."
What Lies Inside
Nate slowly pushed the door open.
The room beyond was large, filled with rows of glass chambers placed side by side.
Inside them were children.
Some were asleep, their small bodies resting under dim light. Others were awake, sitting quietly, their eyes distant and unfocused.
For a moment, Nate could not move.
"This…" he whispered. "What is this place?"
Lia stepped inside beside him.
"This is where it began," she said. "During the war, many children were taken from different villages. They were brought here for experiments."
Nate clenched his fists.
"Experiments?" he repeated.
Lia nodded slowly.
"They wanted to create stronger individuals. People who could follow orders without hesitation."
Nate looked at one of the chambers.
A young boy inside noticed him and slowly raised his hand, as if asking for help.
Nate stepped forward instinctively.
"We have to get them out," he said.
But Lia quickly stopped him.
"No. Not now," she insisted. "If we try to free them here, we will be discovered immediately."
Nate turned toward her.
"We can't leave them like this."
"And if we fail?" she replied firmly. "Then no one will help them. We need to understand this place first."
Her words were difficult to accept.
Nate looked back at the children. Their quiet presence filled the room with a heavy feeling.
After a long moment, he took a deep breath.
"We'll come back," he said. "I promise."
The Alarm
Suddenly, a loud sound echoed through the building.
An alarm.
It spread quickly across the factory, breaking the silence.
Lia's eyes widened.
"They found us."
At the same time, several metal doors in the corridor shut automatically. The lighting changed, turning into a dim red glow.
A calm, emotionless voice came from hidden speakers:
"Unauthorized presence detected. Security units activated."
Nate took a step back.
"We need to move."
But before they could leave, the door behind them opened.
The Guards Arrive
Three figures entered the room.
They were dressed in dark protective suits, their movements steady and controlled.
What stood out most, however, were their eyes.
They did not look natural. There was no expression, no emotion.
Only focus.
One of them spoke in a flat tone.
"Targets identified."
Without warning, they moved forward.
Facing the Threat
Nate reacted quickly, stepping aside as the first guard approached him.
The movement was fast, more precise than expected.
He raised his arm to block, feeling the strength behind the guard's strike.
These were not ordinary guards.
Lia moved to the side, watching carefully.
"They're enhanced," she said. "Be careful."
Nate focused, adjusting his stance. He avoided another attack, then pushed one of them back, creating space.
But they did not stop.
Their movements were coordinated, almost as if they shared the same awareness.
Nate realized something important.
"They don't hesitate," he said.
Lia nodded.
"They follow orders only."
The situation quickly became difficult. Every move Nate made was met with an immediate response.
They were testing him.
Learning his movements.
A Sudden Change
After a few moments, something shifted.
Nate moved faster than before, reacting instinctively.
One of the guards stepped back, as if adjusting.
Lia noticed it immediately.
"They're adapting," she said.
Nate tightened his focus.
"Then we don't stay here."
He moved toward the exit, signaling Lia to follow.
They needed another way.
Another path.
But before they could leave—
A slow sound echoed from the corridor.
Footsteps.
Measured. Calm.
Not like the others.
Both Nate and Lia turned.
Someone was approaching.
The Observer
A man stepped into the red light.
He was different from the guards.
Calm, composed, almost relaxed.
He looked at Nate with quiet interest.
"So, you made it this far," he said.
Nate narrowed his eyes.
"Who are you?"
The man ignored the question.
"You came looking for someone, didn't you?"
Nate stepped forward.
"Where is Jana?"
The man smiled slightly.
"That depends," he said. "Are you ready to see her?"
Nate did not hesitate.
"Yes."
The Girl in the Red Light
The man raised his hand slightly.
"Then look behind you."
Nate turned.
At the end of the corridor, a figure appeared.
A girl.
She stepped slowly into the red light.
Her movements were calm. Controlled.
Familiar.
Nate's breath stopped.
"…Jana?"
She stopped a few steps away from him.
Her face was the same.
But her expression was not.
Her eyes met his.
There was no recognition.
No reaction.
Only silence.
Nate took a small step forward.
"It's me," he said softly.
She did not respond.
The man's voice came from behind.
"She has changed."
Nate shook his head.
"No."
"She no longer remembers what you remember," the man continued.
Nate's voice grew firmer.
"She will."
For a moment, everything was still.
Then Jana slowly raised her hand.
A small hidden blade appeared from her sleeve.
Pointing toward him.
Her voice was calm.
"Target identified."
Nate stood still.
"…Jana."
No response.
Only readiness.
Only control.
And in that moment, Nate understood the truth.
Finding her…
Was only the beginning.
