Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Echoes of the Past

The night air felt unreal.

After everything they had endured inside the factory—the suffocating corridors, the endless red lights, the mechanical silence—the open sky above them seemed almost too vast, too quiet.

Nate stood still for a moment, breathing deeply, as if trying to convince himself that this was real.

They had escaped.

Beside him, Jana leaned slightly forward, her hands resting on her knees as she tried to steady her breathing. Her body was still adjusting, not just to the physical exhaustion, but to the flood of memories returning to her all at once.

Lia remained alert, scanning the area around them. Even outside, she did not trust the silence.

"We shouldn't stay here for long," she said quietly. "If that place had external surveillance, they might already be tracking us."

Nate nodded.

"She's right," he said, turning to Jana. "Can you walk?"

Jana lifted her head slowly. Her eyes met his—this time, fully aware, fully present.

"Yes," she said softly. "I can."

But there was something deeper behind her voice.

Something unsettled.

The Weight of Memory

They moved toward a broken road leading away from the factory, the distant structure still looming behind them like a shadow that refused to disappear.

Jana walked beside Nate, silent at first.

Then, after a few steps, she spoke.

"I remember everything."

Nate slowed slightly.

"Everything?" he asked.

She nodded.

"The village… the river… the days before the war… and after…" Her voice faltered slightly. "I remember being taken. I remember the experiments."

Lia glanced at her but said nothing.

Jana continued, her voice quieter now.

"They didn't just control us. They changed us. They erased parts of us and replaced them with commands."

Nate clenched his fists.

"They won't touch you again," he said firmly.

Jana looked at him, and for a moment, there was warmth in her expression—but also something else.

Fear.

"It's not that simple," she said.

Something Still Inside

They reached an abandoned structure a few hundred meters away from the factory—a partially collapsed building that offered some cover.

Lia quickly checked the interior.

"It's clear. For now."

Nate guided Jana inside, helping her sit down against the wall.

"You need to rest," he said.

Jana shook her head slightly.

"No… there's something you need to know."

Her voice had changed again—more urgent now.

"They didn't just program us to follow orders," she said. "They left something inside us… something deeper."

Nate frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Jana hesitated.

"Triggers," she said. "Hidden commands. Even if I resist, even if I remember everything… they can still activate something inside me."

The words hit harder than anything they had faced so far.

Lia stepped forward.

"So you're saying they can still control you?"

Jana nodded slowly.

"Yes."

The Hidden Threat

Silence filled the room.

Nate took a step back, processing what she had just said.

"That means…" he began.

"That means we're not safe yet," Lia finished.

Jana looked down at her hands.

"I don't know when it can happen," she said. "Or what triggers it. But I felt it before… inside the factory. When he gave the command."

Nate's expression hardened.

"Then we remove it," he said.

Lia looked at him.

"And how do you plan to do that?"

Nate didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Jana.

"We go back," he said.

A Dangerous Decision

Lia immediately shook her head.

"That's a bad idea."

Nate turned toward her.

"It's the only idea," he replied. "The factory might be damaged, but it's still the only place that has answers."

"Or it's the place that gets us all captured again," Lia said firmly.

Jana remained silent for a moment.

Then she spoke.

"He's not finished," she said.

Both Nate and Lia looked at her.

"The man in the factory," she continued. "He won't stop. If we run, he'll come after us. If we hide, he'll find us."

Her eyes lifted, steady and clear.

"But if we go back… we might have a chance to end it."

The Truth About the Factory

Nate crouched in front of her.

"Tell me everything you remember," he said.

Jana nodded slowly.

"The factory wasn't just an experiment," she said. "It was part of something larger. A network."

Lia's eyes narrowed.

"A network?"

"Yes," Jana said. "Multiple facilities. Different locations. All connected."

Nate felt a cold weight settle in his chest.

"That means…"

"That means destroying one factory doesn't stop anything," Jana said. "It only slows it down."

Lia crossed her arms.

"Then we're dealing with something much bigger than we thought."

The Signal

Suddenly—

A faint sound echoed from outside.

A low, mechanical hum.

All three of them froze.

Lia moved toward the window carefully and looked out.

Her expression changed instantly.

"They found us."

Nate stood up.

"How many?"

"At least three units," she said. "Drones… and something else."

Jana stood slowly, her body still tense.

"They're not just searching," she said. "They're hunting."

The Next Fight

Nate looked between them.

"Then we don't run," he said.

Lia raised an eyebrow.

"Seriously?"

"We fight," he said. "But smarter this time."

Jana stepped forward.

"I can help," she said.

Nate hesitated for a moment.

"Are you sure?"

She nodded.

"I remember their patterns. Their movements. Their weaknesses."

Lia gave a small smile.

"Then let's use that."

The Awakening Continues

The sound outside grew louder.

Shadows moved beyond the broken walls.

The factory was reaching out again.

But this time—

They were ready.

Nate took a steady breath, his focus sharper than ever.

Jana stood beside him, no longer controlled—but not entirely free.

Lia positioned herself near the entrance, prepared for the first strike.

This was no longer just about escape.

It was about ending everything.

And as the first drone entered the building—

The real fight began.
