Chapter 26 - Chapter 25: The Moment We Learned to Stay

Some moments test you.

Some moments shake you.

And some… teach you what it really means to stay.

The next morning felt quieter.

Not because something was wrong.

But because something had shifted.

Not broken.

Not damaged.

Just… understood.

Meera noticed it in the way she didn't avoid him.

Didn't overthink what happened yesterday.

Didn't replay every word in her head.

Because for once—

There was nothing left unresolved.

When she entered the campus, she saw him.

Standing near the same spot.

Waiting.

Not by chance.

Not by routine.

But intentionally.

And that mattered.

"You're early," Aarav said.

"So are you."

"That's still normal for me."

"Not for me."

Aarav smiled slightly.

"I know."

Meera walked closer.

No hesitation.

No distance.

Just… presence.

"Did you wait?" she asked.

Aarav shrugged lightly.

"Maybe."

Meera raised an eyebrow.

"That's not an answer."

"It's enough."

She almost smiled.

"Still avoiding direct answers."

"Only sometimes."

A small silence followed.

But this one—

Was easy.

Not heavy.

Not uncertain.

Just… calm.

"About yesterday—" Aarav started.

Meera shook her head.

"We already talked about it."

"I know."

"Then don't overthink it."

Aarav smiled faintly.

"That sounds like something I should say to you."

"It does."

"Are you sure you're okay?"

Meera looked at him.

And this time—

She didn't hesitate.

"I am."

Aarav studied her for a moment.

Then nodded.

"Good."

They started walking across campus.

Naturally.

Side by side.

No effort.

No thought.

Just habit.

But not the old kind of habit.

The kind that grows slowly.

Without being forced.

"You know," Meera said, "this feels different."

Aarav glanced at her.

"How?"

"It doesn't feel fragile anymore."

Aarav nodded.

"Yeah."

Meera looked ahead.

"Before, it felt like one mistake could ruin everything."

"And now?"

She smiled slightly.

"Now it feels like we can handle it."

Aarav's expression softened.

"That's because we did."

Meera nodded.

"Yeah."

They reached the library, but neither of them sat down immediately.

Instead, they paused near the entrance.

"You ever think about how much we've changed?" Aarav asked.

Meera let out a small breath.

"Too much."

"Regret it?"

Meera looked at him.

And for a second—

She didn't even need to think.

"No."

Aarav smiled.

"Good."

They walked inside, but instead of sitting at their usual table, they chose a different spot.

A small change.

But noticeable.

"You picked a different place," Meera said.

Aarav shrugged.

"Thought we could try something new."

Meera nodded.

"Yeah… I like it."

And that was the point.

Not everything had to stay the same.

Not everything had to follow routine.

Some things could change.

And still feel right.

"You know what I realized?" Meera said after a while.

"What?"

"I used to think staying meant holding onto things exactly as they were."

Aarav listened.

"But now?"

Meera looked at him.

"Now I think staying means choosing someone… even when things change."

Aarav's expression shifted slightly.

"That's… true."

Meera smiled faintly.

"I guess I'm learning."

Aarav smiled back.

"Slowly."

"Don't push it."

"I won't."

A quiet moment followed.

But it wasn't empty.

It was steady.

Like something had settled into place.

Later, they stepped outside again.

The air felt lighter.

The sky clear.

The kind of day that didn't demand anything.

"You're not overthinking," Aarav said.

"I told you, I'm trying something new."

"And it's working."

Meera nodded.

"It is."

They stopped near the gate.

The same place where so many moments had happened.

But this time—

It didn't feel like a place of questions.

It felt like a place of answers.

"Aarav," Meera said quietly.

He looked at her.

"Yeah?"

She hesitated.

Not because she was unsure.

But because she wanted to say it right.

"I think… this is the first time I'm not afraid of losing something."

Aarav's expression softened.

"Why?"

Meera met his gaze.

"Because I know we won't let it break easily."

Aarav nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

A small silence followed.

Then—

"And even if something goes wrong…"

Meera continued.

"We'll fix it."

Aarav smiled.

"Exactly."

They stood there for a moment longer.

Not speaking.

Not needing to.

Because everything felt clear.

Not perfect.

But real.

As Meera turned to leave, she didn't feel that familiar hesitation.

Didn't feel like something might slip away.

Didn't feel like she needed to hold on tightly.

Because now—

She understood something important.

Sometimes—

Staying isn't about holding on out of fear.

It's about choosing someone again and again.

Even when things aren't perfect.

Even when things change.

Even when it's not easy.

And this time—

They weren't just choosing each other once.

They were choosing each other…

Every day.
