Chapter 25 - Chapter 24: The Moment We Were Tested

Some stories grow in silence.

Some grow in happiness.

But some… are truly tested when things don't go as planned.

It started with something small.

So small that Meera didn't think it would matter.

Until it did.

"You're busy today?"

Aarav looked up from his notebook.

"Yeah. I have a meeting with the faculty for the next project."

Meera paused.

"Next project?"

Aarav nodded.

"They shortlisted a few students. I didn't tell you yet."

"Oh."

That was all she said.

Just one word.

Simple.

Controlled.

But something about it felt… off.

"You okay?" Aarav asked.

"Yeah. Why wouldn't I be?"

Aarav studied her expression.

"You sound different."

"I don't."

Aarav didn't push.

But he noticed.

Because something had shifted.

Just slightly.

The rest of the day felt… uneven.

Not distant.

Not broken.

But not as smooth as before.

Meera told herself it didn't matter.

That it was normal.

That he had his own things to do.

And she had hers.

But still—

The thought stayed.

He didn't tell me.

Later that evening, Meera sat in the library.

Alone.

Her notebook open, but her focus drifting.

Her mind replayed the conversation.

Again.

And again.

Why didn't he tell me?

It wasn't about the project.

Not really.

It was about something else.

Something she didn't want to admit.

"You're here early."

She looked up.

Aarav stood there.

She hadn't heard him walk in.

"Yeah."

Aarav sat down across from her.

"You didn't text."

Meera shrugged.

"I didn't think I had to."

Aarav frowned slightly.

"You don't."

A small silence followed.

But this one—

Didn't feel easy.

"You're upset," Aarav said.

"I'm not."

"You are."

Meera looked away.

"I'm fine."

Aarav leaned forward slightly.

"Meera—"

"It's not a big deal."

Aarav paused.

Then said quietly—

"Then why does it feel like one?"

Meera didn't answer immediately.

Because she didn't know how to explain it.

Or maybe—

She just didn't want to.

"It just… caught me off guard," she admitted.

"What did?"

"The project."

Aarav nodded slowly.

"I didn't think it was important yet."

Meera let out a small breath.

"It is."

Aarav looked at her.

"Why?"

The question was simple.

But it made everything clearer.

Because the answer wasn't about the project.

It was about—

Him.

"I thought you would tell me," she said quietly.

Aarav's expression softened slightly.

"I was going to."

"When?"

"Soon."

Meera shook her head.

"That's not the same."

Aarav was quiet for a moment.

Then—

"You're not upset about the project."

Meera didn't deny it this time.

"No."

"Then what?"

Meera looked at him.

And for the first time—

She didn't hide it.

"I thought we were… past this."

Aarav frowned.

"Past what?"

"Not saying things."

The words landed softly.

But clearly.

Aarav leaned back slightly.

Understanding settling in.

"I didn't mean to hide it."

"I know."

"Then what's the problem?"

Meera hesitated.

Then—

"I didn't want to feel like I wasn't part of it."

The honesty in her voice made the moment still.

Aarav didn't interrupt.

Didn't argue.

He just listened.

"I know it sounds stupid," she added quickly.

"It doesn't."

Meera looked at him.

"Then what is it?"

Aarav met her gaze.

"It's real."

The simplicity of his answer made her pause.

Because that's exactly what it was.

Not logical.

Not planned.

Just… real.

"I didn't realize it would matter this much," Aarav said quietly.

Meera exhaled.

"I didn't either."

A small silence followed.

But this one—

Wasn't uncomfortable.

It was honest.

Aarav leaned forward slightly.

"I should've told you."

Meera looked at him.

"Yeah."

"I wasn't trying to keep it from you."

"I know."

"Then why does it feel like I did?"

Meera thought for a moment.

Then said—

"Because I care."

The words came out softer than she expected.

But they stayed.

Right there.

Between them.

Aarav nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

Another pause.

Then Meera said—

"I don't like feeling like I'm on the outside."

Aarav's expression softened.

"You're not."

"It felt like it."

Aarav shook his head.

"You're not."

This time—

His voice was firmer.

Certain.

And it made a difference.

"I'll tell you everything next time," he added.

Meera raised an eyebrow.

"Next time?"

Aarav smiled slightly.

"There will be a next time."

Meera almost smiled.

"Of course there will."

The tension that had built earlier—

Slowly faded.

Not instantly.

But steadily.

Because nothing was being avoided.

Nothing was being ignored.

They were facing it.

Together.

"You know what's strange?" Meera said.

"What?"

"This would've turned into something worse before."

Aarav nodded.

"Yeah."

"And now?"

Meera looked at him.

"Now it didn't."

Aarav smiled.

"That's progress."

"It is."

As they packed their things, the moment felt lighter again.

Not perfect.

But real.

And that was enough.

As they walked out, Meera slowed her steps.

Then said—

"Next time, just tell me."

Aarav nodded.

"I will."

A small pause.

Then he added—

"And next time, don't pretend you're not upset."

Meera rolled her eyes lightly.

"I wasn't pretending."

"You were."

"Maybe a little."

Aarav smiled.

"Yeah."

They walked side by side.

The distance between them gone again.

Because this time—

They didn't let something small turn into something bigger.

They didn't let silence take over.

They didn't walk away.

Because sometimes—

What matters isn't avoiding problems.

It's how you handle them.

And this time—

They chose to stay.

To talk.

To understand.

Because love isn't just about the easy moments.

It's about the ones that test you.

And this—

This was one of them.
