Chapter 19 - The March

The army moved like a sleeping giant finally awakening.

Trains chugged along the new railways, carrying soldiers and supplies to the front. Horses galloped beside the tracks, messengers racing between units. The factory shifted from production to war—muskets, ammunition, field cannons rolling off the lines day and night.

I stood at the command post, a converted farmhouse near the eastern border, watching it all unfold.

Ren appeared beside me, dusted with road grime.

"Tanaka's forces are in position. Kageyama's northern troops will arrive by nightfall."

I nodded.

"Casualties?"

"None yet. Haruki's still three days out. He's moving carefully now—our scouts have been harassing his flanks, slowing him down."

"Good."

I turned from the window.

"Come. Let's look at the map."

The map covered an entire table.

Terrain marked. Troop positions. Supply lines. Every detail we'd gathered over months of preparation.

"Here." I pointed to a narrow valley—the only approach to our domain. "This is where we stop him."

"The same valley where you won your first battle?"

"The same." I smiled grimly. "He knows the story. He'll expect us to use the same tactics."

"And will we?"

"No." I traced a different route. "We'll let him think we're setting up there. But our main force will be here—behind this ridge. When he commits to the valley, we hit his flank."

Ren studied the map.

"It's risky. If he scouts properly..."

"He won't. He's overconfident. Backed by foreign gold, leading a massive army, convinced he's destined to win." I looked at him. "Overconfidence kills."

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[BATTLE PLAN: HAMMER AND ANVIL VARIANT]

[DECEPTION RATE: 78%]

[HARUKI'S CONFIDENCE: EXTREME]

[PREDICTED SUCCESS RATE: 64%]

Sixty-four percent.

Not great. But better than a head-on fight against superior numbers.

"The trains will move our reserves," I continued. "We can reinforce anywhere in hours. Haruki's army marches on foot. If we can pin them, break their morale—"

"They'll rout."

"Yes."

Ren studied me.

"You've thought of everything."

"Not everything. But enough."

That night, I couldn't sleep.

The farmhouse was quiet, but my mind wasn't. I lay beside Ren, staring at the ceiling, running through every scenario.

What if he outflanked us?

What if his foreign weapons were better than ours?

What if—

"You're thinking too much."

Ren's voice, soft in the darkness.

"Can't help it."

He rolled toward me. "Then think about something else."

"What?"

"Us."

I turned to face him. Even in the dark, I could see his eyes—steady, loving, present.

"You're not scared?"

"Terrified." He touched my face. "But I've been terrified before. I've learned to fight through it."

"Any advice?"

"Yeah." He pulled me closer. "Don't fight alone."

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[EMOTIONAL ANCHOR: REN - MAXIMUM]

[MORALE BOOST: ACTIVE]

[REN'S COMBAT EFFECTIVENESS: ENHANCED]

We made love slowly that night.

Not urgently, like before battle. Gently, like we had all the time in the world.

After, I lay in his arms, listening to his heartbeat.

"Whatever happens tomorrow," I whispered, "I need you to know something."

"What?"

"I never expected this. Any of this. When I was Hiroshi, alone in that apartment, I thought my life was over. That I'd never matter to anyone. That I'd die forgotten."

His arms tightened.

"But I woke up in her body. Found you. Built this." I blinked back tears. "Even if I die tomorrow—it was worth it. All of it."

He kissed my forehead.

"You're not dying tomorrow. We're not dying. We're going to win, and we're going to build something even bigger."

"How do you know?"

"Because I've seen you fight. Seen you plan. Seen you become something no one expected." He smiled. "Haruki doesn't stand a chance."

Dawn came grey and cold.

We dressed in silence. Armor. Weapons. The weight of command.

Outside, the army stirred. Soldiers cooked breakfast, checked equipment, said quiet goodbyes.

Tanaka met us at the command post.

"He's closer than we thought. His vanguard will reach the valley by midday."

I nodded.

"Stick to the plan. Let him commit. Then we hit."

Tanaka saluted and left.

Ren took my hand.

"Together?"

"Together."

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[BATTLE IMMINENT]

[HARUKI'S FORCES: 12,000]

[OUR FORCES: 10,200]

[TERRAIN ADVANTAGE: MODERATE]

[TECHNOLOGY ADVANTAGE: SIGNIFICANT]

[MORALE: HIGH]

[PREDICTED OUTCOME: 64% VICTORY, 28% DEFEAT, 8% STALEMATE]

I mounted my horse.

Looked at the army spread before me.

"Today, we fight for everything we've built. Our homes. Our families. Our future." My voice carried across the ranks. "Today, we show them why they call us the Thunder Legion."

Cheers erupted.

I caught Ren's eye.

He nodded.

We rode.
