Chapter 20 - The Battle

The valley waited like a held breath.

I watched from the ridge, hidden among pines, as Haruki's army poured into the narrow pass. Twelve thousand men. Banners waving. Armor glinting. Confidence radiating from every rank.

They thought they were hunting us.

They were walking into a furnace.

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[BATTLE PHASE: ENTERING KILL ZONE]

[HARUKI'S FORCES: 85% COMMITTED]

[OUR POSITIONS: CONCEALED AND READY]

[OPTIMAL STRIKE MOMENT: 3 MINUTES]

Ren crouched beside me, musket in hand.

"He's taking the bait."

"He's taking what he wants to see." I watched Haruki himself ride at the head of his army, surrounded by elite guards. "He wants to believe we're weak. That we'd hide in the same valley twice."

"His mistake."

"Our advantage."

I raised my hand.

Behind me, along the ridge, two thousand gunners tensed.

Below, in the valley, ten thousand enemy soldiers marched toward destruction.

I held my breath.

Counted.

Three. Two. One.

My hand dropped.

The world exploded.

Two thousand muskets fired as one. Smoke billowed. Screams erupted. The valley floor became a slaughterhouse.

Before the echo faded, I signaled again.

Cannons this time.

Our new field pieces—crude but effective—roared from hidden positions. Iron balls tore through enemy ranks, scattering bodies like leaves.

Haruki's army staggered.

Men fell. Horses screamed. Officers shouted orders no one could hear.

But they didn't break.

Not yet.

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[FIRST VOLLEY: 1,200 ENEMY CASUALTIES]

[ENEMY MORALE: SHAKEN BUT NOT BROKEN]

[HARUKI'S RESPONSE: RALLYING HIS TROOPS]

[RECOMMENDATION: COMMIT SECOND PHASE]

"He's tougher than I thought," Ren muttered.

"He's desperate. There's a difference."

I signaled again.

This time, Tanaka's cavalry struck.

Two thousand horsemen poured from a side valley, hitting Haruki's exposed flank. Sabers flashed. Men died. The enemy formation buckled.

But still held.

"Now," I breathed. "Now."

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[CAVALRY CHARGE: SUCCESSFUL]

[ENEMY LEFT FLANK: COLLAPSING]

[HARUKI'S CENTER: WAVERING]

[PREDICTED OUTCOME: SHIFTING TO 72% VICTORY]

I turned to Ren.

"Time to end this."

He nodded. "Together?"

"Together."

We rode.

The valley floor was chaos.

Smoke, blood, screams. Men fighting hand-to-hand. Muskets firing at point-blank range. Horses trampling the fallen.

I cut through it all, Ren at my side, our soldiers rallying around us.

"There!" Ren pointed.

Haruki. Surrounded by his remaining elite guards, trying to reform his broken lines.

I spurred my horse.

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[BOSS ENGAGEMENT: HARUKI]

[ELITE GUARD: 50 REMAINING]

[DIFFICULTY: HIGH]

[REN'S SUPPORT: ACTIVE]

They saw us coming.

Guards formed a wall. Muskets leveled. Swords drawn.

I didn't slow.

Didn't think.

Didn't hesitate.

The first volley passed harmlessly—they fired too soon, panicked by our speed.

Then we were among them.

I fought like I'd never fought before.

Hiroshi's knowledge. Kaito's skill. Merged into something faster, deadlier than either alone.

My sword sang. Men fell.

Ren fought beside me, back to back, covering each other like we'd done it a thousand times.

Minutes passed like seconds.

When the last guard fell, Haruki stood alone.

He stared at me across the blood-soaked ground.

"You." His voice shook. "What are you?"

I dismounted. Walked toward him.

"I'm what happens when you underestimate the wrong person."

He raised his sword.

I didn't give him time to use it.

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[BOSS DEFEATED: HARUKI]

[ENEMY ARMY: ROUTING]

[VICTORY: ASSURED]

[CASUALTIES: HEAVY BUT SUSTAINABLE]

I stood over his body, breathing hard.

Ren appeared beside me.

"It's over."

"It's beginning."

He looked at me.

"The war?"

"No." I gazed south, toward the distant sea. "The real war. Against whoever backed him. Against Kuroda. Against anyone who thinks they can threaten what we've built."

Ren was quiet for a moment.

Then he took my hand.

"Together?"

"Together."

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[ARC 4 COMPLETE: THE COUNTDOWN]

[ARC 5 UNLOCKED: THE SOUTHERN THREAT]

[NEW FACTIONS DETECTED: KURODA'S COMMERCE LEAGUE, SOUTHERN ISLES ALLIANCE]

[TECHNOLOGY ADVANCEMENT: POST-WAR INDUSTRIALIZATION BOOST]

[ROMANCE STATUS: REN - SOULBOND - ETERNAL]

[IDENTITY: KAITO-HIROSHI - FULLY INTEGRATED - STABLE]

The sun broke through the smoke as the last enemy soldiers fled.

I stood among the dead, holding Ren's hand, watching our army reform.

We'd won.

But victory, I was learning, was never the end.

It was just the beginning of the next fight.
