Chapter 88 - Shadows Return

The fragile peace didn't break all at once.

It shifted.

Subtly.

Like a shadow creeping in where light once held.

The shop was quieter again.

Not empty.

But quieter than it had been the past few days.

Lian Hua noticed.

Of course she did.

"Orders dropped again," she murmured, checking the list.

Chen Kai leaned against the counter.

"They're tightening things."

She nodded slowly.

"…I thought we had a little time."

"They don't want to give you time," he replied.

Silence settled.

Because now—

The pressure wasn't just returning.

It was evolving.

Across the city—

Zhen Wei stood in another meeting.

But this one felt different.

Colder.

Sharper.

More deliberate.

"This isn't a negotiation," one of the senior board members said.

Zhen Wei didn't react.

"It's a restructuring."

A pause.

"You're being removed from direct control of several divisions."

Silence.

Because that—

That was big.

Zhen Wei's gaze hardened.

"On whose authority?"

A familiar voice answered.

"Mine."

His father.

The room fell still.

Because now—

It was open.

Direct.

No more subtle moves.

"You're overstepping," Zhen Wei said coldly.

"I'm correcting your mistakes," his father replied.

A pause.

"Starting with her."

Back at the shop—

The bell rang.

Lian Hua looked up—

And immediately felt it.

Something was wrong.

A man in a formal suit stepped inside.

Not a customer.

Not casual.

Official.

"Miss Lian Hua," he said.

Her chest tightened.

"Yes?"

"I'm here regarding your business license."

Silence.

Chen Kai's posture shifted instantly.

"What about it?" he asked.

The man handed over a document.

"Your license is under review."

Her heart dropped.

"On what grounds?"

"Multiple complaints and inconsistencies."

"That's not true," Lian Hua said firmly.

"It will be investigated," he replied calmly.

Because now—

It wasn't just pressure.

It was escalation.

Again.

After the man left—

The silence felt heavier than before.

"They're not holding back anymore," Chen Kai said.

"No," she whispered.

"They're not."

Her hands tightened slightly around the paper.

Because this—

This could shut everything down.

Everything she built.

Everything she stood on.

That night—

Zhen Wei came.

Faster than before.

No hesitation.

"What happened?" he asked.

She handed him the document.

His expression darkened immediately.

"They're escalating," he said.

"I can see that."

Silence.

Then—

Lian Hua looked at him.

"…how much have you lost?"

The question caught him off guard.

"That's not important."

"It is to me."

A pause.

He didn't answer.

And that—

That was the answer.

Her chest tightened.

"Zhen Wei…"

He stepped closer.

"I'll fix this."

"No."

The word came faster this time.

Stronger.

He stopped.

"I won't let you lose more because of me," she said.

"This isn't your fault."

"But it's because of me."

Silence.

Because both statements were true.

For the first time—

The fragile peace cracked again.
