Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Avatar Arrives

It came on a Thursday morning at six forty-five AM.

The Sector 2 exclusion zone had been clear for thirty-six hours when the arrival began. Not a sudden breach, a gradual one, a tearing that took eleven minutes from first crack to full opening, the barrier peeling back in a way that was clearly controlled and deliberate, the act of something that had made this transit before and knew exactly how to apply force to a dimensional boundary.

Liu Yun felt it the moment the tearing started.

He had been in position since five AM, the entire army deployed, the Shadow Domain active at low intensity to avoid telegraphing his full capability before engagement began, Sera stationed at the northern edge of the combat zone with her ice-sense at maximum range. Voss had, to his credit, delivered on the evacuation and the clear-air agreement. The twelve-block exclusion zone was genuinely empty. Association response teams were positioned outside the perimeter with medical and containment equipment and orders to hold position unless Liu Yun explicitly requested assistance.

He stood in the center of Sector 2's main avenue and watched the Avatar come through.

It was enormous. That was the first thing, it arrived at approximately ten meters tall, composed of a darkness so absolute that it seemed to compress the space around it, its form unstable at the edges, the boundary between it and the surrounding air flickering like a badly defined shape. Four arms, each limb ending in something that served as a hand but was also a weapon, their tips burning with deep red mana of the Seventh Layer variety. Its face was a void, not blank, not empty, but actively absent, the kind of absence that is created rather than simply present.

It looked at him with the absence and it knew who he was.

"Shadow child." The Avatar's voice was Bael's voice at remove, the original reduced and transmitted through a fragment, the way music heard through a wall retains the melody but loses the instrument. "My King has seen you. He sends his regards and his contempt."

"Four equivalents," Liu Yun said to Sera through the communication link at his collar. "It's presenting as four simultaneous combat units in one body. Don't engage any single element, the coordinated response matters."

Sera's confirmation came back: "Understood. Field ready."

"My King knows what you carry," the Avatar continued. "He knows his scouts are in your Register. He is not angry. He is curious. He wants to see what the Chronicle has built this time before he destroys it."

"Then let's give him a good show," Liu Yun said.

He activated Sovereign's Authority.

The effect was immediate and absolute. His Shadow Domain expanded from two hundred meters to its Sovereign's Authority maximum, five hundred meters, the violet-edged darkness dropping over twelve city blocks like a curtain, consuming every shadow in its range and claiming them. His three hundred and forty-seven soldiers felt it, a unified surge of enhanced power racing through the Register like a current, lifting every unit to their absolute peak simultaneously.

He felt them. All of them. Bone Sentinels and Draugr and Fenris and Stormward and Nyx and the Einherjar and Herald and every creature he had ever extracted, every shadow, every soldier, three hundred and forty-seven wills focused through the Sovereign's Authority into a single unified command:

ATTACK.

The Avatar had been waiting for a charge, for a conventional opening. It was not prepared for what actually arrived.

Nyx hit it from below, erupting from the avenue's asphalt surface with the targeted precision of four thousand years' worth of combat experience, its void-form wrapping around the Avatar's lower sections. Stormward hit it from above, all twelve wings spread in the Sovereign's Authority, the deity's divine combat power amplified to a level that the Avatar's void-form could not simply absorb. Fenris hit it from the left, three-quarter scale, void-mouth opening.

And Sera's ice field came from the right, a wall of absolute cold that interacted with Liu Yun's Shadow Domain suppression to create a zone of zero-mobility between the Avatar's right flank and any means of escape.

The Avatar's four limb-weapons discharged simultaneously in four directions, pure Seventh Layer force, red and burning, and Liu Yun was already moving through Void Step, the instant shadow-transit that put him directly above the Avatar's void-face in three jumps, each jump using an Einherjar shadow as a relay point.

He reached down with Shadow Extraction and pulled.

The Avatar resisted.

He had expected that. A direct fragment of a Demon King's power, embedded in an Avatar form with the specific instruction to fight, it was not going to release without force. He pulled harder, channeling Void Core reserves he had been building for six weeks, the inverted-polarity mana that had been drinking in the world's power since his Awakening, and the Sovereign's Authority doubled his effective output, and the Avatar's void-face strained against the extraction like a wall trying to resist a gravitational event.

It held for thirty-three seconds.

Nyx pushed from below. Stormward crushed from above. Fenris held the form's physical integrity occupied. Herald worked on the cognitive layer, the Deity Fragment's divine interference fragmenting the Avatar's directional awareness. Sera sealed every escape vector with ice and the Domain's suppression held the Avatar's power reduction steady at forty percent of its maximum.

On second thirty-four, the Avatar broke.

Not explosively, implosively, folding inward into its own void-substance with a sound that was the absence of sound, a not-noise that pressed against the eardrums like a physical force. And then it was only shadow, only soul-substance, and Liu Yun's extraction pulled it all in.

He landed on the avenue's cracked surface and the Shadow Domain contracted back to two hundred meters and his army, released from Sovereign's Authority's peak, settled into their standard ready state.

The Sector 2 main avenue was demolished in a twelve-block radius. The asphalt was shattered. Three buildings had structural damage from the Stormward impact wave. The ice Sera had deployed would take two hours to melt at ambient temperature.

Absolute silence.

Then, through the communication link, Sera's voice:

"We need to work on the collateral damage profile."

"Agreed," Liu Yun said.

He looked up at the empty sky above Sector 2 and thought about Bael, somewhere in the Seventh Layer, having just watched his Avatar fold.

The Demon King now knew exactly what he was dealing with.

Good. Liu Yun was tired of being underestimated.
