The footage was everywhere by noon.
Six different civilian recording devices had captured portions of the engagement from outside the exclusion zone perimeter, not close enough for clarity, but close enough to record the Shadow Domain's violet-edged darkness dropping over twelve city blocks, the eruption of shadow soldiers from the avenue surface, the twelve-winged divine silhouette of Stormward against the morning sky. The sound recording on one of them, a residential balcony camera two hundred meters outside the perimeter, had captured the not-noise of the Avatar's implosion, which the audio analysis comments section had spent three hours trying to classify before settling on "something that should not be possible."
The Association's official statement had called it a "controlled high-output Gate clearance operation by authorized A-rank assets," which was technically accurate in every respect and practically meaningless to anyone who had seen the footage.
Director Voss called at two PM.
"The international Hunter community is aware," he said. His voice had the quality of a man reading from notes he had written to keep himself calm. "I have received contact from four national associations requesting information on the operational asset responsible for this morning's engagement."
"What did you tell them?"
"That it is a domestic matter under active administrative review." He paused. "That is no longer a sustainable position. Hunter Morrow, what happened this morning exceeds any classification in the existing Hunter taxonomy. I am going to need..."
"Tell them Shadow Sovereign," Liu Yun said. "That's the operational designation. It doesn't need further explanation right now."
A pause. "Shadow Sovereign."
"Yes. It's descriptive."
After the call he sat with Sera in the safe house and they were both tired in the way that comes not from physical exertion but from the sustained tension of executing a plan that had been designed under the assumption that reality would cooperate and had cooperated imperfectly.
"Voidshard," she said. She meant the extracted Avatar.
"Yes. The intelligence access opens in eighteen hours."
"What will you do with it?"
"Question it," he said. "Everything I can learn about the Seventh Layer before I descend. Layout, power structure, Bael's defenses, the other entities in his court." He paused. "The weakness."
Sera looked at him. "Every Demon King has one. The mythological tradition is consistent on that. Every being of divine or demonic power has a point of fundamental vulnerability. Something that predates their current form and remains in the structure because the universe doesn't let anything be invulnerable without cost."
"The Oracle will know," Liu Yun said. "Or Voidshard will, once I can access its cognitive material."
He slept for four hours, which was all his body required at current conditioning levels, and when he woke he checked his Register with the quiet morning habit it had become.
Three hundred and forty-eight. Voidshard, contained.
[NEW SYSTEM NOTIFICATION:][LEVEL: 38][VOID AFFINITY: 2,044. NOTE: You have crossed the 2,000 threshold. Void Affinity above 2,000 unlocks Tier 3 Shadow Extraction: allows extraction from entities with active will resistance. Enemies that resist extraction can now be overcome with sufficient Void Energy expenditure.]
He read the Tier 3 description twice.
Entities with active will resistance. Living enemies, conscious entities, beings that would fight the extraction with everything they had.
Bael.
The system was explicitly stating that when the time came, when he stood in the Seventh Layer in front of the Demon King himself, the extraction was possible.
He held that knowledge quietly for a moment.
Then he got up and went to work on the next problem, which was how to get to the Third Layer of the Underworld and find the entity the Oracle had mentioned, the one who had known the first Void Sovereign and who could prepare him for what the Seventh Layer held.
The shadow relay descent technique the Oracle had described, deploying shadows as anchor points through successively deeper Underworld layers, required preparation and resources he didn't yet have in full.
He had the resources to develop them.
He had, Herald calculated with characteristic precision, approximately thirty days before Bael's direct response arrived.
Thirty days to reach the Third Layer, find the contact, learn what he needed, and come back stronger.
He opened the Void Portal and stepped into the First Layer.
