Chapter 38 - Ch17- The Night Surrounded By Love...

The room stayed quiet after I finished speaking.

No one rushed to talk.

No one rushed to fill the silence.

Because what I had said… was heavy.

Joong was the first one to move.

He leaned forward, elbows on his knees.

"Care…"

His voice was softer than I had ever heard it.

"You went through all that… alone?"

I shrugged slightly, trying to look unaffected.

"Someone had to."

But the words didn't sound as strong as I wanted them to.

Alex shook his head slowly.

"That's insane."

"You built everything alone and still show up to college like nothing happened."

Ben spoke next, his voice filled with disbelief.

"And we were here calling you arrogant."

Daisy looked guilty.

"Yeah… we really messed up."

Kevin rubbed the back of his neck.

"We judged you without knowing anything."

Nova sighed quietly.

"Classic human stupidity."

A small awkward laugh escaped Joong.

"Yeah… we're pretty talented at that."

I tried to smile.

But the moment I did—

Something inside my chest cracked.

Cole noticed first.

He leaned slightly forward.

"You okay?"

I nodded quickly.

"Yeah."

But my eyes were already burning.

So before anyone could see—

I stood up.

"I'll… get something from the kitchen."

No one stopped me.

They thought I just needed a moment.

I walked into the kitchen quickly.

The moment the door closed behind me—

The tears came.

Not small ones.

Not silent ones.

Years of pain suddenly flooding out.

My hands gripped the counter.

"Why now…" I whispered to myself.

I had survived so many things.

But saying it aloud…

Telling someone the truth…

It broke something inside me.

I wiped my face quickly and started opening cabinets.

Maybe cooking something would distract me.

Maybe if I kept my hands busy—

"Care."

His voice came from behind.

I froze.

Slowly I turned.

Cole was standing in the kitchen doorway.

He had seen everything.

My red eyes.

My shaking hands.

The tears I was trying to hide.

For a moment he didn't say anything.

Then he walked closer.

"You weren't getting food."

I looked away.

"I was."

"Care."

My voice cracked.

"I'm fine."

He sighed softly.

"No you're not."

And before I could argue—

He gently grabbed my wrist.

"Come."

I resisted.

"Cole—"

"Just come."

He wasn't rough.

But he didn't give me the option to run either.

He guided me back into the living room.

Everyone looked up immediately.

Lyra noticed my face first.

"Oh no…"

She stood up instantly.

"Care…"

The moment she said my name—

The tears came again.

And this time I couldn't stop them.

Years of pain poured out all at once.

I covered my face with my hands.

"I'm sorry…"

My voice broke.

"I didn't mean to—"

Lyra immediately pulled me into a hug.

"Hey hey… no."

"You don't apologize for crying."

Her voice was warm.

Gentle.

The kind of warmth I hadn't felt in years.

My body shook as I cried against her shoulder.

Joong stood up awkwardly.

"…Okay this is officially the saddest scene I've ever witnessed."

Alex smacked the back of his head.

"Idiot."

But even Alex's voice was softer now.

Ben spoke carefully.

"Care… look at us."

I slowly lifted my head.

All nine of them were watching me.

Not with judgment.

Not with irritation.

With concern.

Real concern.

Daisy stepped closer.

"You've been carrying this alone for years."

Nova nodded slowly.

"That's not how life is supposed to work."

Kevin spoke quietly.

"You should have people."

Joong raised his hand.

"Correction."

"You DO have people."

I blinked.

"What?"

Joong grinned.

"Us."

Ben nodded firmly.

"Yeah."

"You're stuck with us now."

Daisy smiled softly.

"We're not leaving."

Kevin added,

"No matter how scary your personality is."

I sniffed slightly.

"I'm not scary."

Joong pointed dramatically.

"Debatable."

Alex sighed.

"Can you shut up for one emotional moment?"

Joong crossed his arms.

"I am contributing to emotional healing."

Everyone laughed slightly.

Even through my tears.

Cole finally spoke.

His voice calm.

But firm.

"Care."

I looked at him.

"You're not alone anymore."

"We're not leaving."

The words hit deeper than anything else.

My chest tightened again.

"People always say that."

Cole didn't hesitate.

"Then we'll prove it."

Lyra squeezed my hand.

"We promise."

Ash nodded quietly.

"Yeah."

"And we keep our promises."

For a moment—

Ash and Lyra exchanged a quick glance.

Something in their expressions.

Something familiar.

They still couldn't place it.

But something about Care felt strangely close.

Like a memory they couldn't reach.

I didn't notice their glance.

Because my emotions had finally broken completely.

I started crying again.

Harder.

Years of suppressed pain pouring out.

"I tried so hard…" I whispered.

"I tried not to need anyone."

"I tried not to care."

"But it still hurts."

Lyra hugged me tighter.

"It's okay."

"You're allowed to hurt."

Daisy rubbed my back gently.

Nova handed me tissues.

Kevin awkwardly patted my shoulder.

Joong looked like he wanted to cry but was pretending he didn't.

Alex sighed and said quietly,

"Yeah… we're definitely not leaving you alone anymore."

Cole stood nearby.

Watching silently.

But his presence felt steady.

Safe.

For the first time in years—

I didn't feel like I had to fight everything alone.

Eventually my crying slowed down.

Embarrassed, I wiped my eyes.

"Sorry."

Everyone spoke at once.

"Don't apologize."

I laughed weakly.

"Still getting used to that."

Joong suddenly clapped his hands.

"Okay."

"Enough sadness."

"Group therapy session complete."

Alex raised an eyebrow.

"And your solution?"

Joong grinned.

"We stay here tonight."

Ben nodded instantly.

"Actually not a bad idea."

Daisy smiled.

"Yeah."

Kevin added,

"It's Sunday anyway."

Nova stretched slightly.

"I'm in."

Alex looked at me.

"Your house. Your rules."

I looked around the room.

At all of them.

For the first time in years—

This huge mansion didn't feel empty.

So I smiled slightly.

"You can stay."

Joong raised both hands.

"YES."

"Victory."

Cole smirked slightly.

"Calm down."

Lyra laughed.

And the atmosphere slowly changed.

The tension melted away.

They watched movies.

Ordered food.

Argued about dumb things.

Joong tried to cook something and almost burned the kitchen.

Alex banned him from cooking forever.

Ben and Daisy started teasing Kevin.

Nova fell asleep halfway through the movie.

Lyra and Ash kept exchanging quiet glances at times.

Something about Care still felt strangely familiar to them.

But they stayed silent.

The night slowly turned into laughter.

Into warmth.

Into something that felt like home.

Hours later, when everyone was getting ready to leave—

I suddenly spoke.

"Wait."

They all looked at me.

"Stay."

Joong blinked.

"What?"

I hesitated slightly.

Then said quietly,

"You're my family now."

The words came out before I could stop them.

The room went silent.

Then Joong dramatically wiped fake tears.

"Wow."

"She finally accepted us."

Alex rolled his eyes.

"Relax."

But even he was smiling.

Lyra hugged me again.

"Family it is."

Cole simply nodded once.

And for the first time in many years—

The mansion didn't feel empty anymore.

Because now…

I wasn't alone.
