Chapter 18 — Lines That Must Not Be Crossed
Morning sunlight spilled through the tall glass windows of the mansion's living room, soft and golden, quietly replacing the warmth of the long night they had spent together.
For the first time in years, the house had felt alive.
Now it was slowly returning to silence.
Care stood near the large doorway, arms folded loosely, watching the group gather their things. Shoes shuffled across the marble floor. Someone yawned. Someone argued about who had stolen whose charger.
Joong stretched dramatically.
"I swear I haven't slept this well in months."
Nova, half-asleep, muttered, "You snored the whole night."
"I did not."
"You absolutely did."
Ben chuckled while grabbing his bag.
"Honestly, I'm surprised the mansion didn't collapse."
Alex rolled his eyes.
"If anything collapsed, it would've been because of Joong's cooking attempt."
"HEY—"
Laughter filled the hall.
Care watched them quietly.
It felt… strange.
Good.
But strange.
For a brief moment, she almost forgot the rules she had lived by for years.
Almost.
Cole noticed her silence first.
He leaned against the doorway beside her.
"You're quiet again."
Care didn't look at him.
"I'm thinking."
"That's dangerous."
She gave him a small glare.
Cole smirked slightly.
The others slowly gathered near the entrance.
Lyra tied her hair into a loose ponytail while Ash checked the time.
"We should go soon," Ash said. "Classes start in forty minutes."
Kevin nodded.
"Yeah. If we leave now we'll barely make it."
Joong looked around the massive hallway again.
"I still can't believe you live here."
Nova sighed.
"We know, Joong. You've said that twelve times."
"Because it's still unbelievable!"
Care finally stepped forward.
"There's something I need to say before you leave."
The room quieted.
Everyone turned toward her.
Something in her tone was serious.
Cole straightened slightly.
"What is it?"
Care hesitated for a moment.
Then she spoke calmly.
"In college…"
Her eyes moved across each of them.
"…we shouldn't act like this."
Silence.
Joong blinked.
"Like what?"
"Like a group."
The words landed heavily in the room.
Lyra frowned slightly.
"What do you mean?"
Care's voice stayed steady.
"In college… don't talk to me."
Everyone froze.
Ash spoke slowly.
"…What?"
Care crossed her arms again, as if building a wall around herself.
"Pretend we're not close."
Ben stared at her.
"You're joking."
"I'm not."
Daisy stepped forward, confused.
"But… why?"
Care took a quiet breath.
"Because I don't want people connecting us."
Kevin frowned.
"That doesn't make sense."
"It does to me."
Nova narrowed her eyes.
"You're planning something."
Care didn't respond.
Cole's expression hardened slightly.
"You expect us to ignore you?"
"In college, yes."
"And outside?"
"That's different."
Joong shook his head.
"That's weird."
Care looked at him.
"Maybe."
"But that's how it has to be."
Lyra studied her face carefully.
"Care… are you trying to protect us?"
Care's gaze shifted away.
"That's not the point."
"It kind of is."
Ash crossed his arms.
"Someone planning to cause trouble?"
Still no answer.
Cole spoke again, voice quieter now.
"You don't trust us?"
Care immediately looked back at him.
"That's not it."
"Then explain it."
"I can't."
The tension in the room thickened.
Finally Care said softly,
"Just trust me."
Silence.
They all exchanged looks.
None of them liked the idea.
But something in her eyes made them hesitate.
She wasn't pushing them away.
She was… protecting something.
Or someone.
Nova sighed first.
"Fine."
Everyone looked at her.
"If she says it's important, there's probably a reason."
Kevin nodded slowly.
"Yeah… she hasn't asked for anything before."
Joong scratched his head.
"Still feels weird though."
Ben sighed.
"Alright."
"But this better make sense later."
Daisy added,
"You can't just disappear on us inside college forever."
Care gave a small nod.
"I won't."
Cole watched her silently for a few seconds.
Then he said,
"You're terrible at explaining things."
"Probably."
"But fine."
He picked up his bag.
"We'll play along."
Care's shoulders relaxed just slightly.
"Thank you."
Joong suddenly pointed at her.
"But if you ignore us in front of everyone—"
"I will."
"—then I'm ignoring you too."
"That's fair."
Alex laughed quietly.
"This is the strangest friendship agreement I've ever seen."
Lyra stepped closer to Care.
"Take care of yourself today."
Care nodded once.
Ash added quietly,
"And if anything happens…"
Care finished the sentence calmly.
"You'll know."
Nova smirked.
"Mysterious as always."
The group finally began heading out the door.
Joong waved dramatically.
"Goodbye rich mansion owner!"
"Get out," Care said.
He laughed.
The doors closed behind them.
And just like that—
The mansion was silent again.
Care stood alone in the hallway for a moment.
Her calm expression slowly returned.
Then she whispered quietly to herself,
"It's safer this way."
Outside the Mansion
The group walked down the long driveway toward their cars.
No one spoke for a few seconds.
Finally Joong broke the silence.
"Okay seriously."
"What was that?"
Kevin shrugged.
"Classic Care."
Nova shook her head.
"No."
"That wasn't random."
Ben agreed.
"She's hiding something."
Daisy sighed.
"She always is."
Alex crossed his arms.
"Whatever it is… she thinks it's dangerous enough to separate us publicly."
Ash walked quietly beside Lyra.
Both of them seemed lost in thought.
Lyra finally spoke.
"She looked scared."
Cole glanced at her.
"Care doesn't scare easily."
"Exactly."
Nova leaned against the car door.
"Well."
"Now I'm curious."
Joong grinned.
"Oh I'm definitely investigating."
Alex immediately shut that down.
"No you're not."
"Yes I am."
"You'll make things worse."
"Probably."
Cole finally spoke again.
"We follow her rule."
Everyone looked at him.
"For now."
Ben nodded.
"Yeah."
"If she trusts us enough to ask that… we respect it."
Daisy sighed.
"Still feels wrong ignoring her."
Nova smirked.
"Welcome to Care's complicated world."
Kevin looked toward the road leading to the city.
"Speaking of complicated…"
"Sports Day announcement today."
Joong groaned dramatically.
"Oh no."
"I refuse to run."
Ash laughed slightly.
"You don't have a choice."
"Cruel education system."
Cole opened the car door.
"Let's go."
They all got into the cars.
Engines started.
And the group drove toward college.
Meanwhile — At the Mansion
Care stood near the large window, watching the empty driveway.
Her phone buzzed.
A college notification.
"Important announcement today in auditorium."
She read it quietly.
Then sighed.
"Sports Day…"
Her fingers tightened slightly.
Asthma.
Running.
Competition.
Trouble.
But she whispered softly,
"Doesn't matter."
She grabbed her bag.
Locked the mansion doors.
And walked toward her car.
Her expression was calm again.
Cold.
Composed.
By the time she reached college—
No one would see the girl from last night.
Only the quiet, distant Care.
The one everyone misunderstood.
And just as she wanted—
The one who walked alone.
