Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: Stranger?

The night over the city of Dichondra was calm, the streets below bathed in the gentle glow of floating lanterns that drifted lazily through the air. Their soft light reflected across the winding canals and vine-covered buildings, giving the city an almost dreamlike serenity.

High above those peaceful streets, Ethan moved silently across the rooftops.

His steps were light and deliberate, practiced enough that even the loose tiles beneath his boots barely made a sound. His sharp eyes scanned every corner of the city below, searching for anything out of place—any strange movement, any flicker of suspicious activity.

So far, nothing.

But Ethan had learned long ago that danger rarely announced itself openly.

As he crouched on the edge of another rooftop, preparing to leap to the next building, something caught his attention.

A figure.

On a distant balcony.

A girl sat alone, slumped slightly against the railing. Even from this distance, Ethan could see the tension in her posture. Her shoulders were tight, her head tilted downward as if weighed by invisible burdens.

She looked… stressed.

Ethan watched her for a moment.

Then, with a casual flick of his fingers, he tossed a small stone toward the balcony.

The pebble clinked softly against the railing.

"Hey…" Ethan called quietly. "Are you okay?"

At first, the girl didn't react.

Then a shadow shifted above her as Ethan moved along the rooftop, and she suddenly looked up, startled.

"Who's there?" she demanded, squinting into the darkness above.

Ethan stepped forward just enough for the lantern light to catch his silhouette. He raised his hands casually, showing he meant no harm.

"Relax," he said calmly. "I'm not here to hurt you."

He leaned slightly against the rooftop edge.

"Just someone who noticed you might need… company."

The girl straightened immediately, stepping away from the railing as she studied him carefully.

"I'm… I'm fine," she said, though her tone carried clear caution. "Why are you up there anyway?"

Her eyes narrowed.

"Are you some kind of thief?"

Ethan chuckled quietly.

"Thief?"

He shook his head with amusement.

"No. More like… someone who keeps an eye on things."

He rested one arm casually on his knee.

"Name's Ethan."

His gaze met hers with curiosity.

"And you are?"

The girl hesitated briefly before answering.

"Katelyn."

Her voice was polite, but there was still wariness behind it.

"Princess Katelyn."

Ethan raised an eyebrow slightly.

"And you… you're from the Land of Luminous Flame, right?" she continued. "One of the guests visiting our city?"

Ethan shook his head lightly.

"Not exactly."

He shrugged.

"I'm… just passing through."

His eyes studied her carefully now.

"But I can tell you have royal blood."

Katelyn blinked in surprise.

"And I have a feeling," Ethan added calmly, "you're not just sitting here for the view."

For a moment, she simply stared at him.

Then the corner of her lips twitched upward.

"Bold," she said, a small smile forming. "I like that."

She leaned slightly against the railing again, glancing briefly down at the lantern-lit streets below before looking back at him.

"You notice a lot for someone who just 'passes through.'"

Her eyes narrowed playfully.

"You're… not here to cause trouble?"

Ethan smirked faintly.

"Trouble? No."

He glanced across the quiet rooftops around them.

"Trouble tends to find me, though."

Then his tone softened slightly.

"I just figured someone like you might need a moment to breathe."

He nodded toward the quiet city.

"The whole place has been on edge lately, hasn't it?"

Katelyn's expression shifted.

She nodded slowly.

"Yes… more than you realize."

Her fingers tightened slightly around the railing.

"I can't tell anyone how stressed I am," she admitted quietly. "Everyone expects me to be perfect. To act like everything is fine."

She exhaled softly.

"But some nights…"

Her voice dropped to almost a whisper.

"It's just too much."

Ethan crouched slightly at the rooftop edge, lowering himself closer so they could speak without raising their voices.

"You don't have to act perfect here," he said calmly.

His voice carried quiet understanding.

"Not with me."

He gave a small shrug.

"I've dealt with a lot in my life too."

His gaze softened slightly.

"And sometimes… just talking to someone who doesn't expect anything from you helps."

Katelyn studied him carefully now, curiosity replacing much of her earlier caution.

"You talk like you've seen a lot too," she said quietly.

Her eyes searched his face.

"Who… who are you really, Ethan?"

Ethan hesitated.

Then he gave a small grin.

"I'm just a guy who hunts criminals."

He waved the thought off casually.

"Nothing glamorous."

"But I notice things."

His gaze returned to her.

"People."

A faint smirk returned to his lips.

"And right now… you caught my attention."

Katelyn blinked in surprise before a soft laugh escaped her.

"You really are bold."

She shook her head slightly.

"Most strangers would have left me alone… or worse, reported me to the guards."

Ethan shrugged.

"Not me."

He tilted his head slightly.

"I like to understand things before I act."

His eyes met hers again.

"And right now… you seem like someone worth understanding."

Katelyn's smile softened.

"Well… Ethan, I don't usually meet people like you."

She glanced toward the glowing city below again.

"It's… nice."

She paused briefly.

"In a strange way."

After a moment, she looked back up at him.

"But it's late."

Her voice held gentle concern.

"You shouldn't be wandering rooftops alone."

Ethan chuckled quietly.

"I can handle myself."

His eyes scanned the streets below instinctively.

"But you?"

He nodded toward her.

"You shouldn't be out here worrying alone."

"You never know what might happen."

Katelyn looked at him for a moment longer.

Then her gaze softened.

For a brief moment, the weight on her shoulders seemed to ease.

"Maybe you're right," she admitted.

She tilted her head slightly with a playful expression.

"But…"

Her tone grew teasing.

"Maybe it's not so bad having someone… watch over me for once."

Ethan's eyes glimmered with amusement.

"Then I'll stay."

He shrugged lightly.

"For a little while."

His voice softened slightly.

"Just enough to make sure you're safe."

Katelyn laughed quietly.

"I suppose I can allow it… stranger."

The two of them fell into a comfortable silence.

Below them, the city hummed softly with distant life.

Above them, lanterns drifted slowly across the sky.

And in that quiet moment—under the glow of floating lights and shadowed rooftops—something subtle formed between them.

A connection.

Cautious.

Unexpected.

But real.

Hours passed quietly.

Their conversation continued in low voices, occasionally interrupted by soft laughter.

For the first time in a long while, Ethan seemed relaxed. The sharp, intimidating edge that usually surrounded him had softened, replaced by something far simpler.

Peace.

But as the first pale hints of dawn began to touch the sky, footsteps approached across the rooftops.

Leo, Rein, and Helmond had returned from their investigation.

Ethan immediately straightened.

He stepped back from the balcony and gave Katelyn a respectful bow.

"I should take my leave, Princess."

His voice returned to its calm, professional tone.

"The city is secure. No anomalies detected."

Katelyn smiled warmly, though a small hint of disappointment lingered in her eyes.

"Thank you, Ethan."

She placed a hand lightly against the railing.

"Be safe."

Ethan's lips curved into a faint grin.

"Always."

With that, he stepped back into the shadows of the rooftops and disappeared, moving quickly to rejoin his team.

Leo listened carefully as Ethan delivered his report.

The city remained calm.

No disturbances.

No signs of the enemy.

Relief washed over him slightly.

But something else caught his attention.

Ethan felt… different.

Leo studied him quietly.

The brooding, intimidating figure he had known before now seemed lighter. There was a subtle ease in Ethan's movements, a quiet contentment that hadn't been there before.

Leo didn't comment on it.

But he noticed.

Helmond, however, was focused on something else entirely.

As the conversation continued, a cold unease crept slowly through him.

During the investigation in Willow, he had sensed something.

Something familiar.

The energy left behind by the attacker lingered in his mind like an echo he couldn't ignore.

It tugged at something deep within him.

Something unsettling.

But Helmond said nothing.

Rein noticed the shift in his expression almost immediately.

She gently placed a hand on his arm.

"Hey," she said softly.

Helmond glanced at her.

"Whatever it is…"

Her voice was calm, reassuring.

"You're not carrying it alone."

She gave a small, supportive smile.

"We'll figure it out."

"Together."

Helmond nodded slowly.

But his gaze remained distant.

His thoughts guarded.

Eventually, the conversation faded, and the team returned to their quarters.

The quiet city wrapped around them once again.

For a few precious hours, they finally allowed themselves to rest.

Meanwhile, in another chamber lit by the soft glow of a lantern, Alice remained awake.

Her quill moved rapidly across the pages of her diary.

Scratch.

Scratch.

Scratch.

She had spent the entire night studying the Land of Thaloun Grass—its history, its people, and the intricate magical systems that shaped its culture.

Maps, records, and ancient texts surrounded her.

Every new detail she uncovered strengthened the team's understanding of the region.

Every note she wrote could become the difference between success and disaster.

Alice paused only briefly before continuing to write.

In her quiet diligence, she proved herself to be far more than a simple chronicler.

She was the mind behind the team's strategy.

Their researcher.

Their analyst.

Their guide through the unknown.

And while the others slept, Alice continued working—ensuring that when the next challenge came…

They would be ready.
