Chapter 42 - Chapter 42: Chase in the Dark

‎Rein expertly steered her clouds through the night sky, her movements precise and fluid, dodging every spell and magical attack hurled by the pursuing mages. Leo, Alice, and the unconscious Helmond were separated but under her guidance—Rein's control of the clouds ensured they stayed together, with Alice following in her own flying cloud, acting as the team's navigator. Leo and Helmond moved almost on autopilot, guided by Rein's mastery.

‎Ahead, Rein veered onto a new path, taking the brunt of the mage assault to give her friends time to escape. With a deep exhale, she summoned a towering wave of water, hurling it toward the mages with force enough to knock them off balance but not to cause lasting harm. The sheer scale of her power stunned the attackers, leaving them scrambling as the wave surged past.

‎"Sheshh… this power is something I'm not ready to handle yet," Rein muttered, a nervous grin tugging at her lips as she glanced back to ensure everyone was following.

‎Her clouds streaked through the sky like streaks of silver and blue, finally catching up to Leo and Alice, where the field the Wizard had laid down had cleared—Helmond still unconscious, thankfully.

‎Minutes mattered. Prince Keane had already taken the next path ahead of them, and every second counted. They had to hurry, or the moment Helmond awoke, their carefully orchestrated escape could crumble into chaos.

‎They had to catch up because in the morning the ceremony will immediately start so they need to intervene immediately.

‎Back at the Dichondra City Nighttime

‎The city sparkled below with lanterns and decorations, a celebration for a wedding that neither heart truly wished for. On the balcony, Princess Katelyn clutched her speech, trembling as tears streaked her cheeks. She tried to memorize the words she was forced to say tomorrow, but each one felt heavier than the last.

‎Above her, on the rooftop, Ethan watched silently, his chest tight with helplessness. He couldn't be beside her physically, yet he refused to leave. The distance was cruel, but he needed her to know he was there.

‎"Katelyn…" he whispered, his voice barely carrying over the night breeze. She looked up, startled, and recognition flickered in her tearful eyes. Relief and sorrow battled in that single gaze.

‎He leaned closer to the edge, as near as he could without bridging the gap. "Rest your heart… just for a moment," he said softly, the pain in his voice raw.

‎"It's supposed to be… you, Ethan," she cried, her voice breaking. "You're the man I wanted to marry… but it's impossible. The wedding… it's tomorrow…"

‎Ethan's own throat tightened. He swallowed the lump in his chest, holding back the tears threatening to spill. "Tomorrow… you'll have to let go of us," he said, voice trembling. "Forget me, Katelyn… for your own sake, and for mine. I don't want you to suffer."

‎Her sobs tore through the night, echoed by the wind across the city. "Why? Why must it be this way?!" she screamed repeatedly, a raw, desperate cry that even the glittering celebration below couldn't silence.

‎Ethan's fists clenched at his sides. He wanted to be there, to hold her, to defy the cruel traditions that separated them. Yet he could only watch, keeping his own tears back, letting her grief pour out into the night while he carried the unbearable weight of knowing their love could not be.

‎They were separated by distance, by duty, by fate—but their hearts beat in anguish together, reaching across the rooftop and balcony. The city below glowed with joy, but above, two souls ached, trapped in a sorrow that no celebration could ever erase.

The Forest of Adaba finally gave way beneath them as Helmond slept soundly on Leo's back. The team pressed forward, eyes fixed on Prince Keane's carriage, which was nearly at the edge of the forest, slipping toward the open road.

‎Rein pushed herself beyond her limits. Clouds of wind, waves of water, and bursts of elemental energy carried Leo, Helmond, and Alice forward as she propelled them through the dense trees. The carriage surged ahead, but her determination was unstoppable. Mile after mile, she chased it down with relentless precision.

‎Finally, the forest opened, and the carriage broke free—but so did Rein's team. The distance was closing faster than anyone could expect. Leo's heart pounded as he realized the strain on Rein. Every gust of wind, every wave, every push of energy was taking its toll.

‎Then it happened. Rein's body finally gave out. She collapsed mid-flight, her exhaustion evident as she fainted, leaving Alice to catch her in the air. Leo didn't hesitate. He glanced at Alice, urgency flashing in his eyes. "Keep her safe!" he commanded before leaping toward the carriage with all his might.

‎The moment he reached it, Leo seized Prince Keane and threw him from the vehicle in one smooth, precise motion. The guards reacted instantly, but Leo was already moving. "Your Prince is not your real prince!" he shouted, voice echoing through the trees. "He's being controlled by some unknown force!"

‎The guards lunged, but Leo met them head-on. Every strike was precise, every movement unstoppable. They tried to overwhelm him, but he blocked and countered effortlessly, a calm fury radiating from him as he held the real danger in his hands.

‎For a brief moment, the forest was silent except for the sound of leaves rustling and the wind settling—a fleeting pause before the storm of confrontation that had been following them finally reached its climax.

‎Leo charged forward, eyes locked on Prince Keane, sword already glowing with the forged light of his Ethereal Rapier. Every strike he unleashed was precise, yet Keane dodged with unnerving speed—his movements almost as fluid as Helmond's, but slightly faster, keeping them on edge.

‎Helmond stirred, weak but determined, finally opening his eyes to see Keane, and the looming shadow behind him—Zagan. A primal roar escaped him as he launched himself forward, aiming to strike first, to merge and finish the battle. But Zagan moved like liquid darkness, twisting and dodging with impossible reflexes, keeping them from ever connecting.

‎Leo pressed the attack, slashing relentlessly, forcing Keane to step back. Helmond jumped again, but Zagan's presence made the strike futile—he couldn't land a hit. The shadowy entity was alive, cunning, and untouchable.

‎Then the inevitable happened. Keane could no longer hide the truth—Zagan revealed himself. Darkness erupted, covering Keane's body in a writhing, tentacled shadow. The air grew thick with an oppressive weight, and the ground trembled beneath their feet. Tentacles lashed outward, slicing toward Leo and Helmond with lightning speed.

‎Leo leapt backward, barely avoiding a strike, and summoned a new attack. His sword blazed with radiance as he unleashed the Luminous Slash Piercer, cutting through one of Zagan's writhing tentacles. But the shadow retaliated instantly—a massive, jagged claw swiped at Leo with destructive force. He parried with his Ethereal Rapier, sparks of light and darkness exploding at the point of contact.

‎The clash escalated. Each strike between Leo's light and Zagan's shadow ripped through the forest, sending shockwaves that flattened nearby trees, shattered rocks, and sent everyone staggering just to hold their footing. Helmond tried to join the fight, lunging toward the dark form, but the force of Zagan's power slammed him back violently, leaving him stunned and struggling to regain his footing.

‎Even from afar, Alice gripped the branches of a giant tree, holding the unconscious Rein tight. The sheer destructive force of the clash rattled the entire forest. Waves of energy tore through the air, and she could feel the violent pull of the battlefield's power threatening to rip them from their precarious perch.

‎The battle had become more than just a fight—it was a storm of light and darkness, of willpower against raw chaos, and Leo and Helmond were standing at the center of a maelstrom that could easily consume them.
