Chapter 19 - The Eve of Conjunction

The eve of the Conjunction dawned cold and clear.

Seraphina stood on the highest terrace of the Citadel, watching the stars begin their final alignment. In the sky above, the constellations were shifting, moving into positions they hadn't occupied in three hundred years. And somewhere beyond the veil, the Voidwalkers were waiting.

The Citadel had been preparing for this moment for months. The Dragon Lords were assembled, their mounts ready for battle. The Queen stood at the center of it all, her black dragon coiled beside her, directing preparations with calm efficiency.

But Seraphina felt oddly calm herself. The fear that had plagued her for months had settled into something quieter—a determination, a certainty that whatever happened, she would face it with everything she had.

Kestrel found her there as the sun began to set.

"You should be resting," he said, coming to stand beside her. "Tomorrow will be... difficult."

"I can't sleep." Seraphina continued to watch the sky. "Every time I close my eyes, I see them. The Voidwalkers. The darkness where their faces should be."

"That's normal. Every Dragonbound I've trained has felt the same before a Conjunction." Kestrel was quiet for a moment. "I wanted to tell you... I'm proud of you."

Seraphina turned to look at him, surprised. "Proud?"

"You've come further in six months than most do in a lifetime. You've faced assassins, traitors, Voidwalkers, and you're still standing." He smiled faintly. "I wasn't sure when I first found you in that river. I thought perhaps the Binding had made a mistake. But I was wrong."

"What changed your mind?"

"You did. Every time you fell, you got back up. Every time you failed, you tried again. Every time you were afraid, you pushed forward anyway." Kestrel's golden eyes met hers. "That's what makes a Dragonbound, Seraphina. Not power, not destiny. Just the refusal to give up."

Seraphina felt tears prick at her eyes—she blinked them back, refusing to show weakness. "Thank you. For everything. For finding me, for training me, for believing in me."

"Thank yourself. You did the hard work. I just pointed you in the right direction." He turned to leave. "Get some rest if you can. Tomorrow, we face the end of the world—or its salvation."

He was gone before she could respond, leaving her alone with her thoughts and the slowly aligning stars.

Pyre landed on the terrace a few minutes later, her massive form casting a shadow in the fading light. Through the bond, Seraphina could feel the dragon's emotions—anticipation, determination, and something that might have been fear.

Are you ready? Pyre asked.

I think so. Seraphina moved to stand beside the dragon, resting her hand on Pyre's warm scales. Are you?

I have lived for five hundred years, little flame. I have seen empires rise and fall, watched generations of humans and dragons come and go. But I have never been more ready for anything than I am for this.

Why?

Because I chose you. Pyre's consciousness wrapped around Seraphina's, warm and certain. In all those centuries, I never found a rider I wanted to bond with. But the moment I saw you, standing in that river with a basket of dead fish, glaring at the Ashwing like you might actually fight it... I knew you were the one.

You saw that?

We all saw it. The Ashwing, the other dragons, me. We could feel the fire in you, the potential. And when you took Kestrel's hand without hesitation, when you left everything you knew to follow a stranger into an uncertain future... I knew you would be worth waiting for.

Seraphina felt tears threatening again, and this time she let them fall. I'm scared, Pyre. I'm terrified. What if we fail? What if the merger doesn't work, and we both die, and the world ends because I wasn't strong enough?

Then we die trying. Pyre's voice was gentle. And maybe that's enough. Maybe what matters isn't whether we succeed, but whether we give everything we have in the attempt.

And if it's not enough?

Then at least we'll be together. At the end, in the darkness, we'll face it as one. Pyre lowered her head until her snout rested against Seraphina's chest. That's what the bond means, little flame. Not just power, not just purpose. But companionship. Love. The knowledge that whatever comes, you never have to face it alone.

Seraphina wrapped her arms around the dragon's snout, burying her face in the warm scales. I love you too, she whispered through the bond. Whatever happens tomorrow... I'm glad you chose me.

They stayed like that as the stars wheeled overhead, as the Conjunction approached, as the fate of the world hung in the balance. Two beings, bound by something stronger than blood or magic, preparing to face whatever came together.

And when dawn finally broke, when the stars aligned and the barrier began to tremble, they were ready.
