Chapter 27 - The Attention He Doesn’t Seek

Morning came to Beacon Hills—

But the calm?

It didn't last.

Beacon Hills High buzzed louder than usual.

Not normal gossip.

Not typical teenage noise.

Something had shifted.

And everyone felt it—

Even if they didn't understand why.

Aiden walked through the front entrance.

Calm.

Unbothered.

Like nothing had changed.

But everything had.

Eyes turned.

Whispers followed.

Subtle.

But constant.

"That's him…"

"I heard he—"

"No way, seriously?"

Aiden ignored all of it.

Like it didn't exist.

Because to him—

It didn't matter.

But not everyone could ignore him.

Near the lockers—

Scott McCall leaned against the wall, arms crossed.

Tired.

Frustrated.

Thinking.

Stiles Stilinski stood beside him, watching Aiden walk in.

"Okay, I'm just saying," Stiles muttered, "that is not a normal amount of attention for a guy who literally does nothing."

Scott exhaled.

"He doesn't do nothing."

Stiles pointed subtly.

"Yeah? Then why does it feel like he's running the school without even trying?"

Scott didn't answer.

Because that part—

Was true.

Across the hallway—

Allison Argent saw him the moment he entered.

Of course she did.

Her body reacted before her mind could.

A slight shift.

A step forward.

Then she stopped herself.

Just barely.

But her eyes—

Never left him.

"You're staring again."

Allison blinked.

Lydia Martin stood beside her.

Perfectly composed.

Perfectly aware.

"I'm not," Allison said quickly.

Lydia didn't even look at her.

"Mm."

A pause.

"Do you want to try that again… or should I just say his name for you?"

Allison exhaled softly.

"…Aiden."

And just like that—

It felt heavier.

Real.

Lydia's gaze finally shifted.

Not to Allison—

To him.

Walking.

Calm.

Unreachable.

"Interesting," Lydia murmured.

Because this time—

She wasn't just observing.

She was considering.

Aiden reached his locker.

Opened it.

Routine.

Simple.

But the moment didn't stay simple.

"You've been busy."

Aiden didn't turn immediately.

Because he already knew.

"Depends on what you're referring to," he said calmly.

Lydia stepped closer.

Close enough to break normal distance.

Not enough to be obvious.

"Controlling Betas."

A pause.

"Grabbing Alphas."

Another step.

"And somehow becoming the center of attention without trying."

Now—

Aiden turned.

Their eyes met.

This wasn't like Allison.

Not soft.

Not drawn.

Sharp.

Measured.

Equal in a different way.

"And that bothers you?" Aiden asked.

Lydia tilted her head slightly.

A faint smile forming.

"No."

A pause.

"It interests me."

Silence.

Because that—

Was different.

Aiden studied her for a moment.

Then—

"Careful," he said quietly.

Lydia stepped closer.

Now just inside his space.

"I don't do careful."

The tension shifted.

Not emotional.

Not soft.

Intellectual.

Dangerous.

Behind them—

Allison had been watching.

And she didn't like this.

Not the way Lydia stood close.

Not the way Aiden didn't move away.

Something unfamiliar tightened in her chest.

Jealousy.

She stepped forward.

"Aiden."

Both of them looked at her.

The moment broke—

But not completely.

Allison stopped beside him.

Closer than Lydia.

More natural.

"We need to talk," she said.

Aiden didn't hesitate.

"Then talk."

Lydia watched the shift.

Closely.

Because that positioning—

That instinctive closeness—

Wasn't accidental.

And now—

She understood something important.

Allison wasn't just drawn to him.

She was already inside his space.

Lydia smiled faintly.

This just got interesting.

"I'll let you two catch up," Lydia said smoothly.

But before she walked away—

She leaned slightly closer to Aiden.

Close enough that only he heard—

"Don't get boring."

Then she left.

Aiden watched her go for a second.

Then—

His attention returned.

To Allison.

"Talk," he repeated.

Allison exhaled slowly.

Trying to stay focused.

"Last night… that symbol… that man…"

She hesitated.

"This is getting bigger, isn't it?"

Aiden stepped slightly closer.

Lowering his voice.

"Yes."

Her breath caught.

"And you're still here," he added.

Allison didn't look away.

"Yeah."

A pause.

"Because I trust you."

That—

Was new.

Not attraction.

Not curiosity.

Trust.

Aiden held her gaze.

For a moment—

He didn't respond.

Then—

"Don't fall behind," he said quietly.

Her lips curved faintly.

"Then don't move too fast."

Aiden almost smirked.

Behind them—

Scott approached slowly.

"I feel like I'm interrupting something again," he muttered.

"You are," Aiden replied.

Scott sighed.

"Cool. Great. Love that for me."

He looked between them.

Then at Aiden.

"We need to talk about tonight."

Aiden nodded once.

"I know."

Scott frowned.

"That's it? No dramatic warning? No cryptic line?"

Aiden closed his locker.

"Be ready."

Scott blinked.

"…Okay yeah, that's worse."

Aiden walked past him.

Calm.

Unstoppable.

And once again—

The hallway shifted around him.

Not because he demanded attention.

But because he didn't need to.

And that—

Made it impossible to ignore him.
