Chapter 2 - The Second Unit

In the light cool air of the morning, Oliver Miki once again passed through the gate of Kakeru Senior High School. His black blazer, blue shirt, green pants, and red tie were all worn neatly as usual. Beside him, the ghost floated silently, invisible to everyone else.

Entering the classroom, Oliver went straight to the last bench. Since it was by the window, he could clearly see the playground outside. The class was not fully filled yet.

Resting his hand on the desk, Oliver looked outside and said—

Miki: Time passes so slowly.

The ghost tilted its head beside him.

Bhoot: What?

From the front row, Yuki turned around.

Yuki: Who are you talking to?

Oliver answered with a completely calm expression.

Miki: A ghost.

Yuki stared at him for a few seconds.

Yuki: Are you joking?

Miki: No.

Just then, the classroom door opened and Maria entered, holding a notebook. She looked at Oliver for a moment, then came closer.

Maria: Can I sit with you today?

Oliver looked at the seat beside him and nodded.

Miki: Yes, sit.

Maria sat beside him and took out her books from her bag. The ghost floated a little farther away and quietly observed.

Bhoot: Interesting...

Oliver spoke in a low voice—

Miki: Quiet.

Maria looked at him.

Maria: Did you say something?

Miki: No.

At that moment, the teacher entered the classroom.

Teacher: Everyone open your books. We are starting today's lesson.

The classroom became quiet. Everyone opened their books while the teacher began writing on the board.

Oliver opened his book, but the hidden device inside his blazer gave a light vibration. He subtly placed a hand into his pocket.

The ghost spoke softly—

Bhoot: Foundation?

Miki: I'll check later.

From beside him, Maria was watching Oliver. She could tell—Oliver spoke very little, but observed everything.

Suddenly the teacher asked—

Teacher: Oliver, answer this part.

Oliver glanced at the book once and replied—

Miki: Third line of the second paragraph, sir.

The teacher looked slightly impressed.

Teacher: Correct.

Several students turned to look at him.

Yuki: He's smart too.

The ghost laughed quietly.

Bhoot: Not just tall.

Without raising his eyes, Oliver said—

Miki: Quiet.

After some time, the bell rang 🔔. Tiffin time began.

Everyone took out their lunch boxes.

Oliver opened his own lunch box: rice, egg, and vegetables.

The ghost came closer and looked.

Bhoot: Today's menu is acceptable.

Miki: I don't need your review.

Maria opened her lunch box and asked—

Maria: Why are you always so quiet?

Oliver stayed silent for a few seconds.

Miki: Habit.

Maria: Everyone thinks you're serious.

Miki: Maybe.

The ghost whispered—

Bhoot: Actually awkward.

Miki: Quiet.

Maria looked again.

Maria: What did you say again?

Miki: Nothing.

Just then, two senior students were peeking through the window from the corridor. They had not forgotten yesterday's ghost incident.

One whispered—

Senior: There's no ghost today, right?

The ghost slowly floated near the window and became visible for a few seconds 👻

The two seniors stepped back in fear.

Bhoot: Now there is.

Oliver continued eating.

Maria looked outside and asked—

Maria: What happened outside?

Miki: Nothing.

The bell rang again. Before the next class started, Oliver took out his hidden device and checked the message.

The screen showed—

"Maintain cover. Observe unusual activity inside school."

He switched off the device and put it back into his pocket.

The ghost floated closer.

Bhoot: That means something is inside the school.

Oliver kept looking outside the window.

Miki: I'm thinking the same. 📚👻

---

After school, Oliver Miki returned home. As soon as he opened the door and entered, he noticed an unusual silence inside the house. He placed his bag beside the sofa and removed his black blazer, leaving it on a chair.

Then he looked toward the dining table—and stopped.

The ghost was sitting comfortably there. In front of it was a plate full of sweets.

The ghost was carefully eating one sweet.

Miki: Where did you get those sweets?

The ghost slowly raised its head.

Bhoot: From the box on top of the fridge.

Oliver quickly walked to the table.

Miki: I hid that there.

Bhoot: Ghost detection level high.

Miki: How do you find hidden things so easily?

Bhoot: Experience.

Oliver looked at the plate and saw that more than half of the sweets were already gone.

Miki: How many did you eat?

Bhoot: Exact count unknown.

Miki: The plate is almost empty.

Bhoot: The quality was good.

Oliver pulled a chair and sat down.

Miki: People want peace after returning from school.

Bhoot: I am creating a peaceful environment.

Miki: This is not peaceful. This is sweet robbery.

The ghost smiled lightly.

Bhoot: Maria sat beside you today.

Miki: That was normal class matter.

Bhoot: You looked at her for two extra seconds.

Miki: Stop analyzing.

Bhoot: Yuki was confused too.

Miki: Because I said I talk to ghosts.

The ghost picked up another sweet.

Bhoot: Truthful answers are dangerous.

Just then, a light sound came from the kitchen.

Tok.

Oliver stopped.

Miki: What now?

Bhoot: Not me.

A glass moved slightly.

Oliver slowly walked toward the kitchen. When he opened the cupboard, a small cat jumped out.

Miki: ...A cat?

Bhoot: Mystery solved.

The cat moved under the table.

Oliver bent down and looked.

Miki: Were you moving the glass?

The cat meowed.

Bhoot: Innocent face, criminal action.

Oliver brought a bowl of water. The cat began drinking.

At that moment, the hidden device inside Oliver's pocket vibrated again.

He took it out.

The screen displayed—

"Field observation continues. Maintain cover."

The ghost floated closer.

Bhoot: Foundation is active again.

Oliver turned off the screen.

Miki: That means no peace tomorrow either.

The ghost reached for the last sweet on the plate.

Bhoot: This is the last piece.

Oliver quickly pulled the plate away.

Miki: That one is mine.

Bhoot: Unfair.

At last, Oliver kept the sweet for himself, while the cat sat under the table watching both of them
