Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 – The Day She Didn’t Come

Morning arrived like any other day.

Soft light.

Gentle wind.

A quiet sky.

Nothing in the world looked different.

But something felt wrong.

Arlen noticed it the moment he woke up.

There was no reason.

No clear thought.

Just a feeling sitting quietly in his chest.

Unsettling.

Heavy.

As if something important was missing…

before the day had even begun.

He ignored it.

At least, he tried to.

Because there was only one thing in his mind.

Mira.

He got ready quickly and left without delay.

His steps were faster than usual.

Not rushed.

But not calm either.

As if his body already knew something his mind refused to accept.

The forest felt quieter that day.

The birds weren't as loud.

The wind felt colder.

Even the path he walked every day seemed… unfamiliar.

But he didn't stop.

He kept walking.

Because she would be there.

She was always there.

At the stream.

Waiting.

Smiling softly.

Looking at him like he belonged.

That thought pushed him forward.

Again and again.

Until finally—

he reached the stream.

And stopped.

Mira wasn't there.

He stood still for a moment.

Not reacting.

Not thinking.

Just… waiting.

"She might be late," he whispered to himself.

It wasn't unusual.

It could happen.

So he sat down on the stone.

The same place.

The same position.

His eyes fixed on the path she always came from.

Time passed.

Slowly.

Quietly.

The wind moved.

The water flowed.

But she didn't come.

Arlen shifted slightly.

His fingers tightened against his palm.

"…She's just busy today."

Another reason.

Another excuse.

Something to keep the feeling away.

Minutes turned into more time.

More waiting.

More silence.

He stood up.

Walked a few steps.

Then came back.

Sat again.

Stood again.

His breathing became uneven.

Not fast.

But not steady either.

The kind of breathing that comes when your mind starts losing control.

"…Mira."

He said her name quietly.

As if saying it would make her appear.

But the only response was silence.

The same place that once felt full of her presence…

now felt empty.

Too empty.

The space beside him felt cold.

Unfamiliar.

Wrong.

Hours passed.

The sun moved higher.

Then began to fall again.

But she didn't come.

Not once.

Not even for a moment.

Arlen stood there, staring at the path.

Waiting for a figure that never appeared.

And slowly—

that quiet feeling in his chest began to grow.

Fear.

Not loud.

Not sudden.

But deep.

The kind that creeps in slowly until it takes everything.

He clenched his fist.

"…Something is wrong."

This time—

he couldn't ignore it.

He looked toward the village.

His decision came instantly.

He started walking.

Fast.

No hesitation.

No second thought.

The distance that once felt normal—

now felt too long.

Too slow.

Every step felt like it wasn't enough.

By the time he reached the edge of the village—

his heart was beating harder.

Not from running.

But from something deeper.

Something he didn't want to face.

The village looked normal.

People moved.

Voices echoed.

Life continued.

As if nothing had happened.

And that—

felt even worse.

Arlen looked around.

Searching.

Hoping to see her somewhere.

Anywhere.

But she wasn't there.

He stepped further inside.

His eyes scanning every face.

Every corner.

Every path.

Nothing.

No sign of her.

He stopped a villager.

"…Mira."

The name came out quickly.

"Where is she?"

The villager looked at him.

Confused.

"She hasn't been outside today."

Arlen's chest tightened.

"…Why?"

"I don't know. Maybe she's unwell."

Unwell.

That word stayed in his mind.

But it didn't feel right.

Not enough.

Not complete.

He nodded slightly and walked away.

But his steps didn't slow.

They became faster.

More urgent.

As if something inside him was screaming now.

He reached her house.

And stopped.

For a moment—

he couldn't move.

Because this…

this was the moment.

The moment where everything could change.

He raised his hand.

Hesitated.

Then knocked.

Once.

Twice.

No answer.

The silence felt heavier than anything before.

He knocked again.

Harder.

"…Mira?"

His voice wasn't calm anymore.

It carried something else now.

Fear.

Real fear.

The door didn't open.

Nothing moved.

Nothing answered.

The world around him continued.

But in that moment—

everything inside him began to fall apart.

Because for the first time—

she wasn't there.

Not at the stream.

Not in the village.

Not answering him.

Not anywhere he could reach.

And that absence…

felt louder than anything.

He stepped back slowly.

His mind racing.

His heart unsteady.

That quiet fear from the morning—

had now become something real.

Something unavoidable.

Something that refused to leave.

"…Where are you?"

The question left his lips softly.

But there was no answer.

Only silence.

Cold.

Empty.

Endless.

And somewhere—

far from where he stood—

hidden in darkness—

a chain tightened.

A plan moved forward.

And a love that had just begun to bloom…

was already being pulled toward pain.

Sometimes…

the worst moments don't begin with screams.

They begin with silence.

The kind that answers nothing.

The kind that takes everything.
