The rest of the day passed slower than usual for Rusof Noir.
Classes ended, students left, and the sun slowly disappeared behind the mountains surrounding Elaridge. The golden sky turned crimson, then purple, and finally dark.
Night.
The hour when the hidden world awakened.
Rusof stood on the rooftop of Elaridge High School, looking down at the quiet parking lot below.
The wind moved through his dark hair as his sharp crimson eyes scanned the streets.
Something felt wrong.
Very wrong.
The warning he had felt earlier in the classroom still lingered in his chest like a shadow.
A predator's instinct.
And vampires trusted their instincts more than anything.
Behind him, footsteps approached.
Lena Voss leaned against the rooftop railing.
"Still brooding?" she asked.
Rusof didn't look at her.
"You feel it too," he said calmly.
Lena's playful expression faded.
"Yeah."
She crossed her arms.
"Hunters."
The word hung heavily in the air.
Rusof's eyes darkened.
"They shouldn't be here."
"Well," Lena replied quietly, "someone invited them."
Rusof finally turned toward her.
"Or they're hunting something."
Lena studied him carefully.
"Or someone."
For a brief moment, Rusof thought of Ashra.
Her strange heartbeat.
Her unusual presence.
But that was impossible.
Hunters didn't come for ordinary humans.
And yet...
His instincts refused to calm down.
Across town, Ashra Heil walked down the quiet sidewalk toward her house.
Streetlights flickered softly above her as the cool night air brushed against her skin.
Elaridge felt peaceful at night.
Almost too peaceful.
Ashra held her school bag tightly as she walked.
Her mind replayed the events of the day.
Mostly one thing.
Rusof Noir.
His quiet voice.
His mysterious eyes.
And the strange feeling she had whenever he looked at her.
It felt like he could see through everything.
Through lies.
Through secrets.
Through her.
Ashra shook her head slightly.
"Why am I thinking about him so much..." she murmured to herself.
Then suddenly— A noise.
Footsteps behind her.
Ashra stopped walking.
The footsteps stopped too.
Her heart began to beat faster.
**Thump**
**Thump**
**Thump**
Slowly, she turned around.
The street behind her was empty.
But the shadows felt... wrong.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
"Well, well."
A tall man stepped out from behind a tree.
He wore a dark coat, and in his hand was something metallic.
A blade.
But not an ordinary blade.
Silver.
Ashra's breath caught.
"Who are you?"
The man smiled coldly.
"Just someone looking for monsters."
Ashra took a step back.
"I think you have the wrong person."
The man tilted his head.
"Maybe."
Then his eyes scanned her carefully.
"Or maybe you're exactly what I'm looking for."
Ashra's heartbeat raced.
The man slowly raised the silver blade.
"Let's find out."
At that exact moment— Rusof froze on the school rooftop.
Ashra's heartbeat.
He could hear it.
Even from this far away.
Fast.
Panicked.
In danger.
His eyes widened.
Lena noticed immediately.
"What is it?"
Rusof turned toward the forest road leading away from town.
"Ashra."
Lena blinked.
"The human girl?"
Rusof was already moving.
Within a second, he vanished from the rooftop.
Running.
Faster than any human could ever see.
Ashra continued stepping backward slowly.
The hunter moved closer.
His silver blade reflected the streetlight.
"You know," he said calmly, "vampires hide well these days."
Ashra frowned.
"I'm not a vampire."
He laughed softly.
"Maybe not."
Then suddenly his expression became cold.
"But they always protect something."
In a flash, he lunged forward.
The silver blade aimed straight for Ashra's heart.
Ashra gasped—
But before the blade could strike—
A blur of black slammed into the hunter.
The attacker flew backward and crashed into a parked car.
Metal bent from the impact.
Ashra stared in shock.
Rusof Noir stood between her and the hunter.
His body was tense.
His expression dark.
Ashra's voice trembled.
"Rusof...?"
He didn't turn around.
"Run."
Ashra blinked.
"What?"
"Run."
The hunter slowly stood up from the wrecked car.
Blood ran from his lip, but he was smiling.
"There you are," he said.
Rusof's eyes glowed faintly red.
"Leave."
The hunter wiped the blood away.
"I was hoping it would be a Noir."
Rusof's voice became colder.
"Last warning."
The hunter lifted the silver blade again.
"Perfect."
And then he attacked.
The fight exploded instantly.
Rusof moved faster than human eyes could follow.
The hunter swung the silver blade, but Rusof dodged easily and struck him across the street.
The hunter crashed into the pavement.
Ashra stood frozen.
Her mind struggled to understand what she was seeing.
Rusof wasn't moving like a human.
Not even close.
The hunter laughed even while injured.
"So the rumors are true."
Rusof stepped forward slowly.
"You shouldn't have come here."
The hunter lifted his blade again.
"Actually," he replied calmly, "this is exactly where I should be."
Then he glanced at Ashra.
"Especially with her here."
Rusof's expression darkened dangerously.
"Don't look at her."
The hunter smiled.
"Oh?"
Then he rushed forward again.
This time the silver blade cut across Rusof's arm.
Smoke rose from the wound.
Ashra gasped.
"Rusof!"
The hunter laughed.
"Silver hurts, doesn't it?"
Rusof slowly looked down at the wound.
Then back at the hunter.
And something inside him snapped.
When he raised his head again—
His eyes were no longer human.
They were completely crimson.
His fangs extended slowly.
Ashra froze.
Her voice barely came out.
"Rusof... w-... what... are you...?"
The hunter grinned.
"Finally."
Rusof moved.
Faster than lightning.
In a single movement he grabbed the hunter's throat and slammed him into the ground.
The pavement cracked.
His voice was no longer calm.
It was dark.
Ancient.
"You came to the wrong town."
The hunter struggled, but Rusof's strength was overwhelming.
Finally the hunter laughed again.
"You're protecting her like she matters."
Rusof's grip tightened.
"She does."
The hunter's eyes sparkled with amusement.
"Interesting."
Then suddenly— He pressed a button on his wrist.
A bright flash of light exploded.
Rusof stepped back instinctively.
When the light faded— The hunter was gone.
Only the silver blade remained on the ground.
Silence filled the street.
Rusof's breathing slowly calmed.
Then he remembered something.
Ashra.
He turned around.
And froze.
Ashra was standing only a few steps away.
Her wide eyes stared at him.
At his fangs.
At the blood on his lips.
Her voice trembled.
"You're a vampire."
Rusof said nothing.
For the first time in centuries—
He didn't know what to say.
Ashra stepped closer slowly.
Fear flickered in her eyes.
But something else was there too.
Curiosity.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
"Were you going to tell me?"
Rusof wiped the blood from his lips slowly.
The crimson glow in his eyes faded slightly.
But the truth could no longer be hidden.
And Ashra had seen everything.
Rusof finally spoke quietly.
"You were never supposed to find out."
Ashra's heart beat faster.
But she didn't run.
She only stared at him.
And somewhere deep in the darkness of the forest — The hunter watched them through binoculars.
He spoke quietly into his radio.
"Confirmed."
A voice answered.
"Target?"
The hunter smiled.
"Both of them."
Then he added softly — "And the girl... is far more interesting than we expected."
