Chapter 24 - Chapter 25: The Girl Who Learned to See Everything

The room had no windows.

No sense of time.

No sense of outside.

Maya sat on the edge of the narrow bed, her fingers resting lightly on her knees, her posture still—but her mind anything but.

It had been… days.

Or maybe weeks.

She couldn't tell anymore.

In this place, time didn't move normally.

It stretched.

Collapsed.

Disappeared.

All that remained was routine.

Testing.

Observation.

Silence.

"Stand."

The command came from the speaker above.

Cold.

Emotionless.

Maya slowly stood up.

Her body still felt weak, but not like before.

Not fragile.

Not powerless.

Something had changed.

The door slid open.

Two guards entered.

"Follow."

She obeyed.

Not because she wanted to—

But because she had learned something important.

Resisting didn't help.

It only made things worse.

They led her into another room.

Larger this time.

Glass walls.

People watching.

Always watching.

At the center—

Another chair.

But this time—

No restraints.

Maya stopped.

"I'm not sitting unless you tell me what this is," she said calmly.

There was a pause.

Then—

The man in black stepped forward.

"You're improving," he said.

Maya didn't respond.

"Good," he continued. "That means we can proceed."

Her jaw tightened.

"Proceed with what?"

He gestured toward the chair.

"Your evolution."

Maya stared at him.

"I'm not your project."

His expression didn't change.

"No," he said quietly. "You're something far more valuable."

She felt a chill.

"I'm not helping you."

"You already are."

Silence.

Then—

"Sit."

Maya hesitated.

Then slowly—

She sat.

The moment she did—

The lights dimmed slightly.

A low hum filled the air.

Her heart began to beat faster.

"What are you doing?" she asked.

No answer.

Instead—

A screen lit up in front of her.

Faces appeared.

One by one.

Different people.

Different expressions.

Different lives.

"Touch the screen," the man instructed.

Maya frowned.

"What?"

"Touch it."

She hesitated.

Then slowly raised her hand—

And placed her fingers against the glass.

The world shattered.

Again.

But this time—

It was different.

Clearer.

Sharper.

Controlled.

She saw the first person's memory.

A woman.

Laughing.

Then crying.

Then hiding something.

A secret.

Maya blinked—

And the vision ended.

Her breathing stayed steady.

She wasn't overwhelmed.

She wasn't drowning.

She was…

Fine.

"Again," the man said.

Another face.

Another touch.

Another vision.

This time—

A man.

Angry.

Breaking something.

Regret.

Maya pulled back.

Her heart beat faster—

But she didn't lose control.

She didn't panic.

She didn't scream.

She was learning.

The man observed carefully.

"Interesting," he murmured.

Maya looked at her hands.

"They're… quieter," she whispered.

"Because you're adapting," he replied.

Her eyes narrowed.

"You did something to me."

"We helped you," he corrected.

"No," she said firmly. "You changed me."

Silence.

Then—

"Yes."

The honesty shocked her.

Maya stood up suddenly.

"I don't want this."

The man stepped closer.

"That doesn't matter anymore."

Her chest tightened.

"You don't get to decide that."

He stopped in front of her.

Calm.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

"We already did."

For a moment—

They just stared at each other.

Then—

Maya said something she didn't expect herself to say.

"If I'm so valuable…"

His eyes flickered slightly.

"…then you need me."

Silence.

A shift.

Subtle.

But real.

"You're starting to understand," he said.

Maya's heart pounded.

"And if you need me…"

She took a step closer.

"…then I have power too."

For the first time—

The man smiled.

Not amused.

Not mocking.

But impressed.

"Good," he said softly.

"Very good."
