Chapter 3 - Chapter 3-Unavoidable.

The air changed.

It wasn't just in Maya's head this time.

It actually changed. Every single person in that space felt it.

Gasps rippled through the crowd like a sudden wave, spreading faster than she could process. Every pair of eyes snapped toward them—wide with shock… anticipation… and something that felt dangerously like excitement.

Maya didn't move.

Neither did he.

That face. That same arrogant expression. That same presence that irritated her more than it should.

"You've got to be kidding me," she muttered under her breath.

Across from her, Noah Kingston stared down at her, his dark eyes scanning her face like he was confirming something.

And then—

He laughed.

Soft.

Low.

Completely out of place.

"Well," he said, tilting his head slightly, "look who we have here. Looks like fate has a sense of humor."

Maya's irritation spiked instantly.

"Or bad taste," she shot back.

Another wave of gasps.

Louder this time.

"She just talked back…" someone whispered.

"I hate her already.

"Who does she think she is?"

"A lowlife scholarship bitch… the guts, ugh."

Noah's gaze sharpened.

Not angry.

Not yet.

But definitely interested.

"You really don't learn, do you?" he said, taking a slow step closer.

Maya held her ground.

"You really don't quit, do you?" she fired back, eyeing him.

A flicker of amusement crossed his face again.

Dangerous.

Like he was enjoying this far more than he should.

Around them, students had formed a complete circle now, watching like it was some kind of live show. Phones were subtly raised. Whispers flew from one group to another.

Even Brittany, standing a few feet away, looked stunned.

A sudden shove brushed against Maya's shoulder.

"Move."

The voice was sharp. Dismissive.

Maya turned slightly, her eyes landing on the girl from earlier — Brittany.

Her face was heavily made up, her expression full of irritation.

"Excuse me?" Maya said, her tone calm—but edged.

Brittany let out a short, mocking laugh.

"God, they really don't filter who they let in anymore. They just pick up whatever garbage they find on the streets… even dogs," she said, folding her arms. "First day and you're already causing a scene."

Maya raised a brow.

"I didn't realize breathing in your direction counted as causing a scene."

A few students nearby snickered.

Brittany's expression hardened instantly.

"You should watch your mouth," she snapped. "People like you don't last here."

"People like me?" Maya repeated, tilting her head slightly.

Brittany stepped closer, lowering her voice just enough to make it sound more threatening.

"Scholarship students," she said. "You come in thinking you're special, then reality hits. This place isn't for you."

Maya held her gaze.

Unblinking.

Unshaken.

"Funny," she said softly, "because I earned my way here. Can you say the same?"

A collective "ohhh" rippled through the crowd.

Brittany's face flushed.

Before she could respond—

"Enough."

The single word cut through the tension like a blade.

Everything stilled.

Even Brittany stepped back immediately.

Maya didn't need to turn to know who it was.

But she did anyway.

Noah.

Watching.

Not amused.

Not impressed.

Just… observing.

Brittany straightened instantly.

"Noah…" she started carefully, "she's just a—"

"I don't remember calling on you, Brittany."

His voice was calm.

But sharp enough to cut through her words instantly.

Brittany froze.

Everyone gasped again.

"S-sorry, Noah," she said quickly, stepping away like she had just crossed a line she shouldn't have.

Maya caught that.

Every detail of it.

The way her voice changed.

The way the crowd shifted.

The way everyone listened when he spoke.

So this wasn't just influence.

This was control.

Her eyes flickered back to him.

And for the first time—

She understood exactly what kind of person she was dealing with.

Not just arrogant.

Not just rich.

But someone who was used to people bending without question.

And somehow…

That made her even more determined not to.

So this Noah Kingston… wasn't just some random rich jerk.

He was important here.

Figures.

"Listen," Maya said, folding her arms across her chest, "I didn't plan to run into you again, and I definitely don't have time for whatever this is."

Noah's eyes dropped briefly to her arms… then back to her face.

"You bumped into me," he said.

"You were standing in the middle of the road like a statue," she fired back.

A few students actually choked back laughter.

Big mistake.

Noah's jaw tightened—just slightly.

"You're new," he said again, his tone quieter now. "So I'll overlook your attitude."

Maya scoffed.

"Wow. How generous… from Mr. Arrogant."

That did it.

This time, his smile faded.

Not completely.

But enough.

He stepped closer—close enough that she could feel the shift in the air between them.

Close enough that the whispers around them dimmed into the background.

Maya was tall—but in front of him, she felt small.

She barely reached his chest.

He was insanely tall.

"You embarrassed me yesterday," he said, his voice low enough that only she could hear.

Maya didn't flinch.

"You deserved worse."

A pause.

A dangerous one.

Something flickered in his eyes then—something darker. Not just irritation.

Challenge.

"You're either very brave," he murmured, "or very stupid."

Maya's lips curved slightly.

"You're either a jerk or a complete idiot. And whatever you are… I just don't care."

Eyes widened around them.

No one had ever talked back to Noah Kingston.

Not like this.

Silence.

Thick.

Heavy.

Explosive.

Then—

A slow smirk returned to his lips.

But this time, it wasn't amused.

It was decisive.

"Good," he said. "I like challenges."

Maya's stomach twisted slightly—but she refused to show it.

"I'm not here to entertain you."

"No," he replied calmly. "You're here because you earned your way in."

Her eyes flickered—just for a second.

He noticed.

Of course he did.

"And that," he continued, straightening slightly, "makes this even more interesting."

Before she could respond—

A loud bell rang across the school compound.

The tension snapped.

Students immediately began to scatter, though not without throwing one last glance at the scene they had just witnessed.

And most of the girls?

They gave Maya death glares.

She just rolled her eyes.

She stepped back first.

Not in fear.

But because she refused to stand there like she was part of his world.

"I'm not interested in whatever game you're playing," she said firmly.

Noah didn't stop her.

Didn't grab her.

Didn't raise his voice.

He just watched.

That same unreadable look settling on his face again.

"We'll see," he said.

Maya turned.

And walked away.

This time, she didn't look back.

But she could feel it.

His eyes.

Still on her.

Burning into her back like a promise.

From where she stood, Brittany finally let out the breath she had been holding.

"What… just happened?" one of her friends whispered.

Brittany's eyes narrowed as she watched Maya disappear into the building.

Then slowly—

A smile spread across her lips, a mischievous one that makes her evil thoughts obvious

"Oh," she said softly, "this is going to be fun."

Y

She said, her friends looked at her, sharing the same evil smiles that turned to a loud laughter which they couldn't stop as they joined the other students, moving to their classes together.
