Chapter 4 - Chapter 4- Unwelcome, Unbothered.

Maya was the last person to get into the 12th-grade class. Being a new student with already a lot of haters, she had to find her way herself. She didn't have a map either, since the principal wasn't at her desk. By the time Maya arrived, everyone had settled in, and the first teacher of the day was already teaching.

The room buzzed with whispers, laughter, and the occasional shuffling of papers. Maya felt the weight of dozens of eyes on her as she stepped inside. Her heart raced, but she kept her expression neutral, refusing to give anyone the satisfaction of seeing her nervous.

Maya walked in slowly. The teacher looked up and smiled.

"Maya Reed, right?" he asked.

"Yes, sir," Maya replied.

"Oh, welcome! Class, we have a new student—treat her well," the teacher announced.

"She doesn't belong here, so she doesn't deserve special treatment," a student sneered, and the others laughed.

"You should think about your falling boobs instead," Maya said calmly—too calm.

"What?" The girl mumbled

The class erupted in laughter, leaving the girl looked down, flushed with anger, unable to do anything. Maya allowed herself a faint smirk. Some people never learn, she thought.

"That's enough, class," the teacher cautioned. "Look for a seat and join the lesson," he added, referring to Maya.

Maya walked toward an empty chair, but someone plopped a designer backpack on it.

"Ooops, my bag already took this seat," the person said.

Maya looked up,

Brittany.

"Is everyone in this school dumb?" Maya asked under her breath, more to herself than anyone else.

"You can come sit here," a voice offered from another seat.

Maya walked over and sat beside the girl, thinking, At least someone has sense.

"I'm Molly," the girl introduced herself.

"I'm sure I don't need to introduce myself. Everyone in this school knows me, all thanks to that jerk," Maya said, glancing toward Noah, who returned her look.

"Of course, everyone knows the fearless Maya," Molly said sarcastically. "I like you, though."

Maya looked at her silently, then slowly opened her notebook and laptop. This school is incredible… well, apart from the spoiled chickens who call themselves students, she thought.

Just as she was logging in, that annoying squeaky voice piped up.

"Do you even know how to operate that?" Brittany mocked.

"Do you even know how to keep quiet and operate your brain?" Maya shot back.

"What—"

"Brittany, that's enough," the teacher interjected.

"Oh, shut up, old man! I guess you don't love your job anymore," Brittany raged, and the teacher stayed quiet immediately.

In this school, students were like the highest authority, depending on how rich and influential their parents were.

"Brittany, you're disturbing the peace of the class," Molly said calmly.

Brittany fumed but didn't say a word.

"Whoa! Why did she stop talking immediately?" Maya asked, surprised.

"Because I'm Molly Brown. But she'd still talk… just not now," Molly replied simply.

"Ohh," Maya murmured, unsure if she fully understood. She focused on the lesson, and so did everyone else—or at least pretended to.

As the teacher went through the lesson, Maya observed the room carefully. The walls were lined with posters boasting the school's achievements: "Top in the State!" "Chess Club Champions!" "Debate Team Nationals!" Everything screamed prestige and privilege. Maya's eyes flicked over to Brittany, who was clearly trying to intimidate anyone who dared cross her. She'll learn eventually, Maya thought.

Noah caught her gaze briefly again. There was something about him—calm, confident, yet just distant enough to be intriguing. Maya felt her curiosity pique. She made a mental note to figure out why everyone seemed to defer to him.

By mid-class, Maya had already noticed several social cliques forming: the rich elite whispering in corners, the overachievers flipping through textbooks with near-manic energy, and the quiet students who were just trying to survive the day. It reminded her a lot of high school hierarchies she'd read about but never truly experienced… until now.

During a group exercise, Brittany tried to undermine Maya again by loudly questioning her answers.

"That's wrong. You don't even know what you're talking about," Brittany sneered.

Maya didn't react immediately. She watched Brittany, letting her frustration simmer for a moment before responding.

"Wrong? I'd say it's just different from your limited understanding," Maya replied smoothly, her voice calm but sharp.

The class gasped. Even some of Brittany's friends looked impressed—or maybe just surprised. Brittany's face turned a shade of red.

"Okay, that's enough for today," the teacher finally said, clearly aware that the tension had reached a peak.

Maya exhaled quietly. Not bad for a first day, she thought. At least I'm not invisible, and that's a start.

When the bell rang, students scrambled out. Maya packed her things slowly, letting the chaos settle before she moved. Molly walked with her to the door.

"You handled her pretty well," Molly said quietly, nodding toward Brittany, who was already arguing with someone else.

"Thanks. She won't ruin my day," Maya replied. She caught sight of Noah again as he walked past, offering a faint, knowing smile. Maya's lips curved slightly. Interesting… very interesting.

—————

Just as Maya adjusted her bag and stepped into the hallway, before the next class begins she decided to check out her locker, she just got her map and other things from the principal. The noise of students filled the air again—loud, chaotic, alive. Crestwood Academy wasn't just a school… it was a battlefield.

"Maya."

Her name stopped her mid-step.

She turned slowly.

It was him.

Noah.

Leaning casually against the locker, hands tucked into his pockets like he owned the entire building. His gaze locked onto hers, calm but intense—like he'd been watching her longer than she realized.

"You've caused quite a scene for someone who just got here," he said, his voice low, almost amused.

Maya raised a brow. "And you've been watching quite closely for someone who claims not to care."

A faint smirk touched his lips.

"Careful," he said, stepping closer. "This school doesn't play fair.

Maya didn't move. Didn't flinch.

"Good," she replied softly. "Neither do I."

For a brief second, something flickered in his eyes—interest… maybe even excitement.

Then Brittany's voice cut through the moment like a blade.

"This isn't over, Maya."

Maya glanced past Noah, her expression unreadable as Brittany glared at her from across the hall, surrounded by her usual crowd.

A slow, dangerous smile spread across Maya's lips.

"I was hoping it wasn't, because that would be boring."

The tension in the air thickened, almost suffocating.

And just like that…

The war had officially begun.
