Chapter 39 - The Instructor’s Test

Theo's POV

The air felt different.

Not tense—

Measured.

Like everything that happened next was being weighed.

Judged.

The instructor stood across from us.

Not in a combat stance.

Not preparing to attack.

Just watching.

"…Begin," they said.

No signal.

No countdown.

Just that one word.

Kairo didn't wait.

Of course he didn't.

CRACK—

Lightning burst beneath his feet—

And he vanished forward.

Fast.

Too fast for most students to track.

But the instructor—

Didn't move.

Didn't react.

Kairo's strike came from the side—

Sharp.

Precise.

But before it landed—

The instructor shifted.

Just slightly.

Minimal movement.

Maximum effect.

Kairo passed by them completely.

"…Oh," he muttered mid-motion. "That's annoying."

He landed cleanly—

Sliding back.

Not shaken.

Just… recalculating.

"…They're good," he added.

"…Obviously," I replied.

But seeing it—

Was different.

That wasn't speed.

That wasn't power.

That was control.

Absolute control.

"…Again," the instructor said calmly.

Kairo grinned slightly.

"Yeah, alright."

This time—

He didn't rush.

Lightning gathered in his hand—

Condensed.

Sharper.

More focused.

Then—

He moved.

Not straight.

Not predictable.

He disappeared—

Reappeared—

Changed direction mid-step.

Untrackable to most.

But again—

The instructor moved just enough.

Every time.

Not blocking.

Not countering.

Just—

Avoiding.

Perfectly.

Kairo clicked his tongue as he landed again.

"…Okay, that's just unfair."

"…You're being read," I said.

"Yeah," he sighed. "I noticed."

The instructor's gaze shifted.

To me.

"…Your turn."

I stepped forward.

Slowly.

Not rushing.

Not reacting.

Because this wasn't a fight.

This was something else.

I raised my hand.

A magic circle formed instantly.

Clean.

Refined.

Water gathered.

Condensed.

Controlled.

Then—

I launched it.

Water Bomb.

Fast.

Direct.

The instructor didn't move.

The moment it hit—

CRACK—

Ice spread instantly.

Freezing over their arm.

Locking in place.

For a split second—

It worked.

Then—

It broke.

Cleanly.

No effort.

"…Too linear," the instructor said.

My eyes narrowed slightly.

"…I know."

Which meant—

Adjust.

I moved again.

This time—

Closer.

Two circles formed.

Water condensed—

Shaping.

Refining.

Water Daggers.

I stepped in—

Striking fast.

Precise.

The blade cut—

But—

Stopped.

Not because it failed—

Because it was caught.

The instructor held it between two fingers.

The spinning edge—

Contained.

Neutralized.

"…Better," they said.

Then—

They pushed it aside.

Effortlessly.

I stepped back.

Heart steady.

Mind moving.

Fast.

"…They're not fighting us," Kairo muttered.

"…They're analyzing," I replied.

"Yeah," he said. "I hate that."

Same.

But that meant—

One thing.

We needed to change the pattern.

"…Together," I said quietly.

Kairo glanced at me.

Then grinned.

"Finally."

No hesitation.

We moved at the same time.

Lightning surged.

Water flowed.

Different speeds—

Different styles—

But aligned.

Kairo struck first—

Fast.

Direct.

Pulling attention.

I followed—

Not straight.

Not obvious.

Circles formed—

Layered.

Controlled.

Steam Cloud.

The spheres burst—

Heat rising—

Steam spreading instantly.

The field vanished into white.

Gasps echoed.

Vision lost.

Except—

Mine.

Water Vision activated.

Clarity returned.

The instructor stood still.

Unmoving.

But I saw it.

The shift.

The awareness.

They weren't relying on sight.

"…Figures," I muttered.

Kairo moved through the steam—

Lightning flashing faintly.

"…Now?" he called out.

"…Now."

We moved together.

Kairo attacked from the front—

Fast.

Unpredictable.

I circled—

Positioning.

Waiting.

Timing.

The instructor reacted—

To him.

Just as expected.

And in that moment—

I moved.

Fast.

Closing the distance—

Water dagger forming—

Pressure building—

Then—

Strike.

The blade cut—

Close.

Closer than before.

The instructor shifted—

But not enough.

A thin line formed across their sleeve.

Cut.

Clean.

Silence.

The steam faded slowly.

Revealing everything.

The mark.

Small.

But real.

Kairo blinked.

"…Wait—did we just—"

"…Yeah," I said.

The instructor looked at the cut.

Then back at us.

No anger.

No surprise.

Just—

Acknowledgment.

"…Adaptation," they said.

"…Acceptable."

Kairo let out a breath.

"…That's it?"

"…For now."

They turned.

Walking away without another word.

Like the test was over.

Because it was.

The tension broke.

Voices returned.

Louder this time.

More intense.

But I didn't focus on that.

I looked at my hand.

At the control.

At the timing.

Then glanced at Kairo.

"…Not bad."

He smirked.

"Don't sound so surprised."

"…I'm not."

"…You are."

"…A little."

He laughed.

And for a moment—

Everything felt normal again.

But deep down—

I knew.

This wasn't just a test.

It was a beginning.

Because now—

They were watching for real.
