Chapter 58 - Breaking formation

Theo's POV

The balance didn't last.

It never does.

Three fights.

One field.

Controlled chaos—

Until it fractures.

The first shift came from Lyn.

Not retreating.

Not hesitating.

Advancing.

Straight through the steam.

Toward Selene.

Fast.

Too fast for someone that quiet.

His mana shifted.

Compressed—

Then expanded.

A pulse.

Invisible—

But heavy.

Selene reacted instantly.

Stepping back.

Minimal.

Precise.

But the pressure followed.

Tracking.

Her movement slowed—

Just slightly.

Enough.

Kairo noticed.

Of course he did.

"…Oi," he said.

"…pick someone else."

Lightning surged.

Violent.

He broke away from Riven—

Forcing distance.

Riven didn't chase.

Interesting.

He watched instead.

Adjusting.

Learning.

Kairo crossed the field instantly.

Electric arcs snapping around him.

He dropped in—

Between Selene and Lyn.

Intercept.

Impact.

The clash burst outward.

Lightning against pressure.

The air bent.

Selene slipped out.

Regained space.

Control restored.

But now—

Everything shifted.

Again.

Riven moved.

Not toward Kairo.

Not toward Selene.

Toward me.

Of course.

Arielle didn't interfere.

She stepped back.

Watching.

Letting it play out.

Fine.

Water formed instantly.

Daggers ready.

Compressed.

Edges spinning low.

Riven closed distance.

Faster than before.

No wasted motion.

His first strike came—

Heavy.

Direct.

I intercepted.

Redirected.

But—

The angle shifted mid-impact.

He adapted.

Again.

The force slipped through—

Clipped my shoulder.

Not clean.

But not light either.

I stepped back.

One step.

Reset.

He exhaled.

"…there it is."

"…you're changing."

"…so are you."

A short grin.

"…about time."

He moved again.

Faster.

Sharper.

More controlled.

This wasn't brute force anymore.

This was pressure with intent.

Steam formed again.

Instant.

Cover.

But this time—

He didn't rush in.

He waited.

Reading.

Then I changed.

Water didn't form into spheres—

Or blades.

It stretched.

Thin lines.

Threading through the steam.

Irregular.

Unpredictable.

The distortion flickered.

Stronger.

Clearer.

Not slowing time—

Expanding it.

Options.

Paths.

Riven stepped in.

And I moved.

Not from habit.

Not from plan.

From instinct.

Water threads snapped forward.

Different angles.

No pattern.

Riven blocked one.

Slipped past another.

But the third—

Connected.

A shallow cut across his side.

He stopped.

Just briefly.

Then—

A quiet laugh.

"…that's new."

"…it works."

Across the field—

Kairo's voice cut through.

"…yo, you're getting weird now."

"…focus," Selene said.

But her tone—

Changed.

Sharper.

More alert.

Arielle stepped forward again.

Slow.

Measured.

Her eyes locked onto me.

"…you're shifting mid-fight," she said.

"…yes."

"…that's not refinement."

A pause.

"…that's something else."

Silence.

Then everything surged again.

Kairo exploded forward—

Lightning cracking outward.

Riven met him—

Force colliding.

Selene repositioned—

Angles perfect.

Lyn adjusted—

Target shifting.

And me—

I stopped forcing control.

Just for a moment.

And in that moment—

Everything aligned.

Not because I controlled it.

Because I didn't.

The distortion stabilized.

Not flickering—

Present.

Watching.

A message—

Almost forming.

Then—

Gone.

Not yet.

But close.

I moved again.

Not as a strategist.

Not fully.

Not just instinct either.

Something in between.

And that—

Was unpredictable.

Even to me.
