Chapter 57 - Unstable Control

Theo's POV

The room didn't relax.

It watched.

After two fights—

There was no normal.

Only attention.

Focused.

Sharp.

Waiting.

I returned to my position.

Calm.

Controlled.

But inside—

Something wasn't.

That moment.

Against Riven.

It wasn't just reaction.

It wasn't just skill.

It was—

Clear.

Too clear.

Like everything slowed.

Like the outcome—

Already existed.

"…You felt it too, didn't you?"

Selene.

Quiet.

Direct.

I didn't answer immediately.

Because she wasn't guessing.

She was confirming.

"…It was nothing."

A pause.

She didn't look convinced.

"…It wasn't nothing," she said.

"…You moved before he committed."

"…You adjusted before impact."

"…That's not reaction."

"…That's prediction."

Kairo dropped into the seat beside us.

"…Or instinct," he said.

"…You're overthinking it."

Selene glanced at him.

"…You don't think enough."

"…I think enough to win."

"…That's not the same thing."

He smirked.

"…Worked so far."

Selene looked back at me.

Still waiting.

Still analyzing.

"…It doesn't matter," I said.

"…It will."

She turned away.

But I knew—

She wasn't done.

Not even close.

The instructor stepped forward again.

"Next round."

No pause.

No reset.

Just—

Continuation.

"Different format."

The room shifted slightly.

Curiosity.

Interest.

"Three-on-three."

That changed things.

Immediately.

Strategy.

Coordination.

Control.

Kairo stood.

Grinning.

"…Now we're talking."

Selene stood beside him.

Silent.

Already thinking.

I stepped forward.

No words needed.

We were already aligned.

The instructor continued.

"Teams will be assigned."

Of course.

Not choice.

Test.

He pointed.

"Kairo Volten."

"Selene Ardent."

"Theo Vale."

Expected.

Opposite side—

"Arielle Virel."

Pause.

Then—

"Riven Kael."

A shift.

He smiled slightly.

Of course.

"And—Lyn Varis."

A third.

Quiet.

Unnoticed before.

But his mana—

Stable.

Compressed.

Dangerous.

Good.

The room cleared again.

Wider this time.

More space.

More variables.

Better.

We took positions.

Kairo cracked his knuckles.

"…Alright," he said.

"…I'll take the loud one."

"…That's both of them," I replied.

"…Even better."

Selene spoke.

Quiet.

Precise.

"…Don't rush."

Kairo smirked.

"…No promises."

I looked forward.

Arielle.

Riven.

Lyn.

Balanced.

Strong.

Dangerous.

Arielle stepped slightly forward.

Leading.

Of course.

"Begin."

No delay.

Kairo moved instantly.

Lightning surged.

Explosive.

He went straight for Riven.

Direct.

Aggressive.

Expected.

Riven met him head-on.

Force against force.

The clash echoed.

Heavy.

Loud.

Perfect.

That left—

Two.

Arielle moved.

Not toward Kairo.

Toward me.

Of course.

Lyn shifted.

Positioning—

To cut off Selene.

Good.

Everything—

As expected.

Water formed instantly.

Three spheres.

Compressed.

Heating.

Steam Cloud.

Released.

The battlefield blurred.

Divided.

Controlled.

Selene moved.

Disappearing into the mist.

Silent.

Hidden.

Perfect.

Arielle didn't slow.

She stepped into it.

Confident.

Of course.

I moved forward.

Meeting her.

Inside the distortion.

Where vision didn't matter.

Only awareness.

"…You're relying on it again," she said.

"…Yes."

"…Good."

She moved first.

Faster this time.

Sharper.

No testing.

No hesitation.

I responded.

Water daggers formed—

Clash.

Immediate.

Fast.

Precise.

Each strike—

Closer.

More dangerous.

She adapted.

Faster than before.

Reading patterns.

Breaking them.

Good.

That meant—

I needed to break mine.

The distortion flickered again.

Stronger.

Clearer.

Time slowed—

Just slightly.

Enough.

I shifted.

Not based on logic—

But instinct.

Uncalculated.

Different.

Arielle's eyes widened—

Just slightly.

She felt it.

That difference.

Good.

Water surged.

Five circles formed—

All at once.

Water: Boost.

But not forward.

Not direct.

Side angle.

Unexpected.

I moved.

Fast.

Unpredictable.

The attack came from her blind spot—

Not planned—

Chosen.

At the last second.

She reacted—

Barely.

Blocking—

But not cleanly.

The impact pushed her back.

Three steps.

Real movement.

Real disruption.

Behind us—

Kairo laughed.

"…There it is!"

Lightning cracked.

Riven pushed back.

The fight escalated.

Everywhere.

Selene reappeared—

Behind Lyn.

Silent.

Precise.

Strike—

Clean.

He blocked—

But late.

Pressure built.

Three battles.

One field.

Controlled chaos.

Exactly what we needed.

But inside—

That feeling grew.

Stronger.

Unstable.

Like control—

Was slipping.

Or evolving.

I couldn't tell which.

Arielle steadied herself.

Looking at me—

Differently now.

"…That wasn't strategy," she said.

"…No."

"…What was it?"

A pause.

Then—

"…Change."

Silence.

Just for a moment.

Then—

She smiled.

For real this time.

"…Good."

The fight continued.

But something had shifted.

Not just the battle.

Not just the team.

Me.

And that—

Was dangerous.

Because control—

Was no longer absolute.

And for the first time—

I wasn't sure—

If that was a weakness.

Or the beginning—

Of something stronger.
