Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: when Two Become one

The room trembled under the weight of power.

Darkness collided with darkness, twisting the air into something suffocating. The Harbinger's form towered over them now—its presence no longer restrained, no longer hiding.

It had stopped pretending.

And now—

It was serious.

Kai slid back across the cracked floor, his shadows barely holding the creature at bay. His breathing was steady, but the strain was clear in the tension of his stance.

"…It's stronger than the others," he muttered.

Adrian stepped beside him, the last civilian behind him finally freed.

"They're safe."

Kai didn't look away from the enemy.

"Good."

A pause.

"Then don't hold back."

Adrian's chest tightened slightly.

"…You sure about that?"

Kai's voice was calm.

"I trust you."

The words hit harder than expected.

Adrian blinked.

Just for a second.

Then—

He nodded.

"…Alright."

The Harbinger's voice echoed through the room.

"…Two against one…"

It tilted its head slowly.

"…It will not change the outcome…"

Kai's shadows surged again.

"We'll see."

---

The Battle Begins

The Harbinger moved first.

Fast.

Too fast.

It vanished—

Then reappeared directly in front of them.

"Move!" Kai shouted.

They split instantly.

The creature's attack slammed into the ground, shattering the floor beneath them.

Adrian rolled to the side, barely avoiding the impact.

"…Okay, that's not normal speed."

The mark pulsed.

Reacting.

Hungry.

"…Let me help…"

Adrian clenched his teeth.

"Not now."

Kai re-engaged, his shadows forming blades that struck with precision.

The Harbinger blocked easily.

"…Weak…"

Adrian stepped in.

"Try this!"

He raised his arm—

The shadows surged forward—

Controlled.

Sharp.

They struck from the side.

The Harbinger staggered slightly.

"…Better…"

Kai's eyes flickered toward Adrian.

"…Again."

Adrian nodded.

This time—

They moved together.

Kai attacked from the front.

Adrian from the side.

Their shadows collided in rhythm.

Not chaotic.

Not separate.

But—

Connected.

The Harbinger's movements slowed.

Just slightly.

"…What is this…?"

Adrian felt it too.

Something new.

The bond.

It pulsed.

Not like before.

Not unstable.

Not painful.

But—

Aligned.

"…Kai…"

Kai didn't look at him.

"I feel it."

The shadows around them began to shift.

Not just theirs.

But shared.

Adrian's breath caught.

"…Is this…?"

Kai's voice lowered.

"…The bond."

The Harbinger roared.

"…STOP—!"

It attacked again—

Faster.

Stronger.

But this time—

They reacted together.

Instinctively.

Kai's shadows blocked.

Adrian's struck.

Perfect timing.

Perfect flow.

The creature was pushed back.

For the first time—

It faltered.

Riven's voice crackled through the comms.

"…What are you two doing?"

Adrian smirked faintly.

"…Winning."

---

The Shift

The bond pulsed again.

Stronger.

Adrian felt it.

Not just power—

But connection.

Kai's movements.

His intent.

His timing.

Everything—

Clear.

"…I can see what you're going to do," Adrian said.

Kai didn't seem surprised.

"Then follow."

Adrian nodded.

The Harbinger lunged again—

But this time—

They were faster.

Kai moved left.

Adrian moved right.

Their shadows intertwined—

Forming something new.

A single strike.

Stronger than either of them alone.

They attacked.

Together.

The impact hit.

Direct.

The Harbinger let out a distorted cry as its form cracked.

"…Impossible…"

Adrian's heart pounded.

"…Again!"

Kai didn't hesitate.

They moved again—

Perfect sync.

Another strike.

The creature staggered.

Breaking.

"…No…!"

The mark pulsed.

Hard.

The voice screamed.

"…TAKE MORE—!"

Adrian's vision flickered.

The power surged.

Tempting.

Close.

"…You can finish it…!"

Adrian's hand trembled.

Just for a moment.

Kai noticed.

"…Adrian."

Adrian clenched his fist.

"…I've got it."

The shadows steadied.

He exhaled.

"I don't need more."

Kai nodded once.

"Then finish it."

---

The Final Strike

The Harbinger roared.

Its form expanded wildly.

Desperate.

Unstable.

"…YOU WILL FALL—!"

Kai stepped forward.

Adrian beside him.

Their shadows rose—

Not chaotic.

Not wild.

But controlled.

Unified.

"…Now," Kai said.

Adrian nodded.

"Now."

They struck.

Together.

The shadows converged—

Forming a single, devastating blow.

The impact shattered the Harbinger's form completely.

It let out one final, distorted scream—

Then—

Silence.

The darkness collapsed.

Gone.

---

Aftermath

The room stilled.

The pressure lifted.

Adrian stood there, breathing hard.

"…We did it."

Kai stepped beside him.

"…Yes."

Adrian looked at his hand.

The shadows faded slowly.

Calm.

Obedient.

"…That felt different."

Kai nodded.

"It was."

Adrian glanced at him.

"…The bond?"

Kai met his gaze.

"…Yes."

A pause.

Then Adrian smiled faintly.

"…Guess we make a good team."

Kai didn't respond immediately.

But his expression softened.

"…We do."

From outside, Riven's voice came through again.

"…Status?"

Adrian smirked slightly.

"Target eliminated."

A pause.

Then—

"…Not bad," Riven replied.

Adrian let out a breath.

"…Not bad at all."

But as the silence settled—

The mark on his wrist pulsed again.

Faint.

Quiet.

Patient.

Not gone.

Just waiting.

And deep within—

The voice whispered one last time.

"…Next time… you won't refuse…"

Adrian's smile faded slightly.

Because he knew

This wasn't over.

Not even close.
