Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: The one who watches

The tension didn't fade.

Not after the fight.

Not after the whispers died down.

If anything—

It settled deeper.

Adrian could feel it as he walked through the Domain corridors later that day. The looks were still there. Less obvious now, but sharper.

More cautious.

More calculated.

"…They're not letting it go," Adrian muttered.

Kai walked beside him, silent as usual.

"They won't," he said.

Adrian glanced at him.

"…You're not helping."

Kai didn't react.

"You proved control," he continued. "Not trust."

Adrian sighed.

"…Great. So what now? I take a test every day?"

Kai's voice remained calm.

"If that's what it takes."

Adrian let out a breath.

"…This place is exhausting."

---

The Watcher Returns

He felt it before he saw him.

That same presence.

Sharp.

Focused.

Watching.

Adrian stopped walking.

"…He's here."

Kai's eyes shifted slightly.

"I know."

A figure stepped out from the shadows ahead.

The same hunter.

Calm.

Composed.

Unbothered.

Like the earlier fight hadn't mattered at all.

"…You again," Adrian said.

The hunter tilted his head slightly.

"You expected someone else?"

Adrian crossed his arms.

"I was hoping for no one."

The hunter ignored that.

"…You held back."

Adrian frowned.

"…Excuse me?"

Kai's voice dropped instantly.

"That's enough."

But the hunter continued, his gaze locked on Adrian.

"You didn't use everything."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"…And?"

The hunter took a step closer.

"…Why?"

Silence.

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Because the truth—

Was complicated.

Kai stepped forward slightly.

"He controlled the fight. That was the point."

The hunter didn't look at him.

"That's not what I asked."

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"…Because I didn't need to."

The hunter's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Or because you were afraid of what would happen if you did?"

That hit.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"…Watch your words."

The hunter didn't back down.

"You're afraid of your own power."

Kai stepped between them.

"Enough."

But Adrian spoke.

"…Maybe I am."

Silence.

The hunter blinked slightly.

Not expecting that.

Adrian continued.

"But that doesn't make me weak."

A pause.

"It makes me careful."

The hunter studied him.

Long.

Quiet.

Then—

"…Good answer."

Adrian frowned.

"…That's it?"

The hunter stepped back slightly.

"For now."

Kai's eyes narrowed.

"You're testing him."

The hunter finally looked at Kai.

"…I'm observing."

Kai's voice hardened.

"You're pushing."

The hunter didn't deny it.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Because if he breaks… I want to see it before it matters."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Adrian stepped forward.

"…You think I'm going to break."

The hunter met his gaze.

"I think everyone does."

Adrian didn't flinch.

"…Then keep watching."

A faint smile touched the hunter's lips.

"I will."

---

A Name Finally Given

Adrian turned to leave.

But stopped.

"…Wait."

The hunter paused.

Adrian glanced back.

"…You have a name, right?"

A beat of silence.

Then—

"…Veyr."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"…Alright, Veyr."

A pause.

"Try not to be so annoying next time."

Veyr's expression didn't change.

"…No promises."

Kai didn't relax until Veyr disappeared back into the shadows.

Then—

"…Stay away from him."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"…You don't like him."

Kai's voice was flat.

"He's dangerous."

Adrian smirked slightly.

"…Says the guy training me."

Kai didn't respond.

But his silence said enough.

---

Riven's Orders

Before Adrian could say anything else—

A voice echoed through the corridor.

"Meeting. Now."

Riven.

Of course.

Adrian sighed.

"…No rest."

Kai turned.

"Let's go."

---

Briefing Room

The room filled quickly.

Hunters gathered.

Tension still present.

But now—

Focused.

Riven stood at the front again.

Map glowing.

More points this time.

More activity.

"…We have a problem," he said.

Adrian crossed his arms.

"…When don't we?"

Riven ignored that.

"The Harbingers from yesterday weren't acting independently."

A pause.

"They were being directed."

The room went still.

Kai's gaze sharpened.

"…By what?"

Riven's expression darkened.

"…Something higher."

Adrian felt it immediately.

A chill.

"…Higher than what we fought?"

Riven nodded.

"Yes."

The glowing map shifted.

A new point appeared.

Larger.

Darker.

Pulsing.

Adrian's chest tightened.

The mark reacted instantly.

Burning.

"…I don't like that," Adrian muttered.

Riven looked at him.

"You shouldn't."

A pause.

"Because this time…"

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"…It's not just watching you."

The room fell silent.

Adrian's breath slowed.

"…Then what is it doing?"

Riven's voice dropped.

"…It's calling you."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Adrian looked down at his wrist.

The mark pulsed again.

Stronger.

More deliberate.

Like something had just—

Answered.

---

The Shift

Kai stepped closer to him.

"…Adrian."

Adrian didn't look up.

"…I feel it."

His voice was quieter now.

More serious.

"…It's different this time."

The faint whisper returned.

Not distant.

Not faint.

But close.

Clear.

"…Come find me…"

Adrian's fingers curled slowly.

"…Yeah…"

A small, uneasy smile formed.

"…That's definitely new."

But deep down—

He knew.

This wasn't just another fight.

This was something bigger.

Something waiting.

And for the first time—

It wasn't coming to him.

It was asking him—

To come to it.
