Chapter 99 - Chapter 97: The Sleeping Travelers

Silence settled over the valley after Adrian repeated the message.

"The bridges aren't enough."

"The travelers have to awaken too."

The words echoed in everyone's mind.

Orion slowly rested both hands on his crystal staff.

"I have not heard those words in thousands of years."

Adrian looked at him.

"You've heard them before?"

Orion nodded.

"As a child."

His sapphire eyes drifted toward the fading crimson horizon.

"It was part of an old teaching."

Mira frowned.

"I thought those teachings were destroyed."

"So did I."

Caelis remained unusually quiet.

That alone was enough to make Adrian uneasy.

Finally, Adrian turned to him.

"You know something."

Caelis looked at the ground.

"I know what the Endless chose to forget."

The valley grew still.

Elyan crossed his arms.

"Then tell us."

Caelis closed his eyes.

"My people were not always called the Endless."

"They were called the Travelers."

Adrian blinked.

"The Travelers?"

Caelis nodded.

"We crossed bridges."

"We learned."

"We shared knowledge."

His voice became distant, as though he were remembering someone else's life.

"We believed every world had something worth protecting."

Mira whispered,

"What changed?"

Caelis looked toward the black tide.

"Fear."

No one interrupted.

"When the worlds began to disappear, we stopped believing in one another."

His golden eyes dimmed.

"We believed survival required unity."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"That doesn't sound wrong."

"It wasn't."

Caelis sighed.

"The mistake was how we defined unity."

Silence.

"We decided there should be only one future."

The words landed heavily.

Adrian immediately understood.

"No choices."

Caelis nodded.

"No conflict."

"No disagreement."

"No change."

A pause.

"We became the Endless."

The valley fell silent.

The crystal leaves overhead no longer sang.

Even the wind seemed to hesitate.

Orion spoke softly.

"The Travelers died long before their world did."

Caelis did not argue.

"Yes."

Adrian looked at the black tide stretching across the horizon.

"So all those eyes..."

"They are my people."

Caelis answered.

"They surrendered their individuality."

"They became one endless will."

Mira lowered her head.

"That's heartbreaking."

Caelis smiled sadly.

"They believed it was mercy."

Adrian rubbed the mark on his wrist.

"So the message..."

He looked toward the crimson horizon.

"...wasn't talking about bridges."

"No."

Elyan's expression brightened with realization.

"It was talking about people."

The mark pulsed warmly.

Almost approvingly.

Orion's eyes widened.

"The Travelers."

He looked at Adrian.

"They aren't gone."

Adrian frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"The role."

Orion tapped his staff gently against the ground.

"The Bridgekeepers protect the roads."

A pause.

"But Travelers..."

His smile returned.

"...are the ones who walk them."

The truth settled over the valley.

The bridges had been restored.

But no one remained to use them.

Centuries of fear had isolated every surviving world.

The roads existed.

The travelers had forgotten how to travel.

A low hum spread through the valley.

The ancient monuments glowed brighter.

New words appeared beside the old inscriptions.

Mira quickly read them aloud.

"When the roads awaken, call not the kings..."

She swallowed.

"Call the willing."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"That sounds more hopeful."

Before anyone could answer, the bridge pulsed again.

This time, a map of light appeared above the valley.

Three brilliant worlds floated within it.

Earth.

Elyan's homeland.

The Endless realm.

Then...

Tiny lights began appearing inside each world.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Millions.

Each one shimmered differently.

"What are those?" Adrian asked.

The bridge answered.

Not with words.

With understanding.

The lights were people.

Every living soul connected to the bridge.

Every person capable of choosing.

Every potential Traveler.

Orion stared in amazement.

"The bridge is searching."

"For what?" Adrian asked.

"For hearts willing to cross."

Silence followed.

Then Kai's face suddenly appeared among the countless lights.

Adrian laughed.

"Of course."

Mira looked confused.

"You know one of them?"

"My best friend."

Adrian smiled.

"He'd probably step through a bridge just to see what happens."

Far away...

On Earth...

Kai stood in the ruined Sanctuary, staring at the night sky.

Without warning, the mark Adrian had once touched on his shoulder glowed faintly.

He frowned.

"...That's new."

Veyr noticed immediately.

"You feel it too."

Kai nodded.

"It feels like..."

He struggled to explain.

"...someone's inviting me somewhere."

Back in the valley, Adrian watched Kai's light shine brighter than the others.

Then another appeared.

Veyr.

Then Lyra.

Then countless strangers across every surviving world.

The bridge wasn't choosing heroes.

It wasn't choosing rulers.

It was choosing people willing to reach beyond fear.

Caelis watched the map quietly.

"So it begins again."

Elyan smiled.

"The age of Travelers."

Orion looked toward Adrian.

"The Keepers cannot save the worlds alone."

Adrian nodded.

"I know."

He looked at the millions of lights scattered across the map.

"Bridges don't matter..."

A slow smile spread across his face.

"...unless someone is brave enough to cross them."

The valley answered with a burst of silver light.

Across three surviving worlds...

People looked toward unfamiliar stars.

Dreamed impossible dreams.

Or felt an unexplainable pull in their hearts.

None of them understood why.

Not yet.

But the bridges had awakened.

And now...

The Travelers were beginning to remember.
