Chapter 100 - Chapter 98: The First Invitations

The map of light hovered above the valley.

Millions of tiny lights shimmered across the three surviving worlds.

Some burned brightly.

Others flickered like distant candles.

Each represented a life.

A choice.

A possibility.

Adrian stood beneath the glowing map, unable to look away.

"So every light..."

He glanced at Orion.

"...is someone who can become a Traveler?"

Orion nodded.

"Not everyone who is invited accepts."

"And not everyone who accepts finishes the journey."

Mira stepped beside Adrian.

"The bridge never forces anyone."

"It only asks."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"That's a lot more polite than most ancient powers I've met."

Elyan chuckled.

"The bridge learned long ago that a path walked unwillingly leads nowhere."

The crystal valley hummed softly.

The ancient monuments surrounding them glowed brighter, their inscriptions flowing like rivers of light.

Then—

One light on the map flared brilliantly.

Everyone turned.

It came from Earth.

Adrian recognized it immediately.

"Kai."

Far away...

Kai stood in the Sanctuary courtyard.

The sky above remained unnaturally dark, with only a handful of stars still visible.

Veyr was studying the ruins when Kai suddenly froze.

"You okay?" Veyr asked.

Kai looked at his hands.

"They're glowing."

A faint silver symbol appeared on the back of his right hand.

Not identical to Adrian's mark.

Simpler.

A single circle crossed by a thin line.

Before either of them could react, a soft voice echoed in Kai's mind.

"A road has opened."

Kai blinked.

"What?"

The voice continued.

"Will you walk it?"

The glow faded as quickly as it had appeared.

Kai stared at his hand in stunned silence.

Veyr stepped closer.

"What happened?"

Kai looked up.

"I think..."

He swallowed.

"...someone just invited me somewhere."

---

Back in the crystal valley, the light representing Kai settled into a steady glow.

Adrian let out a relieved breath.

"So the bridge really is reaching people."

"It has begun," Orion said.

"But it must move carefully."

"Why?"

"Too many invitations at once would create chaos."

Caelis nodded.

"The old bridges failed because they were opened faster than trust could grow."

The words lingered in Adrian's mind.

Trust.

Everything seemed to come back to that.

The bridge wasn't rebuilding roads.

It was rebuilding trust between worlds.

Suddenly—

Another light flared.

Then another.

Then three more.

The map shimmered as invitations spread across all three worlds.

One appeared in a small village hidden among Elyan's floating islands.

Another glowed deep within the realm of the Endless.

A third awakened in a crowded city on Earth.

Mira watched carefully.

"They're answering."

Adrian frowned.

"Already?"

"The bridge knows who is ready."

Orion tapped his crystal staff gently against the ground.

"It doesn't call the strongest."

"It calls the willing."

A ripple passed through the map.

Several lights dimmed.

Others brightened.

Some disappeared completely.

"What happened?" Adrian asked.

"They refused."

Elyan answered calmly.

"The bridge accepts every answer."

No punishment.

No disappointment.

Only another chance someday.

Adrian found himself smiling.

"I like that."

"So do I."

The voice didn't belong to anyone standing nearby.

Everyone turned.

A young boy, no older than twelve, stood at the edge of the valley.

His clothes were simple, woven from pale blue fabric unlike anything Adrian had seen before.

His eyes were wide with wonder.

"I followed the light," the boy said nervously.

Mira gasped.

"You're here already?"

The boy nodded.

"It asked if I wanted to see something beautiful."

Adrian looked around in confusion.

"Who is he?"

Elyan smiled warmly.

"The first Traveler."

The boy looked embarrassed.

"I don't think I've traveled very far."

"You crossed worlds," Orion replied gently.

"I'd say that's far enough."

The boy looked at Adrian.

"Are you the Bridgekeeper?"

Adrian scratched the back of his neck.

"Apparently."

The boy grinned.

"I thought you'd be older."

Caelis let out the faintest laugh.

"So did I."

The valley relaxed.

For the first time in what felt like ages, the air wasn't heavy with fear or ancient secrets.

It was filled with curiosity.

The boy looked around in amazement.

"I've never seen trees that sing."

Mira smiled.

"They're happy you're here."

His eyes widened.

"They can be happy?"

"They've been waiting a very long time."

The boy reached out carefully, touching one of the crystal leaves.

The tree responded with a soft melody that echoed across the valley.

More trees joined in.

Soon the entire forest was singing.

Adrian looked toward Orion.

"Is this supposed to happen?"

Orion smiled.

"No."

A pause.

"It's better."

Far beyond the valley...

The crimson horizon pulsed once.

The mysterious figure watching from beyond remained unseen.

Yet a quiet voice drifted across the distance.

"They have begun."

Another voice answered from the crimson light.

"Then hope has survived."

Back in the valley, Adrian watched as more lights slowly awakened across the map.

The first invitations had been accepted.

The first Travelers were returning.

And for the first time in countless ages...

The bridges were no longer empty.

They were alive.
