Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 — The Words Too Late

The train ride back felt quiet.

Too quiet.

Kaito sat near the window, staring outside as the city slowly passed by.

The sky was already dark.

Streetlights blurred into long streaks of yellow as the train moved through the night.

In his hands were the two letters.

Hikari's letters.

He had read them so many times that he almost knew every word by heart.

But even now, the pain hadn't faded.

If anything…

It felt heavier.

Because now he knew the truth.

Hikari wasn't just far away.

She was gone.

Forever.

Kaito leaned his head gently against the window.

Memories continued flooding his mind.

The first time she spoke to him.

The afternoons in the library.

The cookies she shared with him.

The rainy day when they walked home under the same umbrella.

Even the small moment when she noticed his first smile.

All those moments felt so vivid.

So close.

And yet…

They were already part of the past.

The next day, Kaito returned to school.

Everything looked exactly the same.

Students talked in the hallways.

Teachers walked between classrooms.

The sound of laughter echoed through the building.

But something felt missing.

As Kaito entered the classroom, his eyes naturally drifted toward the front row.

Hikari's desk.

It was still empty.

The chair was neatly pushed in.

Her books were gone.

Like she had never been there at all.

Kaito walked to his seat by the window and sat down quietly.

For a moment, he simply stared at the desk.

Then he slowly placed her letters back inside his bag.

After school, Kaito didn't go straight home.

Instead, he walked up the stairs toward the rooftop.

It was a place students rarely visited.

The door creaked slightly as he pushed it open.

A gentle breeze greeted him.

The sky above was painted in soft shades of orange and pink as the sun slowly began to set.

Kaito walked toward the edge of the rooftop.

From here, he could see the entire schoolyard.

The same place where students laughed and spent their days.

The same place where he first met her.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the letters once more.

For a long time, he simply held them.

The wind moved softly around him.

Carrying the quiet sounds of the city in the distance.

Then, slowly…

Kaito spoke.

"Hikari."

It felt strange saying her name out loud.

But at the same time…

It felt right.

His voice was calm.

But his eyes were filled with emotion.

"You said you wanted to hear me say your name one more time."

The sunset light reflected softly across the rooftop.

Kaito closed his eyes for a moment.

Memories of her smile filled his mind.

Then he whispered the words he had kept inside for so long.

"I love you, Hikari."

The wind carried his voice across the empty sky.

For a moment, it almost felt like the world had gone silent.

As if the sky itself was listening.

Kaito opened his eyes again.

The sunset was slowly fading.

Night was beginning to take its place.

He folded the letters carefully and placed them back in his pocket.

A small, quiet smile appeared on his face.

It wasn't the same smile Hikari had once pointed out.

But it was close.

Because even though she was gone…

The memories she left behind would always remain.

Kaito looked at the sky one last time before turning toward the door.

Some love stories end with a confession.

Some end with a goodbye.

But his story ended with three words spoken to the empty sky.

Words meant for someone who would never hear them.

Someone who would forever remain…

The Girl He Learned to Love Too Late.
