"Draven! The exit is closing!" Aria's voice cracked through the mechanical roar. The massive iron gate they had entered through was grinding shut, powered by gears the size of houses. If they didn't make it in sixty seconds, they'd be buried in a tomb of boiling brass.
Kai looked at his hands. They were still humming from the Abyss Evolution. His Level 20 stats felt like high-voltage electricity surging through a wire meant for a household lightbulb.
"Aria! Get to the gate! Don't look back!"
"What about you?" she yelled, parrying a lunging spider-drone that tried to take her eye out.
"I'm clearing the path."
Kai didn't run. He leaned forward, his center of gravity shifting into the darkness.

The shadows erupted. Bane, the Ogre Warlord, didn't just rise; he exploded upward, his obsidian mace catching a dozen drones mid-air and grinding them into metallic dust. Skitter, the Weaver, clung to the ceiling, its shadow-silk now reinforced by the Abyss Core's energy, weaving a barrier that intercepted the drones dropping from above.
Kai moved through the chaos like a conductor. He didn't use a blade. He used his palms. Every time he touched a drone, the Void Grip didn't just crush it—it absorbed the kinetic energy of the impact.
Thump. Crunch. Shatter.
He was a whirlwind of precision. He reached Aria just as the gate was three feet from the floor.
"Slide!" Kai commanded.
Aria dived, her armor sparking against the stone as she cleared the gap. Kai followed, but a Clockwork Stalker—a larger, panther-like machine—leaped from the shadows of the gate, its brass claws inches from his spine.
Without looking back, Kai reached into his shadow and pulled out a jagged shard of the Sentinel's crushed chest plate.
"Eat this."
He slammed the scrap metal into the Stalker's open maw and triggered a localized Collapse. The machine imploded, the vacuum of its destruction pulling Kai forward through the closing gap.
He tumbled into the cool dark of the Obsidian Grotto just as the iron gate slammed shut with a bone-shaking THUD.
Silence returned, thick and heavy.
Kai lay on his back, staring at the cave ceiling. His black armor receded, melting back into his shadow. His chest heaved, his heart rate slowly dropping from the "Overclock" state.

Kai sat up, wiping a smear of oil and blood from his cheek. "Like what?"
"Like the end of the world," Aria whispered. She stepped toward him, the blue glow of the cave moss reflecting in the tears forming in her eyes. "You didn't just destroy that Sentinel. You erased it. If the Association finds out what you are..."
"They won't," Kai said, his voice dropping into that double-toned resonance again. He stood up, his height seeming more imposing than it had an hour ago. "Because you aren't going to tell them."
Aria went still. Her hand drifted toward her sword hilt out of habit, then stopped. She realized, with a chilling certainty, that she was no longer the "Bodyguard" in this relationship. She was the guest in a predator's den.
"Why?" she asked. "Why keep me alive if you're so worried about your secret?"
Kai walked past her toward the exit of the grotto, where the red light of the desert was starting to peek through.
"Because I need a partner who knows the truth," Kai said, glancing over his shoulder. His eyes flickered violet for a brief second. "And because the things coming out of the Abyss next... I can't eat them all alone."
Aria stood in the dark for a long moment, then slowly followed him into the light.
