{Whatever the cost, return to us safely}
I got into the car and we headed to work. About half an hour later, we arrived. The place looked crowded; it seemed like another long day ahead after my absence.
"Mayar, do you want to stay in the car?"
"Am I not allowed to go inside?"
"That's the general rule, but I can find a spot for you until Hakan arrives."
"Hakan? Is that the friend?"
"Yes. So, what's your decision?"
"I'm going in with you!"
"Alright then, let's go."
We reached the staff entrance. The place was bustling as usual. I doubted anyone would be free to look after Mayar for a bit, so I'd keep her with me if necessary.
I sat at my desk, Mayar beside me, watching me work.
"That's so much paperwork!"
"You're right. It's because I let it pile up over the past few days. I'll try to finish it as soon as possible."
"Is it because of us that you have so much work?"
"Don't say that. I would have been away from work anyway because I was exhausted. Regardless... would you like to help me?"
"Yes!"
"In that box, there's a pile of plain white papers that need a 'special mark'. How about you draw whatever you want on them so I can use them later?"
[It was the only idea I had to keep her busy and stop her from getting bored.]
"I'll do it! I'll help you right away!"
I brought her the papers and she started drawing, looking quite happy.
A few minutes passed, and while I was working, the silence of the room was broken by a knock at the door.
"Come in!"
"That's my line. You're learning fast," I muttered. "Enter!"
[It was one of the employees, carrying several files. If I recall correctly, her name is Noor. She joined about two months ago, but I haven't spoken to her much... looks like it's going to be a long day.]
She looked into my eyes with a smile on her face.
"Good day, Mr. Kinjin."
{Whatever the cost, return to us safely}
"Welcome back, Mr. Kinjin. It seems you've returned to work today."
"Yes, I'm back."
"Is this beautiful little girl your daughter?"
"I wish," I replied. "She's my brother's daughter. I brought her with me today because he has an emergency." [I can't tell her the truth.]
"My name is Mayar. I came to work today with Uncle Kinjin."
"What a lovely girl. My name is Noor. If you need anything, just let me know."
"Thank you!"
"So... you've become a babysitter too? You're a man of many talents," she said, starting to laugh.
"It seems so. I don't want to bother anyone with watching her as long as it's not necessary."
"I didn't know you were this kind. If you ever want me to look after her, just tell me!"
"Thanks for the offer. If I need anything, I'll let you know."
"Deal... Anyway, these are the work files from the last three days, and more will be coming soon. Also, as you know, you have two court hearings this afternoon."
[I think I'll be the last one to leave work today.]
"Thank you. I'll get back to it now."
"Alright, I'll leave you to your work. Goodbye, Mayar!"
"Bye, Noor!"
She closed the door behind her.
"She's nice!"
"Yes, it seems so. Let's finish our work."
"Yes!"
About an hour later, Hakan called. He was waiting outside.
"Mayar, let's go."
"Am I leaving now?"
"Yes, Hakan is here. If you need anything, don't hesitate to tell him."
We went out, and he was waiting by the car.
"Hey. It's been a long time since we met in person. Is this little Mayar?"
"Yes, it's her. She'll be under your care today."
"Alright, let's go. Anything new?"
"No, things stay as they are. You already know what you have to do."
"Get in, Mayar. Let's go to your sister."
"Okay... Goodbye, Uncle."
"Goodbye. Please don't bother your sister."
"No, I won't."
They drove off, and I was left alone outside.
Right... back to work.
